Tabby is an open-source terminal emulator and SSH/serial client that can bring many PuTTY-style remote-access tasks into one desktop app. It supports SSH, Telnet, serial connections, saved profiles, forwarding, tabs and split panes on Windows, macOS and Linux. It may not replace every server tool: SFTP is listed as a plugin, and the project warns that Tabby is not lightweight.
What Tabby can replace—and what it cannot
Tabby is a cross-platform terminal application, not a new shell or a replacement for MinGW or Cygwin. Its project describes it as a configurable terminal emulator and SSH and serial client, and lists PuTTY among the applications it can replace. That is a product capability claim, not proof that every PuTTY user’s setup will migrate cleanly.
For remote work, Tabby combines connection management with terminal features that might otherwise be spread across separate apps. Its documented capabilities include SSH2, Telnet, serial sessions, and local shell sessions, alongside tabs and split panes. The project is MIT-licensed and publishes builds for Windows, macOS and Linux. Tabby’s repository and README provide the project’s platform and feature details.
How its features map to common server tasks
| Task | Tabby capability | What to note |
|---|---|---|
| Manage SSH connections | Connection manager, saved profiles, automatic jump-host management, and agent forwarding | The README specifically names Pageant and the Windows native OpenSSH Agent for agent forwarding. |
| Reach services through a remote host | SSH port forwarding and X11 forwarding | Whether the setup works for a particular host or application depends on its configuration. |
| Automate or streamline login | SSH login scripts and configurable keyboard shortcuts | Check that scripts and key handling suit your existing workflow before retiring another client. |
| Work with serial equipment | Serial terminal with saved connections, readline input, optional hex input and hexdump output, newline conversion, and automatic reconnection | These options can be useful for device consoles, but the project documentation does not establish compatibility with every adapter or device. |
| Move files | Zmodem transfer is advertised; an SFTP tab is separately listed as a plugin | Do not treat the SFTP tab as a built-in feature or assume it shares Zmodem’s workflow. Check the plugin’s current availability and fit. |
| Extend terminal workflows | Plugins include examples such as Docker connections, output saving, quick commands, and configuration sync | Plugin availability and maintenance can change; confirm any essential plugin before switching. |
Tabby also offers retained tabs, split panes, Unicode support, encrypted storage for SSH secrets and configuration, and a web app that can be self-hosted, according to the project’s features page. These features may reduce app switching, but the right combination depends on what your current toolkit actually does.
#1 Best Overall
- WIDELY APPLICATIONS: Suitable for U disk, keyboard, mouse, camera, printer, mobile phone and other devices with USB interface. Terminal blocks make it easy to test electronics equipment or power up.
- DURABLE: Nickel-plated interface, anti-friction, strong oxidation resistance, effectively reduce resistance. The signal is more stable and has a longer service life.
- EASY to USE: No soldering required. Just use a small screwdriver to open up the terminal blocks, slide in your stranded or solid-core wire, and re-tighten. Save you from solder trouble, no need to purchase expensive tool. Great time and money saver.
- FLEXBILITY: The terminal block itself is removable from the body. It's more durable than soldering wires onto a connector. Can extend the length of the USB cable, ideal for you electronic DIY projects and test the equipment that with USB interface ports.
- All the pins are clearly labeled, which is really nice because we keep forgetting the order.
Where Tabby differs from a lightweight PuTTY setup
The main trade-off the project itself calls out is resource use: Tabby is not lightweight. Its README suggests considering Conemu or Alacritty if RAM usage matters. No independent benchmark in the available material establishes how much memory Tabby uses against PuTTY on a particular machine, so test your own connection count, plugins and terminal workload rather than assuming a specific performance penalty.
Consolidation also does not automatically mean fewer dependencies. If your file workflow relies on SFTP, you will need to evaluate the separately listed SFTP-tab plugin. If you depend on a particular SSH agent, serial adapter, login script or terminal behavior, verify it before making Tabby your only client.

How to decide whether it fits your setup
- List what PuTTY and companion tools do today. Include protocols, saved sessions, jump hosts, agents, forwarding, file transfer, serial access and any automation.
- Match each task to a documented Tabby feature or plugin. Distinguish built-in support from plugin-based functions, especially for SFTP.
- Install the build for your operating system from the project’s official links. The project lists Windows, macOS and Linux; check its repository for current release and distribution options.
- Recreate a representative set of sessions. Test your normal SSH hosts, jump-host route, agent, forwarding rules, login scripts, serial devices and file-transfer method.
- Check the practical trade-off. Run the number of tabs and plugins you expect to use, and decide whether the flexibility is worth the app’s documented non-lightweight footprint.
What the evidence does—and does not—establish
Tabby’s project materials establish a broad feature set and explicitly position it as a PuTTY alternative. They do not establish that it is faster, more reliable, easier to migrate to, or a complete replacement for every administrator’s server toolkit. Those outcomes depend on the user’s machine, hosts, plugins and habits; evaluate them with your own sessions before removing a tool you still depend on.
