Superfile is an open-source file manager that runs inside a terminal. It brings common file operations into an interactive, multi-panel interface, with options for previews, hotkeys, themes and plugins. It is designed for people comfortable working in a terminal—not as a shell replacement or a graphical desktop file manager.
What is superfile?
Built with Go and Bubble Tea, superfile provides a terminal UI for navigating and managing files. The project describes it as “A fancy, modern terminal file manager” and says it is crafted for developers who live in the terminal. Those are the project’s descriptions, not independent performance assessments.
Its advertised file operations include copying, moving, deleting and renaming files, as well as fuzzy search and bulk operations. The interface also offers multiple panels, image previews, customizable hotkeys, themes and community plugins.
What the interface and controls offer
The official tutorial describes a file panel alongside areas for the sidebar, processes, metadata, clipboard and command execution. This layout keeps file navigation and related information in one terminal interface.

Controls can change between versions, so check the current tutorial if a key does not behave as expected. Superfile also supports remapping hotkeys and choosing themes; the project documents plugin and theme support in its repository.

Choose the command or package route for your operating system and package manager from the official installation instructions. The documented options include:

- Windows: a PowerShell installer, Winget or Scoop.
- Community-maintained packages: Homebrew, Arch, Nix, Pixi and x-cmd.
After installation, run spf in a terminal to start the program. Users with Go can also follow the build-from-source instructions in the repository. Package availability and installation commands may change, so use the live instructions rather than relying on copied commands from an older guide.
Platform support and setup considerations
The project website lists macOS, Linux and Windows, but the repository README qualifies Windows support as “Not fully supported yet.” Windows is therefore an available installation target, but the project does not present it as equally mature as the other listed platforms.

A Nerd Font is recommended for the interface, but the installation documentation says superfile still works without one. Treat it as an optional appearance choice, not a prerequisite.

Superfile is worth considering if you want to manage files without leaving the terminal and prefer a visual panel-based interface to entering each operation as a shell command. Its advertised features may also suit users who value previews or want to tailor their interface with hotkeys, themes and plugins.

It is less suitable if you need a graphical desktop file manager, expect a command-line shell replacement, or require fully mature Windows support. When comparing it with another terminal file manager, weigh operating-system support, layout and preview needs, customization options, package-manager availability and how comfortable you are working in a terminal. No single tool is the best choice for every workflow.
