You can connect an AI assistant to a task manager through MCP, but the server, client surface, permissions, and available actions determine what the assistant can actually do. Todoist documents a hosted MCP server for both Claude and ChatGPT; Linear, Notion, and Asana cover different kinds of work. Before connecting, check whether the integration supports reading only or also creating and updating records, and follow setup instructions for the specific Claude or ChatGPT product you use.
What MCP does in a task-management workflow
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open protocol for connecting applications to language models. A task manager’s MCP server exposes selected data and actions to a compatible AI client. After you connect and authorize it, you can ask the assistant to use the capabilities that server makes available—for example, finding a task or creating one. MCP does not guarantee that every task manager exposes the same records, actions, or permissions. Anthropic’s MCP overview explains the protocol, while Todoist’s developer documentation describes its task-manager integration.

These are not interchangeable task lists: Linear is oriented toward issues, Notion toward workspace pages and databases, and Asana toward team project work. Confirm the specific tools and actions exposed by the service before relying on an assistant workflow.

How to connect Todoist to Claude or ChatGPT
Todoist is a clearly documented general-purpose example because its official developer hub identifies a hosted MCP server for both clients. Its Streamable HTTP endpoint is https://ai.todoist.net/mcp. The API documentation describes OAuth setup and access to read, create, and update tasks and projects. Use the current vendor instructions rather than assuming an older community or locally run server has the same endpoint, authentication, or capabilities. Todoist Developers and Todoist API v1
- Choose the client surface. Decide whether you are connecting through the Claude app, Claude’s API, ChatGPT, or another compatible client. Their setup processes are not universal.
- Open Todoist’s current developer instructions. Verify the hosted endpoint and the authentication flow there. The documented endpoint is
https://ai.todoist.net/mcp. - Authorize only the access you need. Review the OAuth permissions and exposed actions before approval. If you only need to find or review tasks, avoid granting write access when the integration offers a read-only option.
- Try a low-impact request. Ask the assistant to find a task or report a project detail first. Check the result in Todoist before asking it to make a change.
ChatGPT setup depends on workspace controls
ChatGPT’s documented MCP-app route uses developer mode and workspace settings. OpenAI says full MCP support, including write actions, is rolling out in beta to Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans. Availability and administrative controls therefore depend on the workspace and its current eligibility. In the documented workflow, an admin or owner controls enabling and publishing apps. Whether ChatGPT requests confirmation for a write or modification can depend on app permissions and the action’s context. Claude setup depends on the product surface
Do not treat Claude’s API connector instructions as a universal recipe for the Claude app. Anthropic’s Messages API MCP connector lets API callers connect directly to remote MCP servers, configure tools, and provide OAuth bearer tokens. It supports remote HTTP transports—Streamable HTTP and SSE—but cannot attach local stdio servers directly through that connector. Claude app connector setup has its own settings and plan availability. Follow the instructions for the product surface you actually use: Anthropic’s MCP connector documentation or the MCP overview.
Check permissions and test safely
- Confirm the records and actions. Check which objects the server exposes and whether it can read, create, or update them.
- Use the narrowest useful access. Prefer read-only access when you do not need changes. Linear documents a read-only endpoint at

Access rules and approval requirements vary by service and workspace. Do not assume that an assistant’s confirmation prompt replaces reviewing the server’s scopes and tools.
- Start with a low-impact request and verify the result. Check returned information against the task manager, then review edits before relying on them—especially for consequential changes.
OpenAI warns that an untrusted MCP server may access or steal information shared through app use, or induce unintended tool actions. Connect only to servers you trust and understand, and review the OpenAI guide to MCP servers.
