If Task Manager’s uptime stays high after Shut down but resets after Restart, Fast Startup is a likely cause. Fast Startup uses a hibernation-based shutdown path, so the next start may continue the reported kernel uptime. Restart once to test; if you want ordinary shutdowns to reset the counter, turn Fast Startup off in Power Options.
Why Task Manager can show a high uptime
A large uptime figure after powering on does not prove that Windows stayed awake the whole time. Windows elapsed-time measurements can include time spent in sleep or hibernation. Microsoft documents that GetTickCount and GetTickCount64 include time spent in those states; QueryUnbiasedInterruptTime, by contrast, counts only time in the working state. Windows also exposes a System Up Time performance counter. These measurements answer different questions, so Task Manager’s figure should not be treated as proof of continuous activity. Microsoft’s Windows time documentation describes the distinctions.
Fast Startup is a likely explanation when a normal shutdown does not reset the displayed uptime but Restart does. A Microsoft-hosted community answer describes Fast Startup as using a hibernation-based shutdown path that can preserve the kernel session across the next start. This is community guidance, not a formal Microsoft support article specifically diagnosing Task Manager’s counter. The detailed answer concerns Windows 11 Pro 23H2, build 22631.4602; an older community answer offers historical corroboration for Windows 8, not proof that every current Windows release behaves identically. Choose Restart from Windows, then check the uptime again after sign-in. If it resets, that supports the comparison that Restart begins a fresh session while your ordinary shutdown path did not.
-
If uptime remains unexpectedly high after Restart, Fast Startup alone does not explain what you are seeing. The sources available here do not establish a definitive diagnosis for every other configuration.

The menu sequence is described in a Microsoft-hosted community answer, rather than a formal support article for this counter. See the Windows 11 Pro community answer. Disabling Fast Startup removes its faster-start benefit; the cited source does not quantify the difference.
Keep Fast Startup and use Restart when you need a fresh start
If you prefer to leave Fast Startup on, use Restart when you deliberately want a fresh start and a reset uptime reading. A community answer also suggests running shutdown /s /t 0 as a shutdown workaround when you want to avoid Fast Startup on the next boot. Treat it as a workaround, not an official Microsoft-prescribed fix; the next boot will not receive Fast Startup’s benefit. Microsoft-hosted community answer

What systeminfo can—and cannot—tell you
Microsoft documents systeminfo as a command that displays detailed Windows and computer configuration information for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Its output includes a System Boot Time field that can be useful to inspect, but it is not an independent fix or proof that Fast Startup has been ruled out. Community reports describe boot-time and uptime outputs retaining the prior kernel session after a Fast Startup shutdown. Microsoft’s systeminfo documentation and the Windows 11 Pro community discussion cover these points.
A 2023 Microsoft Q&A question reports that Environment.TickCount, systeminfo, and WMI LastBootUpTime did not provide the desired start time with Fast Startup enabled. The reviewed page has no answer, so it establishes the question and the author’s reported results—not a better method. Read the question.
When the uptime still seems wrong
If the counter does not reset after Restart, or remains unexpected after you turn off Fast Startup, check your Windows version and Power Options and consider that system-specific behavior may be involved. The cited sources do not establish a universal alternative diagnosis. Do not assume that switching to another boot-time command will settle the issue: the available reports show that several outputs may reflect Fast Startup behavior too.
