A supervisor password is usually the password that protects BIOS or UEFI settings; “BIOS password” is a broader, vendor-dependent label that may refer to this or to other firmware passwords. On Lenovo ThinkPads, the terms are used together for the supervisor password. Dell calls the equivalent credential an administrator or setup password.
What a supervisor password protects
A supervisor password limits who can change BIOS/UEFI configuration. Lenovo says it deters unauthorized configuration changes and prompts for the password when someone tries to enter the BIOS menu. Dell describes its administrator (sometimes called setup) password as protecting firmware settings: users may be able to view settings but cannot change them without the password. Dell also states that this password “Does NOT prevent normal booting.”
So, if Windows or another operating system starts normally but you are asked for a password when entering firmware setup or changing a setting, the prompt is likely for a supervisor, administrator, or setup password.
How the common password types differ

Which password do you need?
- To change boot order, Secure Boot, virtualization, or another firmware option: you usually need the supervisor/administrator/setup password.
- To require a password before someone can use the computer: look for a separate power-on or system password.
- If a prompt appears after selecting a drive or moving it to another computer: it may be a hard-disk password, not the BIOS setup password.
- If Windows rejects a password: that is a Windows account credential, not necessarily a firmware password.
On Lenovo systems, the supervisor password has more authority than the power-on password: Lenovo says the supervisor password can be used to access the computer when both are set, and is required to change or remove the power-on password.

What “BIOS password” means depends on the manufacturer
“BIOS password” is not one universally precise credential name. Lenovo labels its credential “Supervisor password (BIOS password).” Dell uses “Admin Password” and sometimes “Setup Password” for the settings-protection role. Other manufacturer terminology may distinguish setup, system/startup, and storage-drive passwords. Check the exact prompt and the documentation for your computer model rather than assuming every BIOS-related password serves the same purpose.

Recovery depends on the manufacturer and exact model. Do not assume removing the CMOS battery will clear it: Lenovo directs users with forgotten passwords to an authorized service provider, and its model guidance warns that some administrator passwords cannot be reset and may require system-board replacement with proof of purchase.

- Identify the computer’s manufacturer and exact model.
- Find that model’s official password-recovery policy and follow its stated process.
- If the manufacturer requires it, contact an authorized service provider and be prepared to provide proof of ownership.
A Windows administrator password is separate: HP explicitly says setting the Windows administrator password does not set the BIOS administrator password.
