U.S. T-Mobile and unlocked versions of the Galaxy S9, S9+, and Note 9 began receiving Android 10-based One UI 2.1 on July 27, 2020. The reported packages included the July 1, 2020 Android security patch. This is a historical rollout, not a new 2026 update; the exact build depended on the phone’s model and firmware variant.
Which U.S. models and builds were included?
The reported rollout covered U.S. Snapdragon models with these identifiers. Check the model number rather than relying on the phone’s retail name.

In these U.S. model families, U generally identifies carrier firmware and U1 the U.S.-unlocked software variant. Samsung’s Galaxy S9 T-Mobile support page also distinguishes the carrier-specific device. International models, including common Exynos versions such as G960F, G965F, and N960F, are outside this build list and followed different release schedules. Do not install these U.S. packages on an international model.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe correct U.S.-unlocked Galaxy S9+ model is SM-G965U1. One contemporary report appears to have a typo that labels it SM-G966U1; the listed build, G965U1UEU4ETG3, corresponds to SM-G965U1.
#1 Best Overall
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
- Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
- Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a charger and charging cable that may be generic.
- Fully Unlocked: Fully unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US-Cellular, Cricket, Metro, etc.), both domestically and internationally.
When did the update arrive, and what did it contain?
Contemporary reports dated July 27, 2020 covered the T-Mobile and U.S.-unlocked builds. T-Mobile’s rollout followed earlier releases in other markets and on other U.S. carriers. Distribution was staged, so eligible phones did not necessarily receive the over-the-air notification at the same time. The July 27 build and feature report identifies the packages above and lists the July 1, 2020 security patch.
The package moved these phones from Android 10 with One UI 2.0 to Android 10 with One UI 2.1. It was an incremental Samsung interface and feature update, not a new Android major version. The significance was the arrival of selected functions associated with newer Galaxy phones on the 2018 flagships.
What features were reported?
Contemporary changelog coverage described a set of One UI 2.1 additions. Treat these as reported features, not a guarantee that every item appeared on every S9, S9+, or Note 9 build.

Why might a feature be missing?
One UI 2.1 did not mean identical feature parity across devices. The reported source specifically cautioned that not all functions were expected on the Snapdragon Note 9. Camera features can depend on hardware, and carrier and unlocked firmware can have different changelogs. Some functions may also arrive through a Samsung app update rather than the operating-system package.
- Quick Share and Music Share require compatible Samsung devices and software.
- DeX functions can depend on the phone’s hardware and the connected accessories.
- A feature listed for One UI 2.1 may be absent, limited, or presented differently on a particular model or firmware.
How to check the software version or install the OTA
- Connect the phone to Wi-Fi and charge it sufficiently, or connect the charger.
- Open Settings > Software update.
- Tap Download and install or the equivalent update-check option. Labels can vary slightly by carrier firmware and software revision.
- If the update is offered, download and install it, then allow the phone to restart.
- After rebooting, open Settings > About phone > Software information. Check the One UI version, Android version, security patch level, and build number.
For the reported package, those fields should show One UI 2.1, Android 10, the July 1, 2020 security patch, and the matching U or U1 build from the table. T-Mobile describes a manufacturer-development and carrier-certification process for carrier software releases; this is one reason carrier and unlocked availability can differ. See T-Mobile’s software-update process.

A missing notification does not by itself prove the phone was ineligible: rollout timing, the device’s software history, and its carrier configuration can affect OTA availability.

- Color: Midnight Black
- Cosmetic Condition: Grade B: Very Good
- 60 Day Return Guarantee
- Restart the phone and check again over a reliable Wi-Fi connection.
- Confirm the exact model number under Settings > About phone. A U.S. build listed above does not apply to an international model such as G960F.
- Check available storage; an update may pause or fail if the phone is nearly full.
- Back up important data before any manual firmware installation.
- If the phone reports an incompatible or failed update, contact T-Mobile or Samsung support rather than trying random firmware files.
Manual Odin installation is an advanced fallback, not the normal route. A wrong model, region, carrier configuration, bootloader revision, or CSC package can block installation, cause data loss, or leave carrier features such as VoLTE, Wi-Fi Calling, or provisioning unusable. Downgrading may also be blocked by a bootloader revision mismatch, and manual installation can complicate support. Most owners should use the OTA intended for their configuration.
Does “unlocked” mean the update removes a SIM lock?
No. In this update context, “unlocked variant” refers to the U1 U.S.-unlocked firmware family, not a promise that installing the package removes a carrier SIM lock. A carrier-locked phone can receive T-Mobile firmware and remain SIM-locked; network unlocking follows a separate carrier eligibility and unlock process. T-Mobile handles that separately through its device-unlock support process.
Did One UI 2.1 mean Android 11 was coming?
No. Contemporary coverage said the S9 family and Note 9 were not expected to receive Android 11 under Samsung’s older flagship update policy. One UI 2.1 was likely the final major feature-layer update for these 2018 flagships; it should not be read as eligibility for Android 11 or One UI 3. That statement concerns major Android and interface updates, not every possible maintenance release.
