To get your Amazon Fire tablet out of kid mode, open the parent-and-child menu in the child profile, choose Switch Profile, select the adult profile, and enter the device PIN or password if prompted. You do not need to delete the child profile to switch back.
Switch from Amazon Kids to your adult profile
- While in the child profile, tap the parent-and-child icon at the top right to open the parent overlay menu.
- Tap Switch Profile.
- Select the adult profile you want to use.
- Enter the device PIN or password if asked.
Amazon’s instructions use these steps to switch profiles. Menu labels or locations can vary by Fire tablet generation and software version. If you do not see the parent overlay menu, try the profile icon in Quick Settings: swipe down from the top of the screen, tap the profile icon at the lower left, then choose the adult profile. Amazon’s profile-switching help covers both routes.
Know which PIN or password you need
When switching from a child profile, Amazon says the tablet may ask for the device PIN or password. A separate, optional child lock-screen PIN can also be set for an individual child profile; Amazon says it is needed to exit that specific profile. These are distinct from the parental-controls password used on an adult profile. Amazon’s child profile settings guide explains how the optional child PIN is configured.

If Parental Controls are blocking an adult profile
Being in an Amazon Kids child profile is different from having Parental Controls enabled on an adult profile. Amazon describes Parental Controls as restrictions on an adult profile, intended for users 13 and older, that can limit access to features such as shopping, downloads, settings, and web browsing. For children under 13, Amazon directs users to child profiles. Amazon’s Parental Controls help says that if you forget the adult-profile parental-controls password, a factory reset is required to restore full access. That reset guidance applies to the forgotten parental-controls password—not to the ordinary process of switching out of a child profile.
Switching profiles is not deleting a child profile
Use Switch Profile when you simply want to leave Amazon Kids and return to an adult profile. Deleting a child profile is a separate action. Amazon says that removing one through Parent Dashboard makes it unusable and no longer visible on compatible Amazon Kids devices. Only remove the profile if you intend to stop using it, rather than as a way to exit kid mode. See Amazon’s child-profile removal guidance.
