“Tales as old as time” most likely points to Beauty and the Beast, but the phrase should not be taken literally: the best-known literary versions in the documented history date to the 18th century, and later films and stage works are distinct adaptations. The story’s staying power is easier to understand by looking at how each retelling reshapes its characters, social assumptions and use of magic.

How old is Beauty and the Beast?

The two key literary versions named in Music Theatre International’s account are Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve’s La Belle et la Bête, published in 1740, and Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont’s adaptation, published in 1756. MTI describes Beaumont’s version as the best-known. These dates establish a history for the written versions; they do not prove that the tale began then, nor that it is literally ancient or unchanged. The available sources do not establish a Beauty and the Beast-specific figure for the tale’s age, number of variants or worldwide prevalence. A frequently cited claim about a tale being told around 6,000 years ago concerns “The Smith and the Devil,” a different story, and cannot be used to date Beauty and the Beast. A National Geographic feature also discusses a study of 76 basic plots traced through an international folktale database; that is the plot set examined by the study, not a count of Beauty and the Beast variants. Who wrote the original Beauty and the Beast?

There is no single answer if “original” means the earliest version: MTI identifies Villeneuve’s 1740 tale and Beaumont’s 1756 adaptation as two important literary versions. Beaumont’s is described as the best-known, but it is not the same work as Villeneuve’s. Later stage and screen adaptations add further layers rather than replacing that literary history.

MTI also identifies major creative contributors to the later Disney adaptation: writer Linda Woolverton, lyricist Howard Ashman, composer Alan Menken, producer Don Hahn, and directors Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale. Naming them helps distinguish a collaborative modern adaptation from the earlier literary works.

Why are familiar fairy tales retold?

A familiar plot can offer a framework for examining ideas that change with the people telling it. Fairy-tale scholar Suzanne Magnanini describes a social-historical approach that looks for details connecting a variant to the time and place in which it was told. That approach makes a retelling more than a repeat: it invites questions about the assumptions and concerns expressed in its particular context. Shannan Treasure Palma’s 2012 Emory dissertation studies fairy-tale myth in popular culture using feminist and comparative-media analysis, including Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella and Briar Rose. Its abstract argues that fairy-tale myth can act as gendered cultural shorthand and provide a way to reconsider assumptions about identity and desirable endings. This is a lens for reading versions, not a claim that every adaptation makes the same argument. Palma’s 2012 Emory dissertation

What to compare in different versions

When comparing Villeneuve, Beaumont and later screen or stage adaptations, focus on what the version does differently rather than treating “the story” as one fixed text.

Text and medium

A literary tale, a screen adaptation and a stage work make choices within different forms and contexts. Note what is added, removed or emphasized, and avoid attributing a feature of one version to all the others.

Historical setting and social assumptions

Ask what a version suggests about family, class or gender, and what concerns its setting may help explain. Such details can connect a variant to its time and place, but one tale is not a transparent record of an entire culture.

Character perspective and agency

Track whose perspective drives the plot and whose choices change its direction. A shift in focus or agency can alter how a reader understands the relationship and the ending. This is a useful comparison question, not a settled finding that applies to every version.

The work performed by magic

Magic is not necessarily decoration: it can shape the obstacles characters face and make it possible for them to overcome those obstacles. Ask what magic causes, enables or resolves in the particular version. Magnanini’s interview discusses fairy-tale magic as part of how these stories work, rather than as spectacle alone.
