The right choice depends on your data relationships, query patterns, offline needs, Firebase integrations, and workload costs—not on a blanket claim that relational databases are taking over.
What are you comparing when you compare Supabase and Firebase?
Supabase is a platform built around PostgreSQL. Firebase is a broader platform with multiple products, including two database choices that work differently: Cloud Firestore and SQL Connect. So the practical comparison is usually Supabase versus Firestore, Supabase versus SQL Connect, or a choice between all three—not simply SQL versus Firebase.
The distinction matters because a database model shapes how you represent data, query it, authorize access, and build client behavior. Firebase’s authentication and client SDK ecosystem may also be part of the decision, while Supabase’s Postgres-centered environment may suit teams that want direct database access and SQL workflows.
How do their data models and workflows differ?
Supabase: PostgreSQL at the center
Supabase’s architecture documentation describes the platform’s services as communicating with a PostgreSQL instance in each project, and users can access that database directly. Relational tables, foreign keys, indexes, SQL queries, and PostgreSQL tooling are central to the way the platform is organized. Supabase also describes authentication integrated with Postgres Row-Level Security (RLS), letting database policies participate in access control.

Supabase’s open-source components and self-hosting options may appeal to teams seeking more control over their deployment. Those facts do not by themselves make operating a self-hosted system simpler: hosting, upgrades, backups, security, and reliability remain operational responsibilities.
Firestore: documents, collections, and client synchronization
Cloud Firestore is a managed NoSQL database organized as collections of documents. Documents can contain nested objects and subcollections, so data can be shaped around the records an application reads. Firestore supports filters and sorting, but its query model is document-oriented rather than a general relational SQL workflow; queries are shallow at the document level.
Firebase client applications can use realtime listeners and Firebase Authentication with Security Rules. Server-side access follows a different authorization path, using Google Cloud IAM. This division means teams should assess client and server access separately rather than assume one security mechanism governs every request.

SQL Connect: PostgreSQL inside the Firebase ecosystem
Firebase SQL Connect is Google’s relational database option for Firebase developers, backed by Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL. Developers define a schema and operations through GraphQL; the service generates a PostgreSQL schema from the declared model and stores deployed operations on the server. Supported SDKs include Kotlin for Android, iOS, Flutter, and web.

SQL Connect is not just another name for Firestore. It is a separate Firebase database service with a relational model and its own schema and operation workflow. Teams considering it should confirm that its current SDKs and server/client operation model fit their app; Firestore’s document behavior and SQL Connect’s relational behavior are not interchangeable merely because both are Firebase products.
Which option fits your application’s data?
| Option | Data model and workflow | Potential fit | Trade-off to examine |
|---|---|---|---|
| Supabase | PostgreSQL-centered; direct database access, SQL, and RLS | Applications with explicit relationships, SQL-centric development, or a need for PostgreSQL tooling | Confirm that the team wants a Postgres-centered platform and account for its chosen hosting and operational model |
| Firebase with Firestore | Documents and collections; client SDKs, realtime listeners, and Security Rules | Applications whose data maps naturally to documents and that benefit from Firestore’s client synchronization behavior | Check whether document-shaped data and query patterns remain workable as relationships and access needs evolve |
| Firebase with SQL Connect | PostgreSQL-backed relational data, with schema and operations declared through GraphQL | Teams seeking relational data while using Firebase’s supported client SDK workflow | Validate the service’s current SDK, operation, and integration requirements against the app rather than assuming it behaves like Firestore or Supabase |
A useful first question is whether the application’s important records have relationships that need to be queried and maintained explicitly. If they do, PostgreSQL—through Supabase or SQL Connect—may be a natural fit. If records are mostly independent documents and the client synchronization model matches the product, Firestore may be a good fit. Neither observation proves that one database will be faster or cheaper for your workload.

How should you compare offline use, realtime, and access control?
Firestore’s documented offline behavior
Firestore supports realtime listeners and client offline persistence. Its documented defaults differ by platform: persistence is enabled by default on Android and Apple platforms, while web persistence is disabled by default and supports Chrome, Safari, and Firefox. When a device reconnects, local changes synchronize; if multiple changes affect the same document, Firestore resolves them with last-write-wins behavior.
On the web, cached data is not automatically cleared between sessions. If an app handles sensitive information on shared or unmanaged devices, account for that persistence behavior in the design and security review. Also test conflict cases that matter to the product: last-write-wins may be acceptable for some fields and unsuitable for others.
Realtime and offline design with Supabase
Supabase documents Realtime and PostgreSQL-integrated authentication and RLS, but that does not establish that it provides Firestore’s same built-in client-side offline persistence semantics. If offline work is a requirement, specify the desired local storage, reconnection, synchronization, and conflict-resolution behavior, then evaluate the particular client architecture you plan to use.

There is no universal cheaper choice without assumptions about workload, geography, and configuration. Firebase’s published Cloud Firestore Standard pricing includes no-cost allowances for stored data, network egress, and daily document reads, writes, and deletes; use beyond the allowances is billed under Google Cloud pricing, with rates that can vary by configuration and location. Supabase lists a free plan with quotas for database size and egress, among other resources. Its paid monthly costs combine a subscription with variable usage fees, and compute is charged independently of database use because each project has a dedicated Postgres instance.
These are different billing models, not a like-for-like cost verdict. Check the current pricing pages before committing: provider plans and rates can change, and the published allowances are plan terms rather than evidence of what a particular application will spend.

Build an estimate from the same workload
For each candidate, estimate the same application behavior rather than comparing headline plan labels. Include:
- Expected database size and data growth
- Read, write, and delete volume, including how listeners or repeated client queries affect usage
- Network egress, storage, active users, and project count
- Compute requirements and the regions where users and services will run
- Realtime messages or other platform-specific usage that applies to the design
Then validate the estimate with a representative proof of concept. A free allowance can be useful for experimentation, but it does not predict production cost on its own.
What changes if you migrate from Firestore to Supabase?
A Firestore-to-Supabase migration can involve substantially more than copying documents. The amount of redesign depends on the existing document structure, denormalization, query logic, security rules, offline behavior, functions, authentication, and storage dependencies. Data that was convenient to fetch as a document may need to become related PostgreSQL tables, and client queries and authorization rules may need to change with it.
Supabase’s migration guidance recommends a staged approach: keep services running side by side while transferring data, then replace Firebase SDK calls incrementally and move toward PostgreSQL structures such as normalized tables, foreign keys, indexes, and RLS. This is the vendor’s recommended process, not a measured guarantee about migration time, downtime, or success. Keeping JSON-like data initially and normalizing later can be a design option, but it should follow the app’s query and integrity needs rather than serve as an automatic migration rule.
If the goal is relational modeling while retaining a Firebase workflow, SQL Connect may be worth evaluating before a full platform migration. Do not assume a migration path, feature parity, or compatibility without checking the current product documentation and testing the app’s dependencies.
How to make the decision without guessing
- Map the data. Identify core entities, relationships, nested records, and the queries the app must support.
- List client requirements. Specify supported platforms, authentication, authorization, realtime updates, and offline behavior—including conflict rules.
- Choose the actual candidates. Compare Supabase with Firestore or SQL Connect as separate alternatives, rather than treating Firebase as one database model.
- Build a small representative feature. Implement realistic reads, writes, authorization rules, and offline conflict cases if offline use matters.
- Estimate the same workload on each. Use current provider pricing and your expected traffic, storage, region, compute, and project configuration.
- Review operating fit. Consider SDKs, team familiarity, platform integrations, managed-service responsibilities, and any hosting control the team needs.
There is no workload-independent performance winner established by the product information described here. A proof of concept should measure the queries and client behavior your application actually needs.
