Whether Syrian officials met Hezbollah representatives in Türkiye remains disputed. Reuters reported on October 1, 2026, citing six sources, that a September meeting took place. Syria’s Ministry of Information said no such meeting occurred, and Turkish authorities also rejected the account. The available reporting does not independently establish which account is correct.

What did Reuters report?

Reuters reported that Syrian government representatives and Hezbollah held a meeting in Türkiye during September 2026. It described the encounter as the first reported face-to-face contact between the longtime foes. The report relied on six anonymous sources familiar with or briefed on the alleged meeting, including two Syrian officials, a US official and a senior Lebanese security source close to Hezbollah. Al Jazeera’s October 1 account summarized Reuters’ reporting, and Reuters’ report republished by Investing.com described its sourcing.

According to those sources, the reported contact was intended to reduce tensions and address security issues. Al Jazeera’s summary of Reuters said a Syrian official reportedly told Hezbollah that Damascus would not intervene militarily in Lebanon to disarm the group. Syrian officials were also said to have asked Hezbollah to help stop cross-border smuggling and dismantle remaining sleeper cells, particularly in southern Syria. These are claims attributed to Reuters’ sources, not confirmed agreements.

How did Syria and Türkiye respond?

Syria’s denial

Al Jazeera reported that Syria’s Ministry of Information denied the story on its official X account, saying: “claims are false. No such meeting took place”. The quotation is reproduced as Al Jazeera reported it; it is an institutional denial, not independent confirmation of what happened.

#1 Best Overall

Türkiye’s denial

Turkish Minute reported that the Turkish Presidency’s Directorate of Communications Center for Countering Disinformation called claims of a meeting under the auspices of Türkiye’s National Intelligence Organization baseless. It said the alleged details—including the date, location, content and contacts involved—did not reflect reality and were fictional or speculative. This is an official denial as relayed by the outlet.

What is—and is not—established?

Question What the reporting says
Did a meeting happen? Reuters’ six sources said it did; Syria and Türkiye denied it. The available reporting does not resolve the dispute.
Where and how long? Reuters said it could not confirm the location in Türkiye or the meeting’s duration.
Were there other meetings? Reuters could not confirm whether meetings happened before or after the reported September encounter. A Lebanese source reportedly said contact through Türkiye began about two months earlier.
Was an agreement reached or formal relations established? The available reports establish neither an agreement nor formal relations.

The distinction matters: a report based on anonymous sources is not the same as an independently verified event, while official denials do not by themselves settle the underlying question. The claims and denials should therefore remain attributed to their respective sources.

Why would contact be significant?

Hezbollah fought for years to defend Bashar al-Assad’s government during Syria’s civil war. Tensions rose after Assad was ousted in late 2024 and Syria’s new authorities accused Hezbollah of transferring arms through the country, according to Al Jazeera.

There had also been public indications of openness to contact. Al Jazeera reported that Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani said in July 2026 that Damascus was open to meeting Hezbollah, and that Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem said in a televised address the following month that the group had no objection to meeting Syria’s leadership. Those statements provide context but do not verify that the reported September meeting took place.
