Succinct SP1 is an open-source zero-knowledge virtual machine (zkVM) for proving the execution of programs compiled for RISC-V. Its Rust-friendly workflow centers on writing a program, generating a proof, and—if needed—producing an EVM-compatible Groth16 or PLONK proof for on-chain verification. The right setup depends on which proof you need and whether you plan to prove locally or use the distributed Succinct Prover Network.

What Succinct SP1 does

SP1 lets developers prove that a program compiled for the RISC-V instruction set ran as claimed, without requiring a verifier to rerun the full computation. The SP1 project presents Rust as its main developer entry point and also supports programs written in languages that compile through LLVM. It is software, not a physical product.

The SP1 repository identifies Plonky3 as the toolkit powering its prover and describes an extensible precompile system. Those are implementation details, not evidence by themselves of a performance advantage over other proving systems.

How to start an SP1 project

Use Succinct’s live SP1 book installation guide and getting-started section alongside the official SP1 repository. Setup instructions and releases can change; the available official project information does not establish a specific latest release number, so choose version-specific commands from the live guide rather than relying on an unverified command here.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Install the prerequisites. Follow the installation guide for the supported toolchain and environment requirements for the version you intend to use.
  2. Start from the official project template. The template demonstrates the core program-and-proof flow and includes examples for additional proof-generation workflows.
  3. Build and run the example. Use the template’s instructions to compile the program for SP1 and generate a proof. Check its expected inputs and outputs before substituting your own program.
  4. Choose how the proof will be used. Keep the core proof flow if it meets your application’s needs. If you need an EVM-compatible proof, follow the template’s Groth16 or PLONK path and retrieve the verification key for the intended on-chain verification flow.
  5. Decide where proving should run. Try local proving for a small development example; consider the Prover Network for non-trivial programs or benchmarking, as the template recommends.

Because the installation guide and repository are mutable, confirm their current prerequisites, commands, and release information before setting up a production environment.

Choose a proof workflow

The template distinguishes the core SP1 proof flow from generation of EVM-compatible Groth16 or PLONK proofs. These are related but not interchangeable steps: select based on what the verifier or application needs.

Workflow When it fits What to account for
Core SP1 proof Developing the program and proving its execution in the SP1 workflow. Start with the official project template and confirm what proof format your verifier expects.
Groth16 or PLONK proof When the application needs the EVM-compatible proof-generation path demonstrated in the template, including its on-chain verification example. The template states that generating these proofs requires at least 16 GB of RAM. That minimum applies to these listed proof-generation workflows; it is not a universal memory requirement for every SP1 task.
Succinct Prover Network When you want distributed proving, especially for non-trivial programs or benchmarking, which the template recommends as a network use case. Confirm current access requirements, supported workflows, and costs before adopting the service; the available sources do not establish current terms.

When to use the Succinct Prover Network

The Prover Network repository describes an Ethereum protocol that coordinates distributed provers. It includes protocol contracts, a verifiable application, and a reference prover. That makes it a distinct deployment choice from running a proof locally: the network supplies distributed proving infrastructure, while local proving keeps execution within your own environment.

Compare the options against your actual verification target, required proof system, available memory and compute, and whether distributed proving benefits your workload. The SP1 template’s recommendation to use the network for non-trivial programs or benchmarking is guidance for evaluating that option, not a guarantee of lower cost or faster proofs for every program.

What the SP1 V4 Turbo paper adds

Succinct’s December 2024 SP1 V4 Turbo paper, by Gyumin Roh and Ron Rothblum, describes an elliptic-curve-based multiset-hashing memory consistency argument. This is a technical design description. It should not be treated as a benchmark or as proof of a general performance improvement for every workload.

How to read the network’s launch figures

In its August 5, 2025 mainnet launch post, Succinct Foundation reported support for “over 35 leading protocols,” “1,700 unique programs,” “over $4 billion in value” secured, and “more than five million proofs” fulfilled. These are publisher-reported figures tied to that launch announcement, not independently audited measurements or current network totals.
