The current LinuxLinks roundup lists seven free, open-source terminal-based file-sharing tools—not eight. Its entries include tools for remote transfers and local-network sharing, but the available page does not identify an intended eighth pick. For remote transfers, croc and Magic Wormhole are documented command-line options; for a phone on the same Wi-Fi, qrcp uses a QR code. OnionShare is a separate Tor-based candidate with a command-line mode, not a confirmed missing entry.
Why the title says eight but the roundup lists seven
The LinuxLinks page titled “7 Best Free and Open Source Terminal-Based File Sharing Tools” names croc, Magic Wormhole, qrcp, FTS, ffsend, JocalSend, and e2ecp. Its eligibility criterion is that software be free and open source, but the page does not establish a comparative test method. The available evidence does not explain why the canonical title says eight, so there is no basis to invent an eighth selection or present these entries as a tested ranking. See the roundup’s current list.
Choose by where the transfer needs to go
| Tool | Best fit | Recipient workflow | Network and transfer notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| croc | One-off transfers between computers, including different platforms | Enter a generated code phrase | Attempts peer-to-peer transfer and can fall back to a relay; documents end-to-end encryption, multiple files, and interrupted-transfer resumption. |
| Magic Wormhole | Sending files, directories, or short text between computers | Use a short, single-use code shared by the sender | Attempts a direct connection and uses a transit relay if that fails; documents encrypted transfer data. |
| qrcp | Moving files between a computer and a phone on reachable Wi-Fi | Scan a QR code with a mobile browser | Serves a local URL through the computer’s Wi-Fi interface; can receive uploads and bundle multiple files into a zip archive. |
| FTS | Transfers and communication on a local network | Use its CLI or TUI | Lists LAN chat, contacts, online users, transfer progress and history, and encrypted transfers. Its profile warns against use on public networks without permission. |
These are workflow distinctions, not performance results: the cited material provides no comparative speed figures. A relay fallback also does not mean every transfer travels through a relay; croc and Magic Wormhole both describe trying a direct connection first. Check each project’s current documentation for supported installation methods and requirements, which can change.

Remote transfers between computers
croc: code phrase, direct connection, or relay fallback
croc is designed to transfer files and folders between computers. The sender shares a generated code phrase, which the project says establishes PAKE and derives a shared secret for end-to-end encryption. The tool attempts peer-to-peer transfer and falls back to a relay when needed; the project also documents self-hosting a relay. Its README describes cross-platform support for Windows, Linux, and macOS, browser compatibility, multiple-file transfers, resumption after interruption, proxy use, and IPv6-first behavior with IPv4 fallback. It does not require the user to run a local server or configure port forwarding. These are project-documented capabilities, not independent security or performance test results. Follow the official README and release instructions for current installation steps.

Magic Wormhole: a short-lived code for files, directories, or text
Magic Wormhole’s wormhole command-line tool transfers arbitrary-sized files and directories, as well as short text. The sender and recipient use a generated, human-pronounceable single-use code. The project documentation says it tries a direct connection and falls back to a transit relay if direct connectivity fails. It describes the file-transfer data as an encrypted record-pipe, with a key derived from the PAKE phase and libsodium secretbox. This describes the project’s stated protocol, not an independent security audit. The project summarizes its aim as “Get things from one computer to another, safely.” Consult the official documentation for current installation options; availability varies by distribution and platform.
Sharing with a phone on the same Wi-Fi
qrcp: browser download or upload through a QR code
qrcp takes a different approach from remote rendezvous tools. It starts a web server bound to the computer’s Wi-Fi interface and displays a QR code containing a local URL. A phone that can reach that URL can scan the code in its browser to download a file. The profile also describes receiving uploads and sending multiple files as a zip archive. HTTPS is supported when a TLS certificate and key are configured. This is most suitable when both devices can access the same local network; it is not evidence that the QR code makes a transfer available over the internet. The profile identifies Linux, macOS, and Windows support and an MIT license. Check the project repository for current setup and security details.

Local-network tool with a specific safety boundary
FTS: transfers plus LAN communication
FTS is described as a lightweight CLI and TUI for local-network transfers and communication. Its listed functions include chat, contacts and online-user views, transfer progress, history, and encrypted transfers. The profile explicitly says it is designed for local networks and should not be used on public networks without permission. Do not treat “encrypted transfers” as a reason to disregard that restriction. The profile identifies the project as MIT-licensed and developed by Terabase-Studios. See the project page for current information.
Three more names in the seven-entry list
The roundup includes three additional entries, but its available descriptions support only brief identifications, not a feature-by-feature recommendation:

- JocalSend: described as a TUI LocalSend implementation.
- e2ecp: described as a cross-platform tool.
Those labels alone do not establish their current platform support, transfer model, encryption details, or limitations. Verify each project’s current official documentation before choosing one for a specific security or network requirement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is OnionShare the missing eighth tool?
There is no evidence that OnionShare was intended to fill the gap in the roundup. It is nevertheless a relevant separate option for readers interested in Tor-based sharing: its documentation describes an open-source tool for sharing files, hosting websites, and chatting using Tor, and includes command-line-only installation and CLI documentation. That makes it a plausible candidate in the broader category, not a confirmed eighth entry. See the OnionShare documentation for its own scope and current instructions.

How to make the choice
- For a computer-to-computer transfer over the internet: consider croc or Magic Wormhole if a shared code and the documented direct-connection/relay workflow suit both parties.
- For a computer-to-phone transfer on Wi-Fi: consider qrcp when a browser-based QR workflow and local network reachability are appropriate.
- For a LAN environment with chat and transfer history: consider FTS only within its stated local-network boundary and with the required permission.
- For Tor-based sharing: assess OnionShare separately rather than treating it as the roundup’s missing pick.
- For ffsend, JocalSend, or e2ecp: do not infer security properties or compatibility from their short roundup labels; confirm the details in current project documentation.
