Supervised learning trains a model using examples with known answers; unsupervised learning looks for patterns in data without target labels that specify the desired answer. Choose supervised learning when you need to predict a defined category or value and have suitable labeled examples. Choose unsupervised learning when you want to explore groupings or relationships and can evaluate whether the patterns are useful.
What is the difference between supervised and unsupervised learning?
The distinction is the training signal: supervised methods compare model outputs with known targets, while unsupervised methods seek structure without a target label defining the answer. IBM summarizes the distinction this way: “The main distinction between the two approaches is the use of labeled data sets.”

These are broad categories, not guarantees of accuracy or a complete list of machine-learning methods. Data quality, task design, validation, and the method selected all affect whether a result is useful.
What does supervised learning do?
In supervised learning, training examples pair inputs with a known output. The model adjusts its predictions in relation to those targets, then can be used to predict outputs for new inputs.

Classification predicts categories
Classification assigns an input to a discrete category. For example, a spam filter can classify a message as spam or not spam. The categories are defined in the training targets.
Regression predicts values
Regression estimates a continuous value, such as a price, duration, or temperature. It is appropriate when the desired output is a numerical quantity rather than one of a set of categories.

What does unsupervised learning do?
Unsupervised learning works with data that has no target labels specifying the desired answer. Its methods look for structure, but people still select the data and method and must interpret and validate what the method finds. IBM describes applications including market segmentation, anomaly detection, and recommendation systems; an algorithm’s output is not automatically accurate or useful without validation.
Clustering groups similar observations
Clustering places observations into groups based on similarity. K-means is a familiar clustering method. A business might use clustering to explore customer segments, but the resulting groups need interpretation before they can guide a decision.

Association finds recurring relationships
Association methods identify recurring relationships among items or variables. Market-basket analysis, for instance, looks for items that tend to appear together in transactions.
Dimensionality reduction represents data more compactly
Dimensionality reduction represents data with fewer features while retaining useful structure. It is often used in preprocessing, rather than as a direct prediction of a labeled answer.

How do you choose between supervised and unsupervised learning?
Start with the question you need to answer, not a preferred algorithm name.
- Choose supervised learning when the outcome is defined in advance, such as a category to classify or a value to predict, and you can obtain enough reliable examples with those targets. Its practical cost may include the effort required to create labels, especially when labeling needs expert judgment.
- Choose unsupervised learning when you want to explore structure, groupings, or relationships and do not have one target answer already specified. Plan how to assess whether the discovered patterns are meaningful; the method does not validate its own interpretation.
If the task or its data does not fit either description neatly, treat the choice as a design question: clarify what counts as a useful result and what evidence will validate it. Neither approach is inherently better for every problem.

What other types of machine learning are there?
Supervised and unsupervised learning are not an exhaustive taxonomy. IBM also identifies semi-supervised, self-supervised, and reinforcement learning.
- Semi-supervised learning uses both labeled and unlabeled examples.
- Self-supervised learning constructs supervisory signals from the data itself. Sources differ in how they place it relative to the supervised/unsupervised boundary, so it is useful to understand it as a related paradigm rather than force it into a single universal label.
- Reinforcement learning trains an agent through actions and reward or penalty feedback.
These approaches add useful distinctions, but the central choice between supervised and unsupervised learning remains whether training has target answers or another supervisory signal.
