If your stylus skips, wobbles, or draws wavy lines, first find out whether the cause is the app, the pen tip, an accessory, palm input, or the device itself. Try these six checks in order, changing one thing at a time. Calibration and accessory guidance varies by model, so use the instructions for your exact tablet and stylus.
1. Check whether the problem is limited to one app
Draw several strokes in a second writing or drawing app. If the lines behave normally there, inspect the affected app’s canvas display or zoom, brush smoothing, and input settings before changing device-wide options.
Pixelated or jagged edges are different from a physically wavy stroke. Clip Studio says that lines can look coarse when the displayed size is below 100%; that display-size explanation does not establish the cause of skipping or digitizer jitter. Clip Studio Support: Lines appear messy, rough, or jaggy.
2. Inspect the stylus tip and screen
Check that the tip is seated properly, clean, and not visibly worn. Clean the screen according to the device maker’s guidance. A damaged or worn tip can affect the line; Huawei recommends replacing a worn stylus tip. Choose a compatible replacement nib for the exact pen model rather than assuming that a generic tip will fit or work correctly. Huawei Support: Overview of the calibration feature on HUAWEI styluses.

Some screens may also fail to detect a tip that is too small for that screen type. HP’s stylus troubleshooting identifies this as one possible reason for skipping, not a universal diagnosis. HP Support: HP PCs – Touch screen stylus pen is inaccurate or stops working.
3. Test the screen protector and case
If your device maker recommends it, compare the result with the screen protector removed. Remove a case with magnetic clasps or closures for a separate test. Change one accessory at a time so you can tell which, if any, affects input.

These checks are device-specific: Samsung warns that protectors can cause inconsistent S Pen motion or pressure and that magnetic cases can interfere with recognition. Huawei also notes that film may affect straightness on the MatePad models covered by its guidance. This does not mean every protector or case causes wavy strokes. If stray marks appear when your hand touches the screen, or a stroke breaks as your palm lands, try drawing with your palm lifted. If your device provides a supported pen-only or palm-rejection setting, test it as well.

On Windows, built-in palm rejection works most effectively when the pen is detected in range before the palm reaches the digitizer. Wacom’s advice about the Cintiq 27QHD touch display is product-specific: it says the hand and pen tip should arrive at nearly the same time to avoid the software interpreting the palm as touch. Follow the instructions for your own device rather than applying either behavior universally. Microsoft Learn: Windows Pen States; Wacom Support: Cintiq 27QHD touch and hand input.
5. Update drivers and calibrate only with model-specific instructions
Check the manufacturer’s support page for updates to the device, stylus, firmware, or driver. If pen or touch input maps to the wrong display, use the manufacturer’s documented mapping or calibration procedure for that setup. Wacom’s Windows guidance addresses driver installation and mapping input to the correct screen; that is a distinct issue from a line that simply looks wavy. Huawei MatePad calibration is not a universal procedure
Huawei documents a calibration method for a listed set of MatePad models, including specific MatePad 11-inch 2023, MatePad Pro 2022, MatePad 12 X, MatePad Air, and MatePad Pro 13.2-inch models. The supported list may change, so confirm your model is covered before proceeding. Huawei’s instructions say to update the device, avoid charging during calibration, keep the calibration area at least 2 cm from the screen edge, hold the stylus perpendicular, avoid touching the tablet, and draw clockwise circles for at least three seconds. 6. Escalate if the same distortion persists
Retest with a compatible stylus, in more than one app, and without optional accessories when the manufacturer recommends removing them. If the same area or stroke pattern remains distorted, contact the device maker for diagnosis. Persistent wobble does not by itself prove that the digitizer has failed.

When you contact support, provide the tablet and pen models, operating-system and driver versions, the affected app, whether the issue occurs in other apps, and which checks you tried. This helps support distinguish a pen, accessory, app, mapping, or device problem.
