Use Streamlabs Desktop if you stream from a Windows or Mac computer and want broad control over scenes, sources, audio, recording, and desktop capture. Choose Streamlabs Console if you play on Xbox and want to configure a Streamlabs broadcast in a browser without a separate streaming PC or capture card. Console is the simpler Xbox route, but its microphone and destination options are narrower.
What is the difference?
Desktop is an application for Windows and Mac that runs on a computer. You assemble a stream from sources such as a game, desktop, camera, and microphone, then arrange them into scenes. It also supports overlays, alerts, widgets, chat, recording, and audio filters. Streamlabs describes Desktop as free to download and use, with some premium features requiring Ultra. Streamlabs’ comparison lists Twitch, YouTube, and Kick chat integration; check Streamlabs’ current plan and destination information before relying on a particular feature.
Console is a browser-configured service for streaming from Xbox. Its documented workflow uses the Twitch app on Xbox to select Streamlabs as the destination. It offers scenes and selected engagement features, but it is not the same broad computer-based production setup as Desktop. Streamlabs’ Console FAQ says Console supports Xbox, not PlayStation or Switch.
| Question | Streamlabs Desktop | Streamlabs Console |
|---|---|---|
| Where does it run? | Windows or Mac computer | Configured in a browser and used with Xbox |
| What does it capture? | Game, desktop, camera, microphone, and other computer sources | Xbox gameplay through the Console workflow |
| How much production control? | Scenes, sources, overlays, alerts, widgets, chat, recording, and audio filters | Scenes, overlays, alerts, and selected widgets; narrower production workflow |
| Separate PC or capture card? | A PC is required; console gameplay capture into Desktop may require a capture card | Neither is required for its Xbox workflow |
| Microphone and camera | Select computer-connected devices as sources | Controller-connected headset microphone; optional Xbox USB webcam or phone webcam |
Which one should you use?
Choose Desktop for a PC-centered stream
- You play or create content on a computer and need to capture the desktop or multiple sources.
- You want more control over scenes, audio processing, recording, and the arrangement of overlays and alerts.
- You want to stream console gameplay through a computer workflow and accept the cost and setup of a capture device.
Choose Console for Xbox without a streaming PC
- You play on Xbox and want Streamlabs scenes and engagement features without adding a PC and capture card.
- You are comfortable using a headset microphone connected to the controller rather than a separate external microphone.
- The documented destination workflow suits you: Twitch is required for the cited multistream setup, with other services added as destinations rather than used by themselves.
Consider native console broadcasting for the simplest setup
Streamlabs’ console streaming guide characterizes native console apps as easy and cost-effective, but with limited customization and without Streamlabs alerts or overlays. This can be a reasonable choice when avoiding both a subscription and extra hardware matters more than production features.

Do you need a PC or capture card?
For the documented Streamlabs Console workflow on Xbox, no separate streaming PC or capture card is required. You configure the service in a browser and select Streamlabs in the Xbox Twitch app. Streamlabs’ FAQ states: “No, with Streamlabs Console, a PC or capture card is no longer required to create a high-quality live stream.”
Desktop does require a computer. If you want to bring Xbox gameplay into Desktop, Streamlabs documents a console-to-PC capture-card route. The card sits between the console and computer so Desktop can receive the gameplay as a source. That adds hardware, connections, and setup; it is unnecessary if Console meets your needs. Streamlabs’ older guide names Elgato and AVerMedia examples, but those examples are not a current model recommendation. Check a specific card’s compatibility with your console, computer, ports, resolution, and frame rate before buying.
Microphones, cameras, scenes, and widgets
Desktop is the more flexible choice when your setup depends on a particular camera or microphone connected to a computer: those devices can be selected as sources alongside gameplay and other inputs.

For Console, Streamlabs’ FAQ documents a headset microphone plugged into the Xbox controller and says a separate external microphone is not supported. A webcam is optional: the FAQ describes connecting a USB webcam to Xbox or using a mobile device as a webcam. It also lists Chat Box, Event List, and Stream Labels among available widgets and says multiple scenes are supported. Confirm compatibility for your actual devices before building a setup around them.
Streaming destinations: an important Console caveat
Streamlabs’ Console FAQ presents the service as Twitch-focused, while its Xbox multistream guide describes Twitch alongside YouTube, TikTok, and Kick. Read these together narrowly: the guide’s multistream workflow requires Twitch and permits the other destinations as additions. The cited material does not establish that Console can send a stream to YouTube, TikTok, or Kick on its own. Desktop’s comparison lists Twitch, YouTube, and Kick chat integration, but destination availability and plan packaging can change; verify current terms for your intended platform.
Plans, trial, and system requirements
Streamlabs’ comparison says Desktop is free to download and use, while multistreaming, Stream Shift, premium overlays, and the creator-tools suite require Ultra. Free-feature limits and packaging may change, so check the current Streamlabs plan terms before subscribing.

The Console FAQ published September 5, 2025 lists a seven-day free trial and prices of $11 USD per month or $79.99 USD per year; it also says Console is included with Streamlabs Ultra. These are the FAQ’s published terms, not a live checkout confirmation, so verify price, trial eligibility, and renewal details before starting.
Streamlabs’ system-requirements page lists Windows 10 or macOS 12 and 8 GB RAM as minimums, and recommends 16 GB or more RAM for demanding streams, animated overlays, or advanced plugins. Its displayed recommended operating-system information is internally inconsistent, and newer quick-start material differs. Treat these numbers as a starting point, not a definitive purchase specification; check the current requirements page and your intended setup.
Common decision problems
“I have a PlayStation or Switch.”
Do not choose Console on the assumption it supports your system: Streamlabs’ FAQ says PlayStation and Switch are unsupported. The available official material does not establish a current, complete PlayStation setup or equipment list. Check current console-native options or Streamlabs documentation for your exact device rather than applying the Xbox instructions.

“I want to use a standalone microphone with Console.”
The FAQ’s documented Console microphone route is a headset connected to the controller; it says a separate external microphone is not supported. Use a compatible headset for that workflow, or choose a PC-based setup if your production requires a different microphone path.
“I want to multistream without Twitch.”
The cited Console multistream guide requires Twitch. It does not establish that YouTube, TikTok, or Kick can be selected as the only destination in that workflow. Check current destination support before committing to Console for a Twitch-free broadcast.
“Desktop cannot see my console gameplay.”
Desktop is computer software, so it needs the gameplay signal as an available source. Streamlabs’ documented console-to-PC method uses a capture card. Check the card’s connections and compatibility with both devices; if you do not want that added equipment, Console’s Xbox workflow avoids it.
