For SaaS production systems, prefer structured logs with a stable schema when teams need reliable field-level search, filtering, request correlation, or automated analysis. JSON is a common way to encode those records, but JSON alone does not make logs meaningfully structured: fields must keep consistent names, types, and meanings. Plain text can still suit local development or a legacy pipeline that parses it reliably.
What “structured” means—and why JSON is not enough
A structured log has consistently defined fields or a schema; JSON is one possible encoding, not the definition of structure. OpenTelemetry distinguishes a log’s data model from how it is represented, and allows a log body to be a readable string or structured values. A stream of valid JSON is still hard to analyze if one service writes request_id, another writes requestId, or the same field changes type between events. For a SaaS team, the useful distinction is whether a record’s meaning survives the journey from application to collector, storage, and search—not whether the line has braces around it.
How structured and plain-text logs compare

For example, Google Cloud Logging says structured payloads support queries on specific JSON paths and indexing of specific fields. Its textPayload can be searched as text, but its contents cannot be indexed like structured fields. These are Google Cloud behaviors, not a guarantee that every backend treats the formats identically. See Google Cloud’s structured logging documentation and log entry data model.

What a useful SaaS log record should contain
Start with a small set of fields whose meanings are clear across services. OpenTelemetry’s log model includes timestamps, severity, resource context, attributes, and optional trace and span IDs. AWS also recommends transaction and correlation identifiers across components. Adapt the names to your conventions, but keep the semantics and types stable.
- Time and severity: Use a consistent timestamp representation and severity mapping so records sort and filter correctly.
- Service and environment: Identify the emitting service and deployment context, such as environment or resource identity.
- Event or message: Include a concise human-readable description where helpful, alongside searchable fields rather than instead of them.
- Request and trace context: Include request, trace, or span identifiers when available and propagate them across relevant components.
- Event-specific attributes: Put variable details in explicit attributes or nested objects. Avoid changing a field from a string to an object in different code paths.
OpenTelemetry’s logging specification describes how existing logging sources can map into its model, while the data model supports both a readable body and structured values.

When plain text is still a reasonable choice
Plain text is a sensible option when people primarily read output locally, when a mature collector parses the format consistently, or when a legacy system cannot yet accept structured records. It is also possible to give developers readable console output while emitting machine-readable records in production. The important condition is that the production pipeline can preserve the event’s fields and meaning.
Do not rely on a human-readable sentence as the only home for data that operators need to query—such as severity, service identity, or a request identifier. If those values only appear in free-form text, searches and correlations tend to depend on message wording.

Choose a format for the whole logging pipeline
The application formatter is only one part of the decision. Confirm that your collector parses the output and that the backend retains severity, timestamps, nested values, and correlation fields as intended. Google Cloud documents emitting JSON to standard output for collection, using a logging client or API, and using an agent where available. OpenTelemetry can also help normalize existing logging libraries and sources into a common data model.
For AWS serverless applications, AWS recommends centralized, structured logging and correlation identifiers. AWS Lambda also offers JSON and plain-text log format configuration, but its behavior and compatibility details are specific to Lambda. How to introduce structured logging safely
- Define a small schema. Agree on names and types for time, severity, service or resource, environment, event or message, and available request or trace identifiers. Document what each field means.
- Update emitters and formatters. Ensure application code supplies the agreed fields consistently. If developers need readable terminal output, use a development formatter without changing the underlying event semantics.
- Test representative events end to end. Send ordinary events and exceptions through collection, parsing, storage, search, dashboards, and alerts. Check escaping, multiline stack traces, nested values, timestamp handling, severity mapping, and identifier propagation.
- Check platform-specific integrations. Verify metric extraction and other backend conventions before switching formats. AWS Lambda, for example, warns that embedded-metric compatibility can be affected in some configurations; that caveat should not be assumed to apply identically to other stacks.
- Roll out and monitor the change. Confirm that new events remain queryable and that downstream alerts and dashboards still work. A format migration may affect only newly emitted records on some platforms, so verify the platform’s behavior rather than assuming historical logs will be rewritten.
Protect privacy and control volume
Explicit fields make useful data easier to query, but they can also make sensitive data easier to expose. AWS advises removing, masking, sanitizing, hashing, or encrypting sensitive values as appropriate. Avoid logging passwords, access tokens, session IDs, connection strings, encryption keys, sensitive personal information, and payment data. Apply data minimization before records leave the application, and restrict who can query or export logs. See AWS logging best practices.
Set useful log levels and consider sampling noisy debug events as volume grows. Neither JSON nor plain text is inherently cheaper or faster in every stack; ingestion, indexing, retention, and query behavior depend on the collector and backend configuration.
