Superpowers is an open-source workflow framework for AI coding agents—not a new AI model. It is designed to make an agent clarify requirements, get approval for a design, create an implementation plan, and then build and verify the change through small, test-focused steps. Its documentation explains the intended process; it does not establish that using Superpowers improves software quality or delivery speed in measured comparisons.

What Superpowers is—and what it is not

The Superpowers project describes itself as a software-development methodology for coding agents, built from composable skills and instructions intended to get an agent to use them. In practical terms, it adds a structured workflow around an agent’s coding abilities. It is not a foundation model, and it does not replace the coding-agent application or command-line harness you use.

The distinction matters: Superpowers defines practices the agent is meant to follow, such as planning, test-driven development (TDD), and code review. That is different from evidence that those practices are followed consistently across every supported agent or that they produce better outcomes. The project’s overview is in the Superpowers repository.

How the Superpowers workflow is meant to work

The workflow delays implementation until the request is understood and a plan is agreed. The project describes a sequence from brainstorming and design through planning, execution, review, and branch completion. The precise interaction depends on the coding-agent harness and task.

  1. Clarify and explore. The agent asks questions and uses brainstorming to refine the goal and requirements rather than immediately changing code.
  2. Present a design. It proposes an approach for the developer to validate. Approval is the gate before moving on to a detailed implementation plan.
  3. Write a step-by-step plan. The project calls for bite-sized tasks. The agent is also expected to check for relevant skills before carrying out tasks.
  4. Implement and review. Work proceeds either through task-focused subagents or inline plan execution. The framework emphasizes TDD and code review as part of this phase.
  5. Verify and finish the branch. Before wrapping up, the agent checks the work and presents choices for integrating or otherwise finishing the development branch.

This sequence is a description of the framework’s intended behavior, not an independent audit of how every harness implements it. Developers should still inspect the proposed plan, review code changes, and run the checks appropriate to their project.

What skills does it include?

The repository organizes skills around testing, debugging, collaboration, and meta-work (creating or improving skills). Examples include:

  • Testing: TDD and verification before declaring a task complete.
  • Debugging: systematic investigation intended to identify root causes before applying fixes.
  • Planning: brainstorming, writing plans, and executing them.
  • Collaboration: parallel-agent and subagent-driven development, plus requesting and receiving code review.
  • Git workflow: worktree use and development-branch completion.
  • Skill authoring: guidance for creating skills.

Anthropic’s Claude Marketplace listing also describes requirements refinement, a red-green-refactor cycle, debugging, subagent development, code review, and skill authoring. That listing presents plugin capabilities; it is not evidence of engineering results.

Installing Superpowers for your coding agent

The project documents installation paths for Claude Code, Codex App and CLI, Cursor, Devin CLI, Factory Droid, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot CLI, Grok Build CLI, Kimi Code, OpenCode, Pi, Qwen Code, Hermes Agent, and Muse. The instructions differ by harness: some use marketplace installation, while others use repository-based or CLI steps. Follow the current instructions for the agent you actually use in the official repository, rather than assuming one command works everywhere.

The repository also says to install Superpowers separately for each harness if you use more than one. Plugin commands and supported platforms can change, so check the project’s current installation guidance when setting it up.

Does Superpowers make AI coding more reliable?

It is designed to encourage a more disciplined process: clarify the request, validate a design, plan small tasks, use tests, investigate bugs, and review changes. Those are useful practices to evaluate in a coding workflow, but the project documentation and marketplace listing do not provide a controlled comparison, benchmark, or independently published outcome statistic showing that Superpowers makes software safer, faster, or more maintainable.

Assess it as a process layer, not a guarantee. When trying it, consider whether it elicits requirements before coding, produces plans you can inspect, fits your testing and review practices, and supports the agent workflows you need. Also weigh the added interaction and process overhead against the task: a structured design-and-review sequence may suit a substantial change better than a tiny, well-specified edit. These are evaluation criteria, not a performance ranking.

License, support, and the documented telemetry detail

The repository identifies Superpowers as MIT licensed and names Jesse Vincent and the broader Prime Radiant team. It invites enterprise users interested in commercial support, additional tooling, or managed spending to contact Prime Radiant; the reviewed project information does not state prices or service levels.

The project documentation says an optional visual companion feature loads the Prime Radiant logo from the company website and includes the Superpowers version, not details about the project, prompt, or coding agent. It says the feature can be disabled with SUPERPOWERS_DISABLE_TELEMETRY and that the project honors Claude Code telemetry opt-out variables. These statements describe the documented feature and should not be read as a broader privacy guarantee about the coding-agent harness or other software you use.
