TCL NXTPAPER phones trade a conventional glossy display for a matte surface and reading-focused display modes. Against a budget OLED phone, that can mean fewer distracting reflections and a more paper-like reading experience—but you may give up some of OLED’s contrast and vividness. It is a display preference, not proven eye protection: the American Academy of Ophthalmology says screen blue light has not been shown to harm eyes.
What the comparison actually involves
“TCL NXTPAPER 5G” covers multiple models, not one standard configuration. A useful example is the TCL 50 NXTPAPER 5G: TCL lists a 6.8-inch FHD+ display with a 120 Hz refresh rate, plus Ink Paper, Color Paper and Max Ink modes. Its product page also specifies a 5,010 mAh battery and 33 W charging. TCL cautions that features and specifications may vary by country, so check the local version before comparing phones. For a budget OLED example, Samsung’s UK listing for the Galaxy A26 5G identifies its display as Super AMOLED and specifies a refresh rate up to 120 Hz. That makes it a concrete comparison for buyers whose market and configuration match the listing—not a universal statement about price or availability. Samsung UK Galaxy A26 5G specifications.

What NXTPAPER adds—and what its claims mean
TCL describes NXTPAPER as a multilayer display approach involving antiglare treatment, a diffuse reflection layer and an enhanced panel intended to reduce blue-light emission. The TCL 50’s software and display modes let readers switch among monochrome-like and color-oriented reading presentations. These are the manufacturer’s design descriptions and claimed benefits; they should not be read as independent proof of a health outcome. TCL’s NXTPAPER technology description.

A separate model illustrates why the exact device matters. TCL’s U.S. page for the 60 XE NXTPAPER 5G specifies a 6.78-inch FHD+ 120 Hz display and claims it filters 61% more blue light. That is TCL’s stated comparison; the cited product material does not establish an independent test protocol or a medical benefit. The 60 XE is not the same phone as the TCL 50 NXTPAPER 5G. What you give up compared with OLED
Contrast and image character
OLED’s ability to render deep blacks and punchy contrast is a central reason to choose it for video, photos and high-impact imagery. In its review of the TCL 60 XE NXTPAPER, Android Central said the LCD did not match OLED contrast. That is a reviewer’s observation about one model, not a controlled measurement that ranks every NXTPAPER screen against every budget OLED panel. Android Central’s TCL 60 XE NXTPAPER review.

Reflections are not the same as outdoor brightness
A matte finish can reduce the impression of reflections, but it cannot by itself guarantee that a display will look bright enough in strong sunlight. Android Central’s reviewer reported difficulty seeing the 60 XE NXTPAPER in direct sun. Treat that as an observation about the reviewed device, not a universal result for all NXTPAPER models. The available evidence does not provide a matched instrument comparison of brightness or glare against the Galaxy A26.
Refresh rate may not decide this matchup
The TCL 50 NXTPAPER 5G and Samsung Galaxy A26 5G examples both specify 120 Hz, although Samsung describes its figure as “up to” 120 Hz. Refresh rate alone therefore does not establish a winner between these two listings; neither does it tell you whether you will prefer the matte or glossy surface.

Does NXTPAPER protect your eyes better?
No medical conclusion follows from the display design or blue-light-filtering claims. The American Academy of Ophthalmology says “the small amount of blue light coming from computer screens has never been shown to harm your eyes.” Its guidance for digital eye strain focuses on practical adjustments such as brightness, contrast and nearby lighting, rather than buying a screen on the assumption that blue-light filtering prevents damage. American Academy of Ophthalmology: Digital Devices and Your Eyes.
That does not mean display comfort is imaginary: glare, brightness, text presentation and personal preference can affect how comfortable a screen feels. It means TCL’s statements about reduced blue light and visual comfort should remain manufacturer claims, not be turned into promises to prevent eye disease or cure eye strain.

Who should choose each kind of phone?
- Consider NXTPAPER if you read for long stretches on your phone, value a matte surface, want dedicated reading modes, or find glossy reflections distracting. Try the particular model in the lighting where you use it if possible.
- Consider a budget OLED if deep contrast, vivid-looking images and video are higher priorities than a paper-like finish, or if you prefer a conventional glossy display.
- Compare the whole phone when the displays seem close: check local price, storage configuration, software support, battery, charging and availability for the exact models sold in your country.
TCL announced NXTPAPER technology integrated with AMOLED in March 2026. That announcement establishes a technology development, not that the TCL 50 NXTPAPER 5G or 60 XE NXTPAPER 5G uses AMOLED, nor that a particular retail model is available in your market. There is no established October 2026 street-price comparison here: current prices and stock depend on market, retailer and configuration. Check those details locally rather than assuming the NXTPAPER or OLED option is always the cheaper one.
