To switch between Groq and OpenAI in PHP without tying your application to either vendor’s SDK, define a small application-owned interface, implement one adapter per provider, and inject a deterministic mock in tests. Groq’s OpenAI-compatible endpoint can reduce transport changes, but compatibility is partial: a shared URL or client does not guarantee identical features or behavior.

What the application should own

Your application should depend on the behavior it needs—such as generating a text response—not on a provider’s client classes, request format, or response objects. Put provider-specific details behind adapters, then select an adapter through configuration or dependency injection.

  • Application contract: a narrow interface using normalized inputs and outputs.
  • Provider adapters: each handles credentials, endpoint configuration, request translation, response parsing, and provider-specific errors or capabilities.
  • Test double: a fake that implements the same interface and returns predictable responses or errors.

Keep model identifiers, credentials, and endpoints in the relevant adapter or configuration. Avoid exposing every provider option in the shared interface: include a capability only when the application needs it, and represent provider differences explicitly rather than implying universal parity.

Define a narrow PHP contract

For a simple text-generation workflow, a contract can be as small as this. The input and output classes are application-owned value objects; their fields should reflect the needs of your application.

interface LlmProvider
{
    public function generate(Prompt $prompt): GenerationResult;
}

Prompt might hold normalized messages and any shared generation settings your application actually uses. GenerationResult should expose the result your business logic needs, not a vendor SDK response object. If the application later needs streaming or tool use, decide whether to add a separate contract or an explicit capability; do not silently flatten distinct behaviors into a misleading common method.

Implement and select provider adapters

Create an OpenAI adapter, a Groq adapter, and a mock adapter that all implement LlmProvider. Each real adapter translates the normalized prompt into that provider’s request, maps the response into GenerationResult, and converts failures into application-level errors. Business logic then calls the interface rather than branching on provider names.

$provider = $providerFactory->fromConfig($config);
$result = $provider->generate($prompt);

The factory or your dependency-injection container can select the implementation from environment-specific configuration. Tests can inject the mock directly; changing providers should not require edits to application behavior.

Can you use an OpenAI client with Groq?

Often, for a compatible chat-completions workflow, but treat it as a transport shortcut—not a promise of interchangeable features. Groq documents https://api.groq.com/openai/v1 as its OpenAI-compatible base URL, and documents chat completions at POST https://api.groq.com/openai/v1/chat/completions, with messages and model required in the request. See Groq’s API overview and API reference.

Groq describes its API as mostly compatible and lists unsupported OpenAI features in its OpenAI compatibility documentation. Check the exact endpoint and features your application uses, including structured output, streaming, and tool use. Keep model names and endpoint configuration provider-specific, and handle unsupported capabilities deliberately. A shared OpenAI-style request may save integration work while still requiring adapter logic.

Use a provider package when you want a shared workflow

Instead of maintaining every adapter yourself, you can use a PHP SDK organized around provider packages. The PHP AI SDK describes providers as handling authentication, endpoint configuration, request translation, response parsing, and capability adapters while exposing a common workflow. Its provider documentation also indicates that capabilities can differ across providers; see its capability overview.

Approach Provider breadth and control Capability visibility Test seam Dependency constraints
Application-owned adapters You own adapter logic for each provider and can tailor the contract to your application. You decide how to expose differences; avoid promising features every provider does not support. Inject your own deterministic fake through the application interface. Depends on your implementation and any underlying clients.
Shared PHP provider SDK Check that the package supports each provider and operation you need; it owns common workflow and adapter concerns. Review the SDK’s capability model and provider-specific support. Confirm that application services can still use an injected fake without network access. Version-specific; verify PHP and package requirements before installation.

Choose based on how much adapter logic you want to maintain, whether needed capabilities remain visible, and whether the package’s providers and version constraints fit your project. Neither approach removes the need to test actual provider behavior.

Mock provider behavior in PHP tests

For unit tests, inject a fake provider that returns fixed results, throws expected application-level errors, and exercises edge cases. This keeps tests deterministic and avoids provider credentials, network dependence, and changes in remote responses.

final class FakeLlmProvider implements LlmProvider
{
    public function __construct(private GenerationResult $result) {}

    public function generate(Prompt $prompt): GenerationResult
    {
        return $this->result;
    }
}

For adapter tests, mock the HTTP layer instead: queue controlled responses, call the adapter, and inspect the outgoing request for the expected endpoint, headers, and payload. Guzzle’s v5 documentation describes queued mock responses and notes why remote API calls are a poor fit for predictable unit tests. Its examples are version-specific, so check the Guzzle documentation for your installed version before copying its APIs.

Keep a smaller integration-test layer for live provider behavior when credentials and network access are intentionally available. Cover missing credentials, provider error mapping, malformed or unexpected responses, and unsupported features. These tests complement—not replace—unit tests with fakes.
