Telangana collected a reported ₹44,372 crore from GST, VAT and profession tax combined in April–September 2026, up 16% from the same six months a year earlier. GST was the largest component: ₹25,049 crore, up 19%, according to the Commercial Taxes Department figures reported by The Times of India on 2 October 2026. The total covers these three tax heads, not all Telangana government revenue.
How much did Telangana collect in the first half?
The newspaper reported that receipts from GST, VAT and profession tax reached ₹44,372 crore in April–September 2026, the first half of FY 2026–27. The comparable total for April–September 2025 was ₹38,269 crore, making the reported increase ₹6,103 crore, or 16%. These are figures attributed to the Commercial Taxes Department by The Times of India; the department’s current-period release is not independently available here.

What drove the increase?
GST contributed the larger reported gain: ₹3,988 crore, compared with ₹2,116 crore from VAT. The report describes automobiles, works contracts, construction and real-estate-related activity, finance and banking, and electronics and communication as sectors supporting GST collections. It does not provide sector-level amounts or rankings, so the list indicates areas officials identified, not how much each contributed.

VAT was attributed primarily to petrol and liquor. Profession-tax receipts were reported at ₹499 crore and described as broadly unchanged; the report explicitly calls the current figures provisional.
What were September’s collections?
For September 2026 alone, the report put receipts from the same three tax heads at ₹7,303 crore, up 15% from ₹6,368 crore in September 2025. Its reported breakdown was:

Telangana’s Economic Pulse, published by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics in November 2024, provides historical GST analysis with a different stated definition: its measure includes Telangana’s share of CGST. It reported that GST revenue achieved through September was 42.2% of the FY25 budget estimate, and that Q2 FY25 GST revenue grew 8.6% year over year. Those figures describe FY25 and should not be treated as direct comparators for the reported FY27 half-year collection unless the definitions are reconciled.
Historical context in The Times of India’s 2026 report, summarizing CAG analysis, says SGST made up approximately 41–42% of Telangana’s own-tax revenue from 2019–20 through 2023–24, and that own-tax collections in 2023–24 fell ₹3,206 crore short of budget estimates. These are different measures and periods from the ₹44,372 crore three-tax-head total. The CAG’s Telangana State Accounts index provides access to state accounts; it does not itself substantiate the specific April–September 2026 figures.
