Suniye is an Android reading-aid project built by Himanshu Kumar for his parents, who have weak eyesight and often ask him to read WhatsApp messages, pictures, labels, and documents. It is designed to turn selected text into speech and make basic playback controls easy to reach—but it has not yet been shown working independently for the people it was made for. Its author’s October 4, 2026 project post describes implementation and limited emulator checks, not an independent evaluation.
What Suniye is designed to do
Suniye is a personal Android project focused on a practical family problem: helping someone with weak eyesight hear information on a phone or paper without having to ask another person to read it. The pilot is described as supporting Android 11 and later. It accepts text, images, and PDFs through several Android entry points, then reads selected or recognized text aloud.
The interface uses large Hindi controls: रोकिए (Stop), फिर सुनिए (Repeat), and धीरे सुनिए (Slow). The Stop control stays below scrolling content so it should remain reachable during a long reading. Settings and optional spoken commands are placed behind caregiver setup rather than in the everyday controls.
How a parent can send content to read
Paper, photos, and documents
The project describes camera capture for paper, choosing an existing photo, and opening PDFs. It can also receive text, images, and PDFs through Android’s Share action. Text may come from Android’s accessible text or from bundled OCR for Devanagari and Latin scripts.

When OCR recognizes text in an image, the post says the image stays on the phone. OCR can still misread content: Kumar reports that a dense bill was misread, prompting a confidence-based suggestion to retake the image. That prompt is a recovery aid, not an accuracy guarantee.
WhatsApp messages
The intended WhatsApp route uses a floating सुनिए control after a caregiver completes setup. The post describes a labelled setup walkthrough, but says the WhatsApp reading flow has not been tested end to end. It should therefore be treated as a planned route, not a verified way for a parent to read messages independently.

What happens when Suniye reads something
Speech and connectivity
For new narration, the app sends text through an authenticated backend to ElevenLabs, using the Raju voice. Fixed help prompts use bundled Raju recordings. After a successful reading, the audio is cached so Repeat and Slow can work offline. A new reading requires a connection.
Recommended Free Tools
If audio is unavailable, the original content remains visible. The app does not silently switch to Android or browser speech, so a failed narration will not be replaced by an unannounced alternative voice.

OCR and generated explanations are different routes
Suniye also has a separate Gemma route for simpler Hindi explanations and descriptions of pictures where OCR finds no text. The author says Gemma is not allowed to invent image text when OCR misses it. Even so, generated explanations are experimental: Kumar reports cases where a model changed dates, substituted “submit” for “attach,” or added context. The original text remains visible; a quantity-and-negation guard caught some errors but missed others.
What has—and has not—been checked
Kumar reports bounded emulator checks on Android 11 and Android 15. The parent-focused revision passed internal layout and bundled-audio assertions at 160% font scaling. A System UI dialog covered the capture flow, and later system crashes prevented the complete touch walkthrough. The check remains open, and the author says he has not observed his parents using the app on their Redmi A4 phones.

Other checks were narrower. A deliberately delayed-response test found that a stopped reading did not restart. A voice-only Android 15 check covered cached replay, Slow, Stop, missing or corrupt audio, wrong-provider audio, and late replies. Host audio was disabled, so that check evaluated media state rather than listening quality.
The reported timings and file size are individual project observations, not general performance measures: Kumar reports one local Gemma response in 2.66 seconds, and a separate local call in 32.64 seconds, including 24.96 seconds loading and 2.73 seconds generating. One hosted voice-only check used 27,420 bytes of Raju audio. These figures do not establish typical speed, audio quality, or performance on a family’s phone.

What families should verify before relying on it
The post’s most important open question is whether each parent can complete the flow without help: open a WhatsApp message or paper label, start reading, then stop and replay. That intended-user check has not yet been observed. Until it is, the emulator results cannot establish that the app is ready for independent use by older adults.
For anything where an error could matter, a family member should check the visible original rather than rely on speech or a generated explanation alone. Kumar specifically flags amounts, dates, and medicine labels. For a photographed amount, the app reportedly converts ₹1,250 into Hindi speech wording while keeping the original visible with a separate amount hint; dates retain their written field order. Those features do not remove the need to confirm the source.
