First check which remote you have: a TCL Roku remote with a microphone or magnifying-glass button is a voice remote and needs wireless pairing; a simple remote without a voice button does not pair. For a voice remote, follow the TV’s on-screen setup instructions or use Settings > Remotes & devices > Add devices > Remote > Continue, then put the remote into pairing mode.

Identify whether your remote needs pairing

Remote type How to identify it What to do
Simple infrared (IR) remote No microphone or magnifying-glass voice button It does not pair. Use fresh, correctly inserted batteries, point it at the front of the TV, and keep the signal path clear.
Voice or enhanced remote Has a microphone or magnifying-glass voice button It connects wirelessly and must be paired with the Roku TV.

Roku describes pairing as the wireless connection between a voice remote and a Roku TV or player. The physical buttons and pairing procedure can vary by remote model.

Pair a voice remote with your TCL Roku TV

During initial TV setup

Turn on the TV and follow its on-screen instructions. When prompted, put the voice remote into pairing mode and wait for the TV to complete the connection.

Using a working remote or the Roku mobile app

  1. Turn on the TV and let it finish starting.
  2. On the TV or in the Roku mobile app, open Settings > Remotes & devices > Add devices > Remote > Continue.
  3. Put the voice remote into pairing mode using the applicable method below.
  4. Keep the remote near the TV and wait for the on-screen prompt and pairing to finish.

Put the voice remote into pairing mode

  • Remote with a pairing button: Find the button on the back or under the battery cover. Press and hold it until the status light flashes. Roku specifies five seconds; TCL guidance varies by remote, so use the flashing light and TV prompt as your cues.
  • Supported voice remote without a pairing button: Press and hold Back + Home until the status light flashes.

If you have no other way to control the TV, restart it first. Once the Home screen appears, put the voice remote into pairing mode and let the TV search for it.

If the remote will not pair

  1. Check the batteries. Install fresh batteries in the correct orientation. If the pairing light does not flash, depleted batteries may be the cause.
  2. Restart the TV and retry. Roku’s voice-remote guidance says to unplug the TV for at least five seconds. TCL’s general troubleshooting guidance recommends waiting at least 30 seconds before reconnecting. Use the instructions applicable to your TV and remote.
  3. Start pairing on both sides. Make sure the TV is at the pairing step and the remote is in pairing mode at the same time. Move the remote closer, and check for obstacles or possible interference.
  4. Check whether pairing applies. If the remote has no voice button and no pairing button, it may be an IR simple remote. Point it toward the front of the TV and clear anything blocking the signal instead.
  5. Try a model-dependent power reset if needed. TCL’s Canada support guidance describes unplugging the TV and holding its physical power button for about 15 seconds. This is an option for applicable models, not a required step for every TCL Roku TV.

The Roku mobile app can provide temporary TV control and, when connected, access to the Settings pairing route.

Set up TV power and volume separately

Pairing a voice remote does not necessarily configure its TV power and volume buttons. If your remote supports those controls, open Settings > Remotes & devices > Remotes > [voice remote] > Set up remote for TV control and follow the prompts. Availability and operation depend on the TV and remote.

When to replace the remote

Consider replacement if the remote is physically damaged or continues to fail after battery checks and restart attempts. Check compatibility with your exact TCL Roku TV model before choosing a replacement; the available guidance does not establish one remote as compatible with every TCL Roku TV.
