What subedit does
The repository describes the project as a “Command-line subtitle editor written in BASH.” Its operations focus on processing subtitle files rather than providing a graphical editing workspace.
- Timing: shift subtitle times, adjust endpoints with proportional timing changes, synchronize subtitles against a file or matching-name files in a directory, and convert between NTSC and PAL frame rates. Documented example rates include 23.976, 25, and 29.970 frames per second.
- Text cleanup: search and replace text with case-sensitive or case-insensitive matching, clean whitespace, adjust punctuation and capitalization, and remove zero-duration cues. Removal keywords can be configured in
subeditrc. - Subtitle maintenance: fix common OCR and timing problems, sort cues, join or split SRT files, and remove text used for hearing-impaired cues.
- Format conversion: convert between SRT and MicroDVD SUB; the README also describes directory processing for SRT and SUB files.
The README says its -m option fixes common issues such as OCR character confusions, invalid or overlapping times, excessively long durations, and cues with too many lines or excessive line length.
Where it runs and what formats it handles
The project names Linux, Cygwin, and the Bash shell on Windows 10 as supported environments. That is the repository’s stated platform list; it does not establish support for other operating systems or Windows configurations.

SRT is the main documented format. Some functions also handle MicroDVD SUB, including conversion between the two. Do not assume every operation accepts both formats: check the command’s help for the specific option and input type.
How to process files and directories
The README documents -i for selecting an input subtitle file and -d for selecting a directory. Add -r with directory mode to search recursively. Wildcards and paths are also supported, and multiple parameters can be chained in a single command.

To preserve a copy before changing a file, use -b to create a .bak file beside the input. The README notes that if a backup already exists, it is left in place; do not rely on this option to refresh an older backup.
The repository advertises comprehensive help with more than 70 examples. Because command syntax and project details can change, consult the current README and help output before applying an operation to important subtitle files. The repository documents these capabilities, but they have not been independently tested here.

Is subedit the right tool?
Consider subedit if your work involves repeatable command-line operations on SRT files, such as shifting times across a batch, cleaning text, converting formats, or sorting and splitting files. Directory processing and chained parameters are useful when the same kind of operation must be applied to multiple files.
A command-line script may be a poor fit if you need to edit subtitle timing visually or if your files require formats or workflows not listed in its documentation. Before choosing a tool, check format coverage, the exact batch operations you need, supported runtime, synchronization method, and whether you want a command-line interface.
