Graphite is a customizable GTK theme for Linux desktops, installed from the project’s Git repository with an install.sh script. It offers named color variants, light and dark modes, standard or compact sizing, and optional GNOME Shell, GDM and libadwaita-related tweaks. The important limitation is compatibility: Graphite’s GTK3 styling should not be assumed to control GTK4 or libadwaita applications, and reports from GNOME Shell 50.1 environments in 2026 describe missing or inconsistent styling.

What Graphite provides

The upstream project documents Graphite as a GTK theme with a broad set of appearance choices. You can select a base color, switch between light and dark variants, and choose standard or compact sizing. Optional tweaks cover shell and login-screen integration as well as visual details such as darker or black surfaces, rimless controls, floating elements and colorful accents.

Category Documented choices
Color Default, purple, pink, red, orange, yellow, green, teal and blue
Color mode Standard, light or dark
Density Standard or compact
Additional tweaks Nord, Dracula, Ferra, black, darker, rimless, normal, float and colorful
Desktop integration Optional GNOME Shell and GDM styling

Graphite’s repository also names Tela-circle-icon-theme and Graphite Wallpapers as companion digital assets. They are separate projects or downloads, not requirements for the GTK theme itself.

GTK3, GTK4 and libadwaita are not interchangeable

GNOME describes GTK as the user-interface toolkit and libadwaita as a library that supplies GNOME design-pattern widgets and classes. A theme written for GTK3 can therefore work in GTK3 applications without automatically controlling GTK4 or libadwaita applications.

In a January 2024 GNOME Discourse explanation, Emmanuele Bassi noted that GTK4 changed selectors and removed deprecated CSS properties. Libadwaita applications also limit system-theme customization. This is why a Graphite installation may visibly change some older applications while Nautilus or another libadwaita app remains close to its default appearance.

What the --libadwaita option actually means

Graphite’s README documents a --libadwaita installer switch that installs a link to GTK4 configuration for libadwaita theming. Treat that as an integration attempt, not a universal compatibility promise. Whether it works depends on the application, GTK/libadwaita versions, GNOME release and distribution packaging.

Two 2026 reports illustrate the uncertainty. Issue #222, opened May 29, 2026, describes Graphite not applying to GTK4/libadwaita applications such as Nautilus on Ubuntu with GNOME Shell 50.1. Issue #224, opened June 13, 2026, describes inconsistent light/dark styling, CSS parser errors and self-referencing symlinks in a NixOS 26.11 unstable setup using GNOME Shell 50.1. These are environment-specific user reports; they neither prove that every GNOME 50.1 system fails nor document a confirmed upstream fix.

Requirements before installing

The project README lists GTK 3.20 or later, a standard GNOME theme package (gnome-themes-extra or gnome-themes-standard), the Murrine engine package appropriate to your distribution and sassc as build dependencies. Package names vary, so use your distribution’s package manager and verify the current README before running commands.

Because installer switches and dependency instructions can change, use the current upstream documentation at github.com/vinceliuice/Graphite-gtk-theme as the authoritative command reference.

Install Graphite from the upstream project

  1. Check versions and dependencies. Confirm your desktop is GNOME, identify whether the applications you want to restyle use GTK3 or GTK4/libadwaita, and install the README’s prerequisites, including GTK 3.20+, a GNOME theme package, Murrine and sassc.
  2. Get the repository. Clone or download the project from the upstream Graphite repository, then change into the checked-out directory.
  3. Run the installer. Execute ./install.sh. Select the documented color, mode and size options you want; the README also documents destination selection, GDM styling, removal or installation of the libadwaita link, and uninstallation.
  4. Apply the theme. Use GNOME’s appearance controls or a compatible GNOME tweaking utility to select the installed Graphite GTK and Shell theme components. Log out and back in if Shell changes do not appear immediately.
  5. Test representative applications. Check one GTK3 program and one GTK4/libadwaita program separately. A successful GTK3 result does not establish GTK4 support.

Choosing a Graphite configuration

Your priority Starting choice Trade-off to check
Maximum readability and familiar spacing Standard size with standard or light mode Uses more screen space than compact mode
Dark desktop Dark mode, optionally darker or black Some applications may not follow the same palette
More content on small displays Compact size Smaller controls can be less comfortable to use
Accent experimentation One of the named colors or Nord/Dracula/Ferra tweaks Accent consistency depends on each application’s toolkit
Whole-desktop integration Enable Shell and, if needed, GDM options Login-screen changes affect system-wide presentation and may require elevated installation steps

Troubleshoot GTK4 or libadwaita applications

GTK3 changed, GTK4 did not

First identify the toolkit used by the unchanged application. If GTK3 programs change but a GTK4/libadwaita program does not, that behavior is consistent with the separate toolkit rules and libadwaita’s restricted customization model. Confirm that the installer’s libadwaita-link option was used according to the current README, then retest after restarting the application.

Light and dark modes conflict

Check GNOME’s selected appearance mode, Graphite’s installed variant and any per-application preference. On GNOME Shell 50.1, issue #224 reports inconsistent mode handling alongside CSS parser errors, so inspect that issue for environment-specific developments before repeatedly reinstalling.

CSS parser errors appear

Do not assume a parser error is caused by your color choice. GTK4 changed CSS selectors and removed deprecated properties; a theme authored for another toolkit generation can expose those incompatibilities. Record your GNOME, GTK, libadwaita and distribution versions, reproduce the error in a single application, and compare it with the current upstream issue tracker.

A symlink loops or points to itself

Issue #224 reports self-referencing symlinks on NixOS 26.11 unstable with GNOME Shell 50.1. Stop and inspect the link rather than creating additional links manually. Remove the Graphite installation using the project’s documented uninstall procedure, then reinstall only after confirming the current instructions for your distribution.

Use the uninstall option documented by the upstream script. If you enabled a libadwaita link or GDM styling, remove those through the corresponding installer options instead of deleting arbitrary files from system theme directories.

How to judge compatibility before committing

  • Record the exact GNOME Shell release, distribution and package versions.
  • Classify each target application as GTK3, GTK4 or GTK4/libadwaita.
  • Read current Graphite issues for your release, especially if you run GNOME Shell 50.1.
  • Test in a reversible user-level installation where possible.
  • Keep the default GNOME theme available so you can switch back if Shell, GDM or applications render incorrectly.

For background on the toolkit split, see GNOME’s Libraries overview and the GTK3-to-GTK4 discussion on GNOME Discourse.

The Bottom Line

Graphite is a strong choice for customizing GTK-based GNOME desktops, especially GTK3 applications, with extensive color and density options. Install it from the current upstream README, but evaluate GTK4 and libadwaita support on your own GNOME and distribution versions rather than treating the --libadwaita option as a guarantee.
