Microsoft says the Surface Laptop Ultra is twice as fast at returning local AI responses and six times as fast at generating video as an M5-generation MacBook Pro. But the company has not disclosed enough about those comparisons to verify the ratios, and the reporting available as of October 9, 2026, contains no independent test establishing that the Surface is faster overall.
What Microsoft claims—and what is missing
Microsoft’s stated comparison is specific in its headline numbers: 2× faster local AI responses and 6× faster video generation against an M5-generation MacBook Pro. Those figures are Microsoft claims reported by Notebookcheck on October 8, 2026; they are not results from an identified independent benchmark.
Notebookcheck and The Next Web, reporting on October 7, 2026, say Microsoft did not identify the Mac configuration, AI model, or software used for the ratios, or provide a reproducible test method. Without those details, readers cannot tell whether the machines ran the same workload under comparable conditions—or reproduce the results themselves.

“Local AI responses” and “video generation” can describe very different tasks. Performance depends on the workload, the software and model versions, the quality settings, and how the result is measured. A ratio without that context cannot show whether it reflects a typical task, a particular configuration, or a narrow demonstration.
#1 Best Overall

What a useful local-AI test should disclose
- The exact laptop configurations, power modes, and software versions.
- The AI model, its quantization, and the prompt or task used.
- Whether the result measures time to first token, time to complete a response, or throughput—and what counts as the same output.
- Whether the machines were plugged in or on battery, and how thermal conditions and repeat runs were handled.
What a useful video-generation test should disclose
- The input material, application, and effects or processing steps.
- The export settings and quality target, so the output is comparable.
- The elapsed time for each machine to produce that same output, with configurations and power conditions identified.
These are requirements for assessing a future comparison, not details of a test Microsoft has publicly described in the reporting cited here.
What the available comparisons establish
Tom’s Guide’s October 8, 2026, comparison gives a useful illustration of why configuration matters, but it is an early comparison rather than a final performance verdict. Its listed starting configurations are:
Rank #2
- With 16 GB of memory, runs as many programs as you want without losing the execution
- The 13.5" 2256 x 1504 screen provides a great movie watching experience
- 512 GB SSD is enough to store your essential documents and files, favorite songs, movies and pictures
- 8 Hours battery run time helps you stay unwired and work longer non-stop
| Model | Listed starting price | Memory | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surface Laptop Ultra | $2,599 | 24 GB | 512 GB |
| MacBook Pro M5 Pro, 14-inch | $2,499 | 24 GB | 1 TB |
| MacBook Pro M5 Pro, 16-inch | $2,999 | 24 GB | 1 TB |
These starting configurations are not storage-matched. Tom’s Guide also notes that a full test is needed before deciding whether the Surface is better. Its comparison is not an independent replication of Microsoft’s AI or video ratios. See Tom’s Guide’s early comparison.
Microsoft’s separate display claim has a stated condition: its October 7, 2026, device announcement says the Surface reaches 2,000 nits peak HDR brightness measured over a 10 percent window with HDR content, compared with MacBook Pro M5 Pro published specifications as of October 1, 2026. That documented display measurement is separate from the AI and video claims; it does not supply their missing test methodology. The details appear in Microsoft’s announcement.

How to judge the claim as a buyer
Treat the ratios as a reason to look for independent, like-for-like testing—not as proof that the Surface is faster for your work. A meaningful comparison should use the same task and software versions, disclose both machines’ exact configurations and power modes, and measure equivalent output. For a purchase decision, also compare workload and application compatibility, display size and characteristics, battery and power behavior, and price at configurations that fit your needs.
The Surface Laptop Ultra starts at $2,599, with preorders announced October 7 and availability beginning October 16, 2026, according to Microsoft. Its launch post describes NVIDIA RTX Spark and up to 128 GB unified memory, and positions the machine for demanding local models and agent workflows; these are vendor descriptions, not independent performance findings. Availability and specifications are described in Microsoft’s launch announcement.

An independent review that names the exact Surface and Mac configurations, runs the same AI and video tasks with disclosed software and settings, and reports repeatable measurements could show whether Microsoft’s ratios hold under those conditions. Until such results are available, neither the 2× AI figure nor the 6× video figure establishes a general performance advantage.
