Tails 6.11, announced on January 9, 2025, fixed security issues, added earlier warnings for USB partition errors, and updated several apps and desktop behaviors. It is now an older release: the official Tails 6.11 announcement and official release history should not be treated as current download guidance. For a new installation or security update today, use Tails’ current official instructions.

What security problems did Tails 6.11 fix?

Tails said the vulnerabilities were identified in an external security audit by Radically Open Security and responsibly disclosed. The release announcement described a key limitation: exploiting the issues required a powerful attacker to have already taken control of an application in Tails. The listed fixes were not described as a way for an arbitrary remote attacker to directly compromise any Tails user.

The fixes addressed three kinds of potential harm:

  • Persistent malicious software: a weakness in Tails Upgrader could let an attacker install malicious software permanently.
  • Monitoring online activity: issues involving Onion Circuits, Unsafe Browser, Tor Browser, and Tor Connection could be used to monitor activity.
  • Persistent Storage settings: another issue could let an attacker change those settings.

The announcement references issues #20701, #20709, #20702, and #20710. Tails wrote, “We are not aware of these attacks being used against Tails users until now.” That is the project’s statement at the time of the January 9, 2025 announcement, not an independently verified assessment of threat activity. See the release announcement for its full account.

What changed with Tails USB partition errors?

Tails 6.11 added earlier detection and warnings for errors in the partitions on a Tails USB stick. Corrupted partitions can cause problems with Persistent Storage or upgrades. Tails listed broken or counterfeit hardware, software errors, and physically removing the USB stick while Tails is running as possible causes.

If Tails detects partitioning errors and there is no Persistent Storage, the release announcement says it recommends reinstalling Tails or using a new USB stick. If Persistent Storage is present, do not assume that reinstalling is a harmless repair: installing on a new stick instead of upgrading erases Persistent Storage on the existing stick. Follow current Tails guidance and take care to distinguish an upgrade from a fresh installation.

Which apps and desktop features were updated?

  • Tor Browser was updated to version 14.0.4.
  • Thunderbird was updated to version 128.5.0esr.
  • Electrum hardware-wallet support was removed. Tails said Trezor wallets had stopped working in Debian 12 (Bookworm), and therefore in Tails 6.0 or later.
  • GNOME Text Editor was changed so it would not reopen the last file.
  • The desktop menu for the Tor status icon gained a link to the Tor Connection assistant.
  • The team improved how it finds useful information in WhisperBack reports.

These app versions and changes describe Tails 6.11 specifically; they do not establish what is included in current Tails.

How did the Tails 6.11 upgrade options differ?

Choice When the release recommended it Persistent Storage
Automatic upgrade Available for users upgrading from Tails 6.0 or later. An upgrade is distinct from installing on a new USB stick; the warning about erasure applies to a fresh installation on a new stick.
Manual upgrade The announcement advised users who had used Tails extensively since January 9 without upgrading and wanted extra caution to choose a manual upgrade. It also recommended trying a manual upgrade if automatic upgrade was unavailable or Tails failed to start afterward. As with any upgrade path, follow the relevant official instructions; do not confuse it with installing anew.
Fresh installation on a new USB stick For installing Tails rather than upgrading an existing installation. Installing on a new stick erases Persistent Storage on the existing stick.

Those directions refer to the 6.11 release announcement, not a recommendation to install that old version now. For a current installation, Tails provided instructions for Windows, macOS, Linux, and a Debian/Ubuntu command-line method using GnuPG; use the current official installation instructions and choose the procedure for your operating system.

Is Tails 6.11 still the version to install?

No. Tails’ official release history lists later 6.x releases and the 7.x series after 6.11. Treat 6.11 as a historical release, and consult the current official Tails instructions for downloads and security guidance rather than installing 6.11 based on an old release announcement.
