White House technology arrived in distinct ways: some devices were installed in the building, while others marked a president’s first use of a communications medium or a broadcast milestone. The sequence runs from indoor plumbing to electric lighting, radio, television and email—but “first” means something different in each case.
What counts as a White House technology first?
A technology could be new to the building without being new to the world, and a president’s first appearance on a medium is not the same as the first broadcast from the White House. The key distinctions are where the technology was used and what kind of event established the milestone.
- Installation: a new system or appliance entered the White House.
- Presidential use: a president used or appeared through a medium, potentially somewhere else.
- Broadcast: an event was transmitted from the White House or reached a particular audience, such as a nationwide television audience.
The dates below describe White House installations or specific presidential and broadcast milestones, not the invention dates of the technologies themselves. The U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Technology Firsts at the White House provides an installation-date overview.
Household technology entered the White House in stages
Early changes addressed practical needs. The first indoor water closet was installed in 1801 during Thomas Jefferson’s administration, and hot and cold running water followed in 1853 under Franklin Pierce. A telephone arrived in 1877, during Rutherford B. Hayes’s presidency.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
These milestones describe equipment at the residence. In particular, the telephone’s 1877 installation does not establish that Hayes personally made a specific historic call. The White House Historical Association’s White House Technology Timeline also records office and household additions that made daily work easier:
- A telegraph office opened in 1866.
- Staff began using typewriters in 1880.
- Electric vacuum cleaners were used on carpets in 1922.
- The first electric refrigerator arrived in 1926.
- Air conditioning was installed in the private quarters in 1933.
The milestones show that White House modernization was incremental: communication systems, cleaning equipment, food storage and climate control each entered at different times.

Electric lights arrived in 1891, but the Harrisons were cautious
Electricity was introduced to the White House in September 1891, when Benjamin Harrison was president. An Edison Company direct-current generator installed in the basement of the State, War, and Navy Building—now the Eisenhower Executive Office Building—supplied power. The Harrison household was the first to live with the new electric lighting, but Benjamin and Caroline Harrison were wary of electric shock and initially had staff operate the switches.
Gas fixtures remained in use alongside electric lights until Theodore Roosevelt’s 1902 renovation. During the Truman-era reconstruction of 1948–52, the building changed to alternating current and connected to the municipal grid. The U.S. Census Bureau’s account of White House electricity and the Department of Energy’s history of electricity at the White House describe these changes.

Radio: Coolidge’s first address and first radio inauguration
Calvin Coolidge’s December 6, 1923 address to Congress was the first presidential address to the American people by broadcast radio. The exact audience for that address is unknown, so a listener total should not be assigned to it.
A separate milestone came at Coolidge’s 1925 inauguration: it was the first inauguration broadcast by radio. The White House Historical Association estimated that more than 23 million radio listeners heard the inaugural address. That figure is an estimate for the 1925 event, not the 1923 address. The distinction is documented in the archived White House account, “This Day in History: One Huge Leap for Digital Communications at the White House”, and the Association’s technology timeline.

Television: first presidential appearance, White House broadcast and nationwide inauguration
Television milestones are easiest to understand when separated by location and reach:
- 1939—first appearance by a U.S. president on television: Franklin D. Roosevelt appeared in a pre-recorded broadcast from the New York World’s Fair. Television sets at the fair and around New York City showed the appearance; it was not a broadcast from the White House.
- 1947—first White House television broadcast: Harry S. Truman delivered a televised appeal for food conservation to support postwar Europe. The broadcast was shown in New York and Philadelphia.
- 1949—first inauguration televised nationwide: Truman’s inauguration was the first presidential inauguration carried on television across the country.
The U.S. Census Bureau explains these distinctions in “September 2023: Philo Farnsworth and the Invention of Television”; the White House Historical Association also lists the broadcast milestones in its timeline.

Press conferences moved from recorded television to live TV
Presidential press conferences added another kind of television first. On January 19, 1955, Dwight D. Eisenhower invited cameras to record a White House press conference for television. He also appeared in a recorded color television broadcast in May 1958. Neither event was live.
John F. Kennedy held the first White House press conference broadcast live on television on January 25, 1961. A recorded event could be shown later; a live broadcast let viewers watch the press conference as it happened. The Census Bureau’s television history and the Association’s timeline identify these milestones.
Email, the White House website and later communications
White House email was introduced in 1992, during George H. W. Bush’s administration; the White House Historical Association identifies Bush as the first president to use it. The first White House website went live in 1994, during Bill Clinton’s administration. Email was a presidential-use milestone; the website was an institutional one.
Earlier communications technology continued to evolve too. In 1969, Richard Nixon used a radiotelephone to speak with Apollo 11 astronauts on the Moon, another milestone noted in the Association’s Technology & Communications account. The archived White House account covers the email and website milestones in its history of White House digital communications.
Solar energy: water heating first, later systems on the grounds
Jimmy Carter had solar thermal water-heating panels installed at the White House in 1979. Solar thermal panels heat water; they should not be confused with photovoltaic panels, which generate electricity. In 2002, the National Park Service oversaw three solar energy systems on White House grounds. These are distinct projects, rather than evidence that the 1979 installation generated electricity. The Census Bureau’s electricity history and the Association’s communications and technology account discuss the solar milestones.
