Build Now Foundation and paediatric therapy provider Healthy Strides are planning 10 custom outdoor play spaces for Western Australian children with significant movement and coordination difficulties. The proposed options are elevated garden beds and sandpits, measured to suit each child’s seated or supported standing height. A public build is scheduled for October 18, 2026, outside RAC Arena during the Telethon Family Festival; the available reporting does not confirm that the build has since taken place.
What the Telethon project involves
The initiative is a set of 10 individually fitted play stations, not a standard playground installation. The West Australian reports that the timber beds can be used for planting or as sandpits, with each one built for a particular child.
Build Now Foundation managing director Stephen Mansfield said the team measured each child in their wheelchair or support equipment to identify a suitable working height. He described the beds as places where children can “wheel right in to touch, feel, and explore at a height where they’re fully supported.”
Why height and approach matter
Many outdoor activities happen close to the ground. A child using a wheelchair may not be able to reach a low planting area, while a child who uses a walker may find soft sand difficult to cross. A standing frame or other support equipment can also affect the height at which a child can comfortably participate.

Families quoted by The West Australian described these barriers in everyday play. Caity Rawlings, mother of Alecia, said activities can become exclusionary when a child cannot reach them from a wheelchair or when the activity cannot be adjusted. Luca’s mother described soft sand as difficult to navigate with a walker. These are family experiences, rather than measured outcomes from the project.
How custom fitting can support shared play
A play surface set at a child’s usable height can make it easier to reach materials without leaving their wheelchair or support equipment. The project’s stated aim is to help children take part in ordinary outdoor activities alongside family and friends, whether they are planting or exploring sand.

The right fit is individual. When considering a garden or play station for a child, useful questions include whether their wheelchair, walker or standing frame can approach the surface; whether they can reach into it while maintaining a supported posture; and whether the edges and legs leave room for safe positioning. The Telethon report does not publish dimensions or technical standards for the planned beds.
When and where the public build is scheduled
The West Australian reports that the live build is scheduled for October 18, 2026, outside RAC Arena during the Telethon Family Festival. The report gives no start time. It also does not establish whether the event has taken place or whether all 10 play spaces were completed and delivered.

Build Now Foundation’s related accessible projects
Build Now Foundation’s Palmer’s Garden project describes a garden designed for access from a wheelchair or walking frame and notes that the profiled child receives physiotherapy through Healthy Strides. That project provides context for Build Now’s accessible-home work, but it does not establish that the Telethon beds use the same design or specify a referral service from Healthy Strides. The foundation also describes ways to support, volunteer with or donate to its work.

The report does not state the beds’ exact dimensions, materials beyond timber, project cost, supplier, or post-event completion and delivery status. It also does not provide an evaluation of health or developmental outcomes. An off-the-shelf raised garden bed should not be assumed to be wheelchair-accessible: a suitable height, approach space and reach depend on the child and their equipment.
