Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Its register-based API separates foreground colors, background colors, effects, and resets, while allowing developers to customize styles and rendering rules. The project documents standard terminal colors, 8-bit colors, 24-bit RGB, and effects such as bold, italic, and underline.
What is sty for Python?
sty is a library for styling terminal output in Python, not a terminal application. Its maintainers describe it as customizable string-styling markup designed to stay separate from both the color palette and the terminal implementation. In practice, you combine a style register with text and print the resulting string.
The project’s examples use four registers: fg for foreground color, bg for background color, ef for effects, and rs for resets. This separates the style markup in application code from how a renderer turns that markup into terminal output. See the official sty repository and README for the documented API and examples.
What can you style with sty?
The README demonstrates named foreground and background colors, italic text, 8-bit color selection, and 24-bit RGB selection. It also documents effects including bold and underline.

| Styling option | Documented example or capability |

| Named colors | Named foreground and background colors |
| 8-bit color | fg(201) |
| 24-bit RGB color | fg(255, 10, 10) |
| Text effects | Bold, italic, and underline |
These examples show the syntax and range described by the project; they do not guarantee that every terminal displays every color or effect identically.
How does sty’s register-based API work?
Registers provide the markup developers use in code. Foreground, background, effects, and reset handling have distinct roles, so style selection can be expressed without embedding terminal escape-code details directly into each application string. The README’s examples include combining a selected style with text and emitting the resulting string to the terminal.

sty also provides default palettes and renderers. The maintainers say those can be replaced or customized without changing the markup in application code. For a custom color, the README demonstrates defining a Style and a renderer rule. This can be useful when an application needs a consistent palette or project-specific style names rather than only the defaults.
Does sty work on Windows and Unix terminals?
The project documentation claims that sty should work on most Unix platforms with most terminals and on recent Windows terminals. It specifically says legacy Windows Command Prompt (cmd) requires a shim. These are maintainer compatibility statements, not independently reproduced tests, so check your target terminal and environment rather than assuming every combination behaves the same.
The repository states an intent to support Python 3.7 and later for as long as possible. It also describes the library as fully typed, dependency-free, compliant with semantic versioning, and designed to avoid implicitly changing globals such as sys.stdout. These are claims in the project documentation.
Which sty release is shown, and is it actively maintained?
The latest release entry shown in the inspected repository information is version 1.0.6, dated November 27, 2023. The PyPI page inspected is for an older beta and points to 1.0.6 as a newer version; it is not current installation guidance. Those release details do not establish whether the project is actively maintained today. Check the repository for current release and project activity before adopting it.
Quick Recap
Best Value
What to consider before choosing sty
- Terminal support: Confirm the color depth and effects your target terminals support, especially if you need legacy Windows
cmd. - Customization: Consider whether the register, palette, and renderer model fits the way your application organizes styles.
- Project status: Review the repository’s latest release and activity; the available release entry alone does not confirm current maintenance.
- Performance evidence: The repository makes an unquantified claim about access performance for styling rules, but the inspected material provides no benchmark figure. Treat it as a project claim, not a measured comparison.
