To turn on dark mode in Windows 11 or Windows 10, open Settings > Personalization > Colors and select Dark under Choose your mode. You can also choose Custom to set Windows interface elements and apps to different modes. Individual apps may have their own appearance settings or may not support dark mode.
Turn on dark mode in Windows
- Open Settings. In Windows 11, press Windows + I for the quickest method; in Windows 10, you can also open Start > Settings.
- Select Personalization.
- Open Colors.
- Under Choose your mode, select Dark.
Windows applies the change to supported interface elements, including Start, the taskbar, and Action Center. Many apps may follow the setting, but not all do.
Choose Light, Dark, or Custom
Windows offers three color modes. Choose the one that matches how you want Windows and supported apps to look:

Use dark Windows controls with light apps
Choose Custom to make Windows interface elements dark while supported apps stay light, or to reverse the combination.

- Go to Settings > Personalization > Colors.
- Set Choose your mode to Custom.
- Set Choose your default Windows mode to Dark or Light.

Why some apps stay light
Windows’ color mode does not force every program to change appearance. Microsoft notes that some applications let you set dark or light mode individually, separate from the Windows color mode, and not all applications support dark mode.
If an app stays light, check its Theme or Appearance settings for a separate dark-mode option. Changing Windows’ mode may not affect an app that uses its own setting.

Dark mode, themes, and desktop backgrounds
Dark mode changes the appearance of supported interface elements; it does not automatically change the desktop wallpaper. To change the background, open Settings > Personalization > Background.
A Windows theme is broader personalization. To apply an available theme, open Settings > Personalization > Themes. You can also browse additional themes in the Microsoft Store. Applying a theme is optional; it is not required to turn on dark mode.

Accessibility alternative: Contrast themes
If your main concern is legibility or contrast, open Settings > Accessibility > Contrast themes. Contrast themes use distinct color combinations and can be customized. They are a separate accessibility setting, not a prerequisite for dark mode.
Windows 10 support note
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 PCs continue to work, but they no longer receive free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes through normal support.

Why did one of my apps remain light?
The app may not support dark mode, may not follow the Windows color mode, or may have a separate appearance setting. Check the app’s Theme or Appearance settings.
Does dark mode change my desktop wallpaper?
No. Change the desktop background separately under Settings > Personalization > Background.
Is dark mode the same as a contrast theme?
No. Dark mode is a color-mode choice. Contrast themes are a separate accessibility setting for using distinct color combinations to improve legibility or contrast.
Is the Windows theme setting required for dark mode?
No. Dark mode is available under Settings > Personalization > Colors. The Themes page is for broader personalization.
