The example titled “Talking Web Radio with ESP8266 and Sony Spresense” is, in the source shown, an ESP8266-based internet radio—not a documented ESP8266–Spresense integration. It uses the ESP8266 for Wi-Fi and browser control, sends decoded audio to an I2S output, and speaks a welcome message and local IP address. The code does not show Spresense libraries, wiring, or a role for a Spresense board, so treat Spresense as an unconfirmed part of the title rather than a required component.
What the project does
The project is an ESP8266 web radio controlled through a browser. After joining Wi-Fi, the device starts a small HTTP server. Its web page lets you view status, enter an MP3 stream URL, adjust volume, and stop playback. The code also uses ESP8266SAM to speak a welcome and the device’s local IP address, making “talking” a literal feature rather than a reference to voice control.
For playback, the source creates an ICY stream source, buffers the incoming data, starts an MP3 decoder, and routes audio through an AudioOutputI2S object. It saves the stream URL and volume with the ESP8266 EEPROM API and retries when starting or continuing playback fails. Those implementation details describe the code; they do not guarantee support for every internet radio stream.

Why the Spresense part of the title needs qualification
The title and interface label mention Sony Spresense, but the code shown is explicitly built for ESP8266: it includes the ESP8266 Wi-Fi library and connects to a wireless network through that platform. It does not show a Spresense library, explain a connection to a Spresense board, or assign Spresense any function in the audio path. On the available evidence, this is not a complete tutorial for combining the two boards.
#1 Best Overall
- Not only it is easy to program for this controller by using the CP2102-USB interface, but also unnecessary to press the flash and reset buttons before each flash operation.
- NodeMcu is an open source Lua based firmware for the ESP8266, ultra low cost wireless modules, development boards for rapid prototyping, integrated with ESP8266 chips.
- The ESP8266 has powerful on-board processing and storage capabilities, and can be integrated with sensors and other application-specific devices through its GPIOs.
- It is compatible with Arduino IDE,works great with the latest Mongoose IoT/Micropython.
- Modern Internet development tools can use the built-in API to instantly put your idea on the fast track.
Sony describes Spresense as an Arduino-compatible platform based on the CXD5602. According to Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation’s official Spresense overview, that chip has six ARM Cortex-M4F cores running at up to 156 MHz and integrated GPS. Those specifications belong to Spresense; they are not performance measurements of this ESP8266 radio code.
What you need—and what the source leaves unspecified
Directly supported by the example
- An ESP8266 development board is the directly evidenced board category: the source instructs users to compile for ESP8266.
- A Wi-Fi network and its credentials are needed for the code’s network connection.
- An audio output path compatible with the code’s I2S output object is implied by the software.
Not established by the example
- The source does not provide a complete parts list or an I2S wiring diagram.
- It does not specify whether I2S connects to a DAC, amplifier, speaker, or Spresense board.
- It does not establish that a Spresense main board or extension board is required or compatible with this particular source.
Choose an ESP8266 board only after checking that its pinout and board-package support suit the intended I2S and other connections. Do not infer a specific board model or audio module from the code alone.

Build instructions stated in the source
- In the Arduino environment, select an ESP8266 build target and set the CPU frequency to 160 MHz, as the gist’s own build comment instructs.
- Replace the Wi-Fi SSID and password placeholders in the source with the credentials for your network.
- Compile and upload the sketch to the ESP8266 using the appropriate board and port settings for your hardware.
- Connect to the device through the network and use its browser page to set a stream URL, adjust volume, check status, or stop playback.
The 160 MHz setting is the project’s stated instruction, not a verified requirement for every ESP8266 board or current Arduino board package. The source does not document a full physical assembly procedure, so it is not enough by itself to wire a finished speaker system.
How Spresense audio differs
Spresense has a separately documented audio platform. Sony says its extension board provides an SD-card slot, headphone jack, and microphone connections. Sony’s Arduino audio documentation describes playback and recording support, including 24-bit, 192 kHz WAV (LPCM) capability; the retrieved developer page does not state a publication or update year for that figure. Supported decoder or encoder examples may also require installation of the appropriate DSP codec files, as described in the Spresense Arduino developer documentation.

- Built-in Micro-USB, with flash and reset switches, easy to program
- Arduino compatible, works great with the latest Arduino IDE/Mongoose IoT/Micropython
- Data download access to the website: http://www;nodemcu;com
These are Spresense platform features, not evidence that the ESP8266 gist uses its audio subsystem. Building a separate Spresense audio project would require following Sony’s board-specific examples and hardware guidance rather than assuming the gist’s I2S output can be connected to Spresense.
Do not confuse it with other ESP8266 radio designs
ESP8266 internet radios can use different audio architectures. A separate 2019 SVET ELEKTRONIKE project describes a design with a VS1053 MP3 decoder and a 1.8-inch TFT display, along with presets and browser control. That design does not establish that this gist needs a VS1053 or TFT; its source instead identifies an I2S output object.

Practical verdict
If you want to reproduce the software shown, start with an ESP8266 and treat the audio hardware as an unresolved design choice until you have a compatible I2S device and wiring information. If your goal is specifically to use Sony Spresense, the cited project source does not provide the integration details needed to make it a Spresense build. Sony’s audio documentation is a separate starting point, not a confirmed extension of this radio example.
