GNOME Web (Epiphany) is an active, maintained browser, but “good enough” depends on the sites and workflows you need. GNOME’s app catalog lists Web 51.1, released on September 24, 2026. The browser is built on WebKit, while the WebKitGTK engine continues to receive releases and security advisories. Those facts show current development; they do not prove universal compatibility with every web app or Chrome- and Firefox-specific feature.
What GNOME Web and Epiphany mean
Web is GNOME’s current name for its browser. GNOME says it is often referred to by its codename, Epiphany, and its help documentation describes Web as the application formerly known by that name. See the GNOME Web app page and GNOME Web introduction.
On first reference, “GNOME Web (Epiphany)” is the clearest wording: it connects the name shown in current menus and catalogs with the name used in older guides, package names and community questions.
How current is GNOME Web?
Current application entry
As checked on September 30, 2026, GNOME’s app catalog lists Web 51.1, released September 24, 2026. That is the latest catalog entry identified here, not a guarantee that every Linux distribution has already shipped it. Distribution repositories and Flatpak runtimes can lag or use different build revisions.

Check the version supplied by your own package source before judging the browser. An installation’s application version and its WebKitGTK engine version are separate details; the latter is especially important for rendering behavior and security fixes.
WebKitGTK activity
GNOME Web is based on WebKit, according to the project’s source repository. Upstream WebKitGTK lists version 2.54.0 on September 16, 2026, and a security advisory, WSA-2026-0006, dated September 29, 2026, in its release and security chronology. This is evidence of an active engine project, but the exact WebKitGTK build bundled with your distribution or Flatpak must be verified separately.

What the current engine changes mean for GNOME users
WebKitGTK 2.54’s release highlights describe several GNOME-related preference improvements:
prefers-reduced-motionfollows GNOME 50’s reduced-motion setting.- The GTK4 port implements
prefers-contrastfor the first time. - In that port,
prefers-color-schemehonors the dark-style preference.
These are upstream WebKitGTK capabilities. They should not automatically be attributed to every GNOME Web package: a distribution may ship an older engine, and the browser build may use a different GTK port or runtime.

Which installation channel should you use?
| Channel | Best for | Stability expectation |
|---|---|---|
| Stable Flathub build | Normal browsing and everyday use | GNOME’s project README recommends this route for the stable app. |
| Technology Preview | Testing upcoming work | Explicitly described by the project as an unstable preview. |
| Canary | Developers and testers following the newest code | More likely to be very unstable because it uses WebKit’s git main and Epiphany’s git master. |
The project also points developers to GNOME Builder with its Flatpak Builder manifest, Toolbox or JHBuild. Those workflows are for building or testing, not for choosing the most reliable browser on a personal system. Installation and runtime versions still determine which engine fixes and features you receive.
Is GNOME Web good enough as a main browser?
There is no evidence here for a universal yes or no. A sensible decision uses five checks:
Rank #4
- THE POWER TO STAY PRODUCTIVE – Looking to make your everyday work and home life more manageable without breaking the bank? The Lenovo V15 Gen 4 offers long-term reliability with top-of-the-line features to make you your most productive self.
- CRUSH YOUR TO-DO LIST – The AMD Ryzen CPU pairs quiet performance and enhanced operating power to crush your high-demand workday. It optimizes performance and allows for seamless multitasking.
- TRUE-TO-LIFE VISUALS – The 15.6” FHD IPS display is anti-glare with 300 nits brightness to see your best outside or in. Its 88% screen-to-body ratio makes viewing detailed applications like spreadsheets a breeze.
- SEAMLESS COLLABORATION – Lenovo Smart Appearance enhances your camera effects to protect your privacy and to make you the focus of every video conference. Intelligent noise cancelation minimizes distraction and Dolby Audio provides an elegantly sonorous experience.
- BUILT TO WITHSTAND – Built for military-grade toughness, the V15 Gen 4 is tested to withstand harsh temperatures, pressure, humidity, vibrations and more. Keep your work safe from the board room to your living room and everywhere in between.
- Essential-site compatibility: sign in to the sites you use for work, banking, school, government services and media, then exercise the actual workflows rather than only opening the home pages.
- Required capabilities: confirm that the build supports any extensions, password-manager integration, hardware authentication, video-conferencing features or account flows you require.
- Engine freshness: record both the Web application version and the WebKitGTK version supplied by your distribution or Flatpak runtime.
- Desktop fit: check whether GNOME’s dark-style, contrast and motion preferences behave as expected in your installed build.
- Stability choice: use the stable channel for primary browsing; reserve Technology Preview or Canary for testing when breakage is acceptable.
If those checks pass for your workload, GNOME Web can be a reasonable primary browser, particularly when close GNOME integration matters. If a critical site fails or you depend on a capability unavailable in your build, keep another browser available. That is a workload decision, not a judgment that the project is inactive.

Questions that require your own testing
The cited official materials do not provide a controlled current comparison of site compatibility, performance, privacy, extension coverage, market share or user satisfaction against Chrome, Firefox or other browsers. The release dates are project-maintenance evidence, not user-outcome statistics. Test named sites and functions on the specific GNOME Web and WebKitGTK build you plan to use.

A practical way to evaluate your installation
- Open Web’s About information or your distribution’s package details and note the application version.
- Identify the WebKitGTK package or Flatpak runtime version used by that installation.
- Run through a written list of critical sites: authentication, payments, uploads, downloads, video, notifications and any web applications with complex editors.
- Repeat the checks after major distribution or runtime updates, especially when a site’s behavior changes.
- Keep a second browser installed until the critical workflows have worked reliably over time.
This process avoids treating the GNOME catalog’s 51.1 entry as if it described every package. It also separates a browser-project question—whether development is active—from a compatibility question that only your sites can answer.
Bottom line
GNOME Web (Epiphany) is not an abandoned browser: Web 51.1 was released on September 24, 2026, its WebKit foundation remains active, and GNOME continues to publish stable and preview channels. It is a credible browser to try as a daily driver, but the evidence does not justify claiming universal feature or site parity. Choose the stable build, verify the versions you actually receive, and make your final decision from the web apps and accessibility preferences that matter to you.
