The “sudo: command not found” message means your shell cannot locate the sudo executable. It does not, by itself, mean your account lacks permission. First check whether sudo is installed and whether its location is in your shell’s PATH. If it is missing, an authorized administrator must install it; access to the command and permission to use it are separate issues.

Check whether sudo is missing or just outside PATH

Run these read-only checks before changing the system:

cat /etc/os-release
command -v sudo
printf '%sn' "$PATH"
ls -l /usr/bin/sudo
  • cat /etc/os-release identifies the distribution, which determines the correct package manager and instructions.
  • If command -v sudo prints a path, the shell can locate the command; the problem may be a different error than “command not found.”
  • If /usr/bin/sudo exists but command -v sudo prints nothing, inspect the shell’s PATH and configuration. Reinstalling is not the first fix.
  • If the executable is absent, the package may not be installed. Some Linux installations omit it; Debian notes that installation state can depend on whether a root password was set during setup. Debian’s sudo guidance explains this distinction.

Install sudo using an authorized administrator account

Installing a package requires root access or another authorized administrative route. Do not try to bypass access controls. If you do not have authorized root access, contact the system administrator or use the recovery procedure approved for that machine.

If sudo is absent and you know the root password, switch to a root login shell and install the package:

su --login
apt install sudo

Debian documents this route in its sudo instructions. If the root password is unavailable, an unprivileged account cannot use these commands to grant itself administrator access; use an authorized recovery or administrator route for that installation.

Arch Linux

Install the sudo package while logged in as root or through an already authorized administrative path. Arch’s package instructions and configuration guidance are in the ArchWiki sudo entry. Do not assume Debian’s apt command applies to Arch.

Ubuntu

Ubuntu documents that membership in the sudo group grants administrative command privileges. If the command is missing, package installation still requires authorized administrative access; the Ubuntu page covers terminal use and group permissions, not a universal recovery procedure for every installation. See Ubuntu Server’s terminal tutorial.

Other distributions, containers, and managed systems

Package managers, administrative groups, and recovery methods vary. Identify the distribution from /etc/os-release and follow its official documentation. Minimal images may intentionally omit sudo, and managed machines may restrict package installation or privilege changes.

Grant permission to use sudo separately

Installing the executable does not automatically authorize every user to run commands through it. On Debian, an authorized root user can add the intended account to the sudo group, replacing USER with the actual account name:

adduser USER sudo

After changing group membership, completely log out and sign back in so the new login session receives the updated groups. Debian describes this requirement in its sudo documentation. Ubuntu also identifies its sudo group as a grant of administrative command privileges; group names and policy differ across distributions.

If sudo exists but your account is denied

An error saying that a user is not allowed to run a command is different from “command not found”: the shell found sudo, but the account’s permissions or sudoers policy do not authorize the requested operation. Check the distribution’s intended administrative group and policy with an authorized administrator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When changing sudoers policy, use visudo rather than editing /etc/sudoers directly. It checks the configuration before saving; a malformed policy can prevent sudo from working. Follow the distribution-specific guidance in the ArchWiki sudo entry. Avoid using chmod as a generic fix or making unvalidated permission changes.
