There is not enough evidence here to name a universal performance winner. Google’s Tensor G3 and Apple’s A15 Bionic power different phones, and the available Geekbench results are user-submitted device-level aggregates—not a controlled, same-version test of the chips. The clearest documented contrast is that Apple publishes core counts for A15 in iPhone 13, while Google describes Tensor G3’s subsystems and AI-oriented capabilities without a comparable full specification table.
Which phones are being compared?
Tensor G3 is the system-on-chip (SoC) in Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. The A15 Bionic specifications discussed here are for the base iPhone 13, introduced in 2021. These are phone-and-platform comparisons as much as chip comparisons: the benchmark results available for each are associated with complete devices, not isolated processors.
Tensor G3 and A15 Bionic specifications
| Specification | Google Tensor G3 | Apple A15 Bionic in iPhone 13 |
|---|---|---|
| Phone context | Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro | Apple iPhone 13 |
| CPU | Google describes the chip as using the latest generation of ARM CPUs; core count and clock speeds are not specified in the cited announcement. | 6 cores: 2 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores. |
| GPU | Google describes an upgraded GPU; core count is not specified in the cited announcement. | 4 cores in the base iPhone 13 configuration. |
| AI and imaging hardware | Google describes a next-generation TPU, ISP and imaging DSP. | 16-core Neural Engine. |
| Manufacturer-stated emphasis | On-device AI, speech, photography and imaging, alongside CPU and GPU updates. | Apple’s cited iPhone 13 specification lists the chip configuration but does not provide a comparable statement of design emphasis. |
| Comparable published benchmark score in the cited manufacturer specifications | Not stated. | Not stated. |
Google’s Tensor G3 announcement identifies its components and features, but does not provide a conventional full specification table with CPU core counts, frequencies, GPU core count or directly comparable benchmark results. Those details should not be filled in with estimates and presented as official specifications. Apple’s core configuration applies to the base iPhone 13; it should not automatically be extended to every device containing an A15 variant.
What Google says Tensor G3 is designed to do
Google presents Tensor G3 as a system-wide update, describing its CPU and GPU alongside an ISP, imaging DSP and TPU custom-designed to run Google’s AI models. The announcement associates the chip with speech recognition and text-to-speech, computational photography, Live HDR, Best Take, Audio Magic Eraser and on-device generative AI. These are Google’s descriptions of device capabilities, not independent tests showing how Tensor G3 performs against A15.

- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
In its October 4, 2023 announcement, Google said that, compared with first-generation Tensor in Pixel 6, its latest phones run “more than twice as many machine learning models on-device.” That is Google’s own comparison with Tensor in Pixel 6—not a comparison with A15 Bionic. Google also said on-device generative AI was “150 times more complex than the most complex model on Pixel 7 just a year ago.” This is likewise a manufacturer claim with its own comparison framing, not a standardized chip benchmark.
What the benchmark evidence can—and cannot—show
Geekbench publishes user-submitted results for Pixel 8 and iPhone 13. Its iOS chart says included device entries need at least five unique results, and that higher scores are better. The Pixel 8 page describes results gathered from Geekbench Browser submissions. These charts can show results reported by users for those device populations, but they do not establish a controlled head-to-head test of Tensor G3 and A15.

- Google Pixel 10a is a durable, everyday phone with more[1]; snap brilliant photography on a simple, powerful camera, get 30+ hours out of a full charge[2], and do more with helpful AI like Gemini[3]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]
- The Actua display with 3,000-nit peak brightness shows up clear as day, even in direct sunlight[5]
- Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]
A meaningful score comparison needs the same Geekbench version and clearly identified phones, along with the score type and test conditions. The available chart pages do not establish matched software versions, equivalent thermal states or a test isolating either chip. A Pixel 8 score from one benchmark generation should not be combined with an iPhone 13 score from another and labeled a direct comparison. Because no matched, same-version result is established here, no specific score advantage or universal winner follows from these sources.

How to use the comparison when choosing a phone
Use the specifications to understand what each manufacturer documents, and treat benchmark charts as context rather than a prediction of every user’s experience. A score from a complete phone does not by itself establish everyday responsiveness, battery life or sustained performance. Those outcomes involve the handset and its software as well as the processor; the cited device-level aggregates do not isolate the chip under controlled conditions.
- If core counts are your priority, Apple specifies the CPU and GPU configuration for A15 in the base iPhone 13. Google’s cited announcement does not give matching Tensor G3 counts.
- If on-device AI and imaging are your priority, Google explicitly describes Tensor G3’s TPU, ISP, imaging DSP and Pixel capabilities. Its statements describe intended capabilities and manufacturer claims, not an independent comparison with A15.
- If you are comparing benchmark numbers, check that the phone models and benchmark versions match, and distinguish an aggregate from an individual result or a controlled comparison.
- If you are deciding between Pixel 8 and iPhone 13, compare the complete phones and their respective software platforms rather than treating one processor label or score as a verdict.
What is established about each chip
The evidence supports a specific, limited conclusion: Tensor G3 is Google’s Pixel 8-generation SoC, publicly positioned around AI and imaging alongside CPU and GPU updates; A15 Bionic in the base iPhone 13 has a published six-core CPU, four-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine. The available public Geekbench charts provide device-level user submissions, not a matched controlled test that settles which chip is faster overall.
