You can switch browser tabs without reaching for the mouse. On Windows and Linux, Ctrl + Tab usually moves forward and Ctrl + Shift + Tab moves backward. On macOS, the shortcut depends more noticeably on the browser: Chrome and Firefox use Command + Option + Arrow, while Safari uses Control + Tab.
The tables below list the documented shortcuts for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari, including direct tab selection, reopening a closed tab, and the Firefox setting that changes how Ctrl + Tab works.

On a MacBook, Page Up and Page Down may be represented by the arrow keys with Fn. Edge explicitly uses Command + Fn + arrow for its Mac tab shortcuts.

To move the current Chrome tab rather than switch away from it, use Ctrl + Shift + Page Up or Ctrl + Shift + Page Down. On Mac, Chrome documents the same Ctrl-based commands.

Chrome also has a keyboard route for selecting a particular tab from the tab strip. On Windows, press F6 until the tabs receive focus, then press Tab to move forward or Shift + Tab to move backward through the tabs.

- Next tab: Ctrl + Tab or Ctrl + Page Down
- Previous tab: Ctrl + Shift + Tab or Ctrl + Page Up
- Select tab 1 through 8: Ctrl + 1 through Ctrl + 8
- Select the last tab: Ctrl + 9
- Reopen the last closed tab: Ctrl + Shift + T
- Duplicate the current tab: Ctrl + Shift + K
- Close the current tab: Ctrl + W or Ctrl + F4
Mac
- Next tab: Command + Fn + Down Arrow

Edge also lists Command + Tab and Shift + Command + Tab for moving between tabs on Mac. However, Command + Tab is normally macOS’s application switcher, so the browser-specific Command + Fn + arrow shortcuts are the safer recommendation.
In Edge, the browser menu is called Settings and more. Press Alt + F or Alt + E to open it.

Why Firefox may not behave like Chrome
Firefox has a setting named Ctrl+Tab cycles through tabs in recently used order. Its location is under Firefox Settings; Mozilla’s current shortcut reference does not provide a more specific menu path.
- When the setting is disabled, Ctrl + Tab moves to the next tab and Ctrl + Shift + Tab moves to the previous tab.
- When enabled, Ctrl + Tab cycles through tabs in most-recently-used order rather than strict left-to-right order.
- With that mode enabled, Ctrl + Shift + Tab opens Show All Tabs instead of simply selecting the previous tab.
If you need predictable sequential movement in Firefox, use Ctrl + Page Down and Ctrl + Page Up on Windows or Linux.
Firefox’s close-tab shortcut does not close pinned tabs with the normal command. A pinned tab must be unpinned or closed from its context menu.

Switch tabs in Safari
Safari’s documented tab commands use different names: Bring the next tab to the front and Bring the previous tab to the front.

Safari does not use Chrome’s Mac shortcut of Command + Option + arrow. It also does not publish the same numbered-tab shortcut pattern as Chrome, Edge, and Firefox in the current reference.
Safari’s setting Press Tab to highlight each item on a webpage is found under Safari preferences > Advanced. That setting controls focus on webpage elements; it is not required for the normal tab-switching shortcuts. macOS’s All controls keyboard setting makes the Tab key highlight buttons and other controls as well.

Chrome, Edge, and Firefox follow the same desktop pattern:

9 does not select tab number 9. If there are 20 open tabs, the shortcut takes you to tab 20. Direct number shortcuts select only tabs 1 through 8; use next/previous commands for any others.

Shortcuts that are often confused
- Do not use Alt + Tab for browser tabs on Windows. It switches between application windows. Use Ctrl + Tab or the browser’s documented alternative instead.
- Do not assume Command + Tab switches browser tabs on Mac. It normally opens the macOS app switcher. Safari, Chrome, and Firefox document different browser-tab commands, and Edge’s listing can conflict with the system shortcut.
- Do not assume Firefox’s Ctrl + Tab is always sequential. Check the recently-used-tab setting or use the Page Down/Page Up alternatives.
- Remember that laptops may hide Page Up and Page Down. Try Fn with the relevant arrow key if the shortcut does nothing.

How do I switch to the last tab?
In Chrome, Edge, and Firefox, press Ctrl + 9 on Windows/Linux or Command + 9 on Mac. This selects the rightmost tab, regardless of how many tabs are open.
How do I reopen a tab I accidentally closed?
Press Ctrl + Shift + T on Windows/Linux, or Command + Shift + T on Mac. Repeating the shortcut reopens additional tabs in closure order.
Why does Alt + Tab not switch browser tabs?
On Windows, Alt + Tab is the operating-system shortcut for switching between application windows. Use the browser’s tab shortcut, normally Ctrl + Tab.
Why does Ctrl + Tab behave differently in Firefox?
