“Super glue for cells” refers to a laboratory-designed polymer that can adhere to cell membranes—not household cyanoacrylate glue. In a 2013 report, researchers described using a polymer with choline-phosphate groups to bind different cell membranes and stick red blood cells together. Tissue engineering and wound closure were suggested as possible future uses, not established medical treatments.
What is the “super glue for cells”?
The phrase most often points to a synthetic polymer bearing choline-phosphate (CP) groups. The Royal Society of Chemistry reported on 21 May 2013 that researchers used the material to stick red blood cells together and found that branched polyglycerols containing CP bound to a variety of cell membranes. The underlying paper, by Xifei Yu, Xiaoqiang Yang, Sonja Horte, Jayachandran N. Kizhakkedathu and Donald E. Brooks, was titled “ATRP synthesis of poly(2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl choline phosphate): a multivalent universal biomembrane adhesive”.
Despite the nickname, this is not a consumer glue and should not be confused with household super glue. The sources describe a research material and do not establish that it is commercially available or clinically approved.

The design began with phosphatidylcholine (PC), a phospholipid head group found in nearly all cell membranes, with some primitive bacteria as an exception. The researchers explored reversing the head-group orientation to create choline phosphate (CP), reasoning that reversing the arrangement of positive and negative charges might produce adhesion.

Study leader Donald E. Brooks put the hypothesis this way: “Phosphatidyl choline [PC] is found in every cell membrane, except for some primitive bacteria, so we wondered what would happen if we were to turn the molecule around to choline phosphate [CP]? Would you get an adhesive effect because the positive and negative charges are now inverted?”
The resulting polymer presents many CP groups, making it multivalent: multiple groups can participate in interactions with a membrane. The reported outcome was binding across a variety of cell membranes, including the demonstration of sticking red blood cells together. The available account does not give quantitative adhesion-strength measurements or detailed experimental conditions, so it does not support a more specific performance claim.

Is this the same as fibronectin, another “glue” for cells?
No. “Super glue for cells” can also describe a natural role played by the extracellular matrix, particularly fibronectin. A 2001 University of Washington account explains that fibronectin occurs in connective tissue, where protein fibers attach to cells and connect with other proteins. Movement of those fibers transmits forces to the attached cells.

Could it be used for wounds or tissue engineering?
The 2013 report identified securing cells in specific positions for tissue engineering and wound closure as potential applications. Those are proposed uses, not proof that the polymer is an effective wound treatment, a medical product, or ready for use in people. The sources do not establish clinical approval or current commercial availability.
