Short answer: Choose between the Cybertruck and R1T by the exact trim you can buy and the work you need it to do. The R1T’s published range and towing capacity vary considerably by motor and battery configuration; Tesla’s range and performance figures also differ by Cybertruck trim. Neither vehicle is the automatic winner for every buyer, and manufacturer specifications are not a substitute for a real-world towing or charging test.

Compare exact configurations, not just model names

Both pickups are sold in configurations with different published capability. The figures below are manufacturer specifications for the configurations identified on the companies’ US pages, not independent test results. Prices and live configurations can change; check the build you intend to order before deciding.

Vehicle configuration shown EPA-estimated range 0–60 mph Towing capacity Payload
Rivian R1T Dual-Motor AWD, Large battery 329 miles 4.5 seconds 7,700 lb 2,116 lb
Rivian R1T Tri-Motor AWD 371 miles 2.9 seconds 11,000 lb 1,702 lb
Rivian R1T Quad-Motor AWD 374 miles 2.6 seconds 7,700 lb 1,724 lb
Tesla Cybertruck Premium All-Wheel Drive 320 miles 4.1 seconds 11,000 lb Up to 2,500 lb; Tesla’s indexed specification does not establish applicability to every trim
Tesla Cyberbeast 325 miles 2.6 seconds 11,000 lb Up to 2,500 lb; Tesla’s indexed specification does not establish applicability to every trim

Rivian’s figures are from its R1T comparison page. Tesla’s figures are from its Cybertruck specifications; the accessible indexed specifications provide limited configuration detail, so confirm each figure against the current build page.

Which truck has the range and acceleration you want?

Range

The displayed R1T configurations span 329 to 374 EPA-estimated miles, while the displayed Cybertruck configurations list 320 to 325 miles. The R1T’s 374-mile figure belongs to the Quad-Motor AWD shown on Rivian’s page; it does not describe every R1T. Treat the figures as trim-specific estimates, not guarantees of distance under your driving, weather, cargo, or towing conditions.

Acceleration

The displayed R1T figures run from 4.5 seconds for Dual-Motor AWD to 2.6 seconds for Quad-Motor AWD. Tesla lists 4.1 seconds for Premium AWD and 2.6 seconds for Cyberbeast. These manufacturer 0–60 mph claims distinguish configurations, but acceleration alone does not settle which pickup best suits a work or travel use case.

How much towing and payload do you need?

The R1T figures make trim selection especially important: Rivian lists 7,700 lb of towing for Dual-Motor AWD and Quad-Motor AWD, but 11,000 lb for Tri-Motor AWD. Listed payloads are 2,116 lb, 1,702 lb, and 1,724 lb respectively. Tesla lists 11,000 lb of towing for the displayed Cybertruck configurations and describes payload of up to 2,500 lb; confirm that maximum for the exact truck you configure.

Match the specific vehicle’s rating to the loaded trailer and the people and cargo the truck will carry. A maximum tow rating does not tell you how far a truck will travel while towing: the manufacturer sources cited here do not provide a comparable controlled towing-range test.

What do the charging specifications tell you?

Tesla’s indexed specifications state a maximum Supercharging rate of 325 kW. Tesla also claims the displayed Premium AWD can add up to 137 miles and the Cyberbeast up to 135 miles in 15 minutes. These are manufacturer claims, not a controlled comparison with Rivian.

Rivian lists a NACS charging port as included across the displayed R1T configurations, but its comparison page does not provide a comparable charging-time figure. That evidence is not enough to declare a charging-speed winner from peak power alone. For either truck, consider how you will charge at home and plan road trips around the charging access available on your routes. Rivian’s page also lists a Wall Charger and portable charger among its gear options; check current availability and suitability for your setup.

How do the bed and overall dimensions compare?

Rivian lists the displayed Dual-Motor R1T at 200.8 inches long and the displayed Tri- and Quad-Motor versions at 217.1 inches. For those Tri- and Quad-Motor configurations, the bed is listed as 54.2 by 51.1 by 18.3 inches, extending to 83.9 inches of bed length with the gate down.

Tesla lists the Cybertruck at 223.7 inches overall and cites 120.7 cubic feet of cargo volume. That cargo-volume figure is not directly comparable with Rivian’s bed measurements: one is a volume claim and the other gives bed dimensions. Check the actual cargo spaces and fit against what you intend to carry rather than treating the numbers as equivalent.

What equipment is included, and what does each cost?

Rivian’s US page displays starting prices of $79,990 for R1T Premium and $100,990 for R1T Performance. Those are displayed starting prices, not a like-for-like comparison with a Cybertruck; configured price depends on the selected vehicle and can change. Tesla’s official material available here does not establish a comparable current Cybertruck starting price, so use Tesla’s live configurator for the build you are considering.

Rivian lists items such as all-terrain wheels, a spare tire, reinforced underbody shield, powered tonneau cover on some configurations, cargo crossbars, an off-road recovery kit, and all-weather floor mats. The listing alone does not establish that every item is standard or available on every trim. Confirm inclusion, option status, and current availability in the chosen configuration before comparing equipment or total cost.

What warranty information is available?

Tesla’s indexed search material states basic vehicle coverage of four years or 50,000 miles and battery and drive unit coverage of eight years or 150,000 miles. Because the official page’s visible detail is limited, confirm the current terms and any configuration-specific conditions on Tesla’s live warranty information before purchase. The cited Rivian comparison material does not supply warranty figures for a side-by-side comparison.

Which electric pickup should you choose?

  • Consider an R1T configuration if its dimensions, bed layout, equipment, and exact trim’s range or payload suit your priorities. Do not assume the longest-range or highest-tow R1T figure applies to a different motor and battery configuration.
  • Consider a Cybertruck configuration if its published specifications and cargo needs fit your use, and the exact build’s payload, current price, charging arrangements, and warranty terms check out for you.
  • For regular towing, begin with the loaded trailer and payload you actually need to carry, then verify the exact vehicle’s rating. Do not use the advertised maximum range as a towing-range estimate.
  • Before ordering either truck, compare current configured prices, EPA range for the selected trim, equipment included in that build, and charging options for your home and routes.
