A green infrastructure dashboard does not prove that a customer request reached the application or completed successfully. It proves only what its metrics measure. To catch failures outside that view, monitor the customer route from outside the application path, validate a meaningful result, and correlate failures with service telemetry.

Why can users fail while the dashboard stays green?

A dashboard can show healthy components while a request fails before reaching the layer those components report on. The key question is not simply whether a graph is green, but which requests contribute to it, where the measurement is taken, and what conditions cause data to appear.

AWS documents this distinction for Application Load Balancer metrics: they are reported when requests are flowing through the load balancer, at 60-second intervals while requests flow. When there are no requests or no data for a metric, that metric is not reported. ALB metrics also exclude health-check requests. These rules do not make the metrics defective or establish that a particular outage occurred; they define what the metrics can and cannot show. A healthy ALB panel alone cannot establish that a real customer transaction reached and completed at the application. AWS explains Application Load Balancer metric reporting and dimensions.

How can you tell whether a customer request reached the application?

Place an active check outside the application path it is meant to monitor, then have it exercise the critical customer route and verify a useful response. This gives you an observation independent of ordinary user traffic and can reveal a route that passive infrastructure metrics do not cover.

AWS describes CloudWatch Synthetics canaries as scheduled scripts that follow customer routes and actions, check endpoint or API availability and latency, and can run even when the application has no customer traffic. AWS documentation says they can run as frequently as once per minute; that is a product capability, not a recommended frequency for every service. Choose an interval that fits your operational needs, cost, rate limits, and the risk of generating load. AWS CloudWatch Synthetics documentation.

Define what a successful check means

A response code may be too shallow a test for a customer workflow. Decide what meaningful success looks like for the route: for example, the expected response content, completion of a key step, or a result that depends on a downstream service. The check should verify that outcome rather than merely confirm that a host responded.

For a simple public endpoint, an AWS Route 53 HTTP(S) health check considers a 2xx or 3xx response healthy. It can also search for a specified substring in the first 5,120 bytes of the response. A status code or substring can establish that a basic endpoint returned an expected response, but does not by itself prove that a multi-step application workflow or its dependencies worked. AWS Route 53 endpoint health-check behavior.

Should you use a simple health check or a scripted synthetic?

The right choice depends on how much of the customer experience you need to exercise and how much diagnostic detail you need when it fails.

Dimension Route 53 HTTP(S) health check CloudWatch Synthetics canary
Depth Checks an endpoint response. Can make multiple HTTP(S) calls to check a sequence of steps, an endpoint, and downstream dependencies.
Validation Uses response status and can optionally search for a substring in the first 5,120 bytes. Uses checks encoded in a script, allowing validation tailored to the route or workflow.
Network reach Designed to check public endpoints. Can reach private VPC resources and reachable on-premises workloads.
Setup effort Simpler to configure for a basic endpoint check. AWS characterizes canaries as requiring more planning and effort, in exchange for greater customization.
Diagnostic detail Provides endpoint health status. Can publish step-level metrics; failed runs can also provide reports, screenshots, logs, and HAR files where available.

AWS describes multi-step canaries and step-level metrics in its guidance on canaries for availability monitoring. For a simple public endpoint, a health check may be sufficient. For a workflow that depends on several calls or services, a scripted canary can expose which step failed and support separate alarms for individual steps.

How do you locate the boundary where the request failed?

Use the active check to establish that the customer route failed, then correlate its time and step with service metrics, traces, and dependency information. A service map can help identify a failing service or dependency when the relevant telemetry exists.

AWS Application Signals presents service and dependency topology, service metrics, SLO health, canaries, and client requests. Canary calls can be associated with services when X-Ray tracing is configured. The view depends on emitted metrics and traces; services or operations with no activity in the selected time window may not appear. A service map can therefore help investigate an observed failure, but it cannot automatically reveal every request that never produced telemetry. AWS Application Signals documentation.

What should you inspect when a canary fails?

Start with the failed run’s success-percent data and step-level results to see whether the overall route or a particular action broke. Then inspect the available artifacts for evidence about the response and the failure point.

  • SuccessPercent: Check the canary’s success metric to confirm the failure and its timing.
  • Step reports: Identify the action that failed in a multi-step check.
  • Screenshots and logs: Review them for visible errors and execution details, when available.
  • HAR files: Use the request archive, when available, to examine network activity during the run.

AWS troubleshooting guidance says to set a canary timeout of at least 15 seconds to accommodate Lambda cold starts and instrumentation startup. This is AWS-specific guidance for its canary setup, not a universal timeout rule for other monitoring tools. AWS canary troubleshooting guidance.

Quick Recap

How should you review your monitoring?

  1. Map the customer journey. Write down the critical route and the calls or dependencies required for its intended result.
  2. Identify each signal’s boundary. For every dashboard metric, determine which component emits it, which traffic it represents, and whether it depends on requests or other activity being present.
  3. Add an outside-in check. Run a health check for a basic public endpoint, or a scripted synthetic for a workflow that needs deeper validation or access to private resources.
  4. Define useful failure criteria. Validate the response or workflow outcome that matters to a customer, and choose an alert threshold and schedule that fit the service.
  5. Connect the result to telemetry. Correlate failed checks with service metrics and traces, and confirm that the relevant instrumentation is configured and emitting data.
  6. Rehearse the diagnosis. Verify that responders know where to find step results, logs, screenshots, and request archives for a failed run.
