Linux is the only operating system the project currently lists as supported; macOS and Windows are described as untested. The features below are documented by the project, not independently tested for this overview.
What studyFlash does
The studyFlash project describes the software as a Python application for learning language flashcards inside a terminal. Instead of requiring users to build a deck in a graphical app, its documented workflow centers on a card file that users can create and edit as text. That makes the deck itself straightforward to inspect and revise outside the study session.
The project README documents studying cards in the terminal and changing how a session works. It lists shuffling, reversing the question-and-answer direction, setting a condition for marking cards mastered, and resetting statistics. The README also documents Quizlet-link importing and CSV import and export. These are described capabilities, not a guarantee that every import source or file will work without adjustment.
How the file-based workflow works
- Create a flashcard file. Start with a file for the deck, following the format and instructions in the studyFlash README.
- Add questions and solutions. Enter the language prompts and their corresponding answers in the file.
- Edit cards in a text editor. The documented workflow lets users change card content directly, rather than only through a deck-building interface.
- Study in the terminal. Run studyFlash according to the README’s current usage instructions, then use its documented study options, such as shuffling or reversing the direction.
- Bring in or take out cards as needed. The README documents CSV import/export and an importer for Quizlet links; consult its instructions for supported formats and details.
Linux support and installation
The README states: “Linux is the only supported operating system at the moment. It may work on macOS or Windows but I never tested it.” In other words, possible operation on those platforms is not the same as project-supported compatibility. If you rely on macOS or Windows, treat installation and behavior as uncertain rather than assuming the Linux instructions will transfer.

The project README documents installation by cloning the Git repository and installing through pip. It also documents an Arch Linux User Repository route, including yay -S studyflash. Installation guidance can change, so check the official repository README for the current commands and prerequisites before installing.
Who may find studyFlash useful
studyFlash may suit language learners who are comfortable using a terminal and want to keep their cards in editable files. Its documented import/export options may also be useful if a learner wants to move card data through CSV or bring in material from a Quizlet link. The README lists a configurable mastery condition and statistics, but the available evidence does not establish measured learning outcomes or show that the program uses a particular research-backed scheduling method.

It is less clearly suited to someone who needs a supported macOS or Windows app, prefers to create cards entirely through a graphical interface, or is looking for verified comparisons with other flashcard platforms. The sources establish the project’s terminal and file-oriented approach, but not a full feature-by-feature comparison with alternatives.
