What a Telegram OG image generator actually does
This is a web rendering and metadata workflow, not a Telegram hardware product. Your site publishes metadata in the document head. Telegram reads that metadata, fetches the referenced image, and builds a preview containing information such as the original URL, display URL, site name, title, description, author, preview type and whether the media is large.
A generator automates the image portion. A common pattern is to keep a stable image URL for each page path and have a service render a selected HTML element or template into that image. When the page changes, the same URL can produce a new card while your page’s metadata remains consistent.
Recommended dimensions and safe layout
The documented Telegram target is 1200 × 630 pixels, a 1.91:1 landscape frame. Design at that size even if a particular chat displays a smaller rendition.

- Place the main subject, headline and logo near the center rather than against the outer edge.
- Use a short headline with strong contrast; Telegram may crop or scale the media in different preview states.
- Keep critical text away from all four edges and test on a narrow phone screen.
- Use a predictable background and a fallback color so a partially loaded asset still looks intentional.
How to build a Telegram preview image
1. Add complete metadata in the page head
Put the tags in <head>, not in the body. Replace the example values for every page.

The image endpoint must be reachable without a login, client-side interaction or a session cookie. If your generator uses a stable path pattern, derive it from the canonical page path and URL-encode any unusual characters.
2. Create the card template
Build one HTML/CSS card at a fixed 1200 × 630 aspect ratio. A template can include a title, category, author, date and brand mark. Keep dynamic text bounded: long titles should wrap to a defined number of lines or be shortened before rendering. Load fonts and images from URLs the renderer can access, and provide a fallback font.
3. Render the selected element
A service such as HCTI documents a workflow in which og:image points to a stable HCTI URL for the page path and an hcti:selector identifies the HTML element to capture. The selector should target only the card, not the site navigation or surrounding page. Verify that the generated response has the intended MIME type and dimensions.

4. Permit Telegram’s crawler
If a WAF, bot filter or robots policy is enabled, allow requests whose user agent contains TelegramBot. A blocked crawler can produce a missing title, description or image even when the page works in your browser. Permit only the routes and methods needed for metadata and image retrieval rather than disabling all security controls.
5. Test outside Telegram first
- Open the
og:imageURL in a private browser window. - Confirm it returns an image, not HTML, a login page or a redirect loop.
- Inspect the response headers and verify the image is 1200 × 630 (or an exact aspect-ratio equivalent).
- Fetch the page source and confirm the OG tags are present in the initial HTML.
- Share the page in a test chat and compare the displayed title, description and image.
Automating images for every page
For a content site, generate the image URL deterministically from the canonical path, then render the same card template with page data. This avoids creating a new database record for every revision.

Cache generated files at the image URL, but include a version component when you intentionally change the design. A versioned path is more dependable than relying on a crawler to notice that bytes changed behind an unchanged URL.
Why a Telegram preview is missing or stale
The image URL is wrong or private
Open the URL directly. Fix DNS, HTTPS, authentication, redirects and content type problems first. The response must be the image itself; returning a page that later injects an image with JavaScript is not sufficient.

Metadata is not in the head
View the raw server response, not only the browser’s live DOM. Move tags into <head> and ensure your framework emits them during server-side rendering or static generation.
The firewall blocks TelegramBot
Review WAF events and allow the crawler user agent on the page and image routes. Check rate limits, geo restrictions and authentication middleware as well as an explicit bot rule.
The image changed but Telegram still shows the old one
Telegram can retain its own cached preview after an image changes. There is no cache-purge endpoint established in the official references used for this workflow, so do not promise an instant refresh. Use a versioned image URL for a deliberate redesign, then share the URL again. For a one-off test, changing the page URL’s query or path may cause a new fetch, but treat that as a testing technique rather than a guaranteed purge.
The card is blank or text is clipped
Wait for fonts and images before capture, set explicit dimensions, and constrain long titles. A generator should wait for a selector, a delay or network idle condition as appropriate; otherwise it may capture before the card is painted.

Telegram controls that affect what users see
Telegram’s TDLib exposes controls for disabling a preview, choosing which URL is used to generate it, forcing small or large media, and placing the preview above the message text. The Bot API exposes corresponding link_preview_options on messages. These controls affect message behavior; they do not replace valid OG metadata on your website.
