You can send a live broadcast from Streamlabs Desktop to YouTube, but the setup alone does not make it a dependable unattended 24/7 service. YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive, and the official Streamlabs documentation cited here does not establish guaranteed nonstop uptime or automatic recovery after a computer, app, or network failure.
Use the steps below to configure and monitor a broadcast. If you need a channel to keep looping uploaded videos while your computer is off, see the cloud option after the desktop setup.
Before you start: confirm YouTube live access
Your YouTube channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. If this is the first time you enable live streaming, activation may take up to 24 hours. Check access before planning a long broadcast; see YouTube live streaming tips and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Its quick-start guide, dated May 20, 2026, lists minimum and recommended specifications; check the current guide rather than assuming any computer is suitable for a long-running session.

Set up a YouTube broadcast in Streamlabs Desktop
- Connect YouTube. Open Streamlabs Desktop and sign in with your YouTube account, or choose the stream URL/key method if that is how you are configuring the encoder. Streamlabs’ YouTube streaming guide covers connecting the account and adding sources.
- Build and check your scene. Add the sources you intend viewers to see and hear. For a static presentation or prerecorded video, confirm that the video and audio sources are actually in the scene and playing as intended. You are responsible for having the rights to use every video, song, and other material; setup instructions do not establish that a particular playlist is authorized.
- Create or select the stream in YouTube Studio. In Live Control Room, set the title, description, privacy, and other stream details. You can follow YouTube’s live stream settings guide for key and stream configuration.
- Protect the stream key if using one. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a broadcast to your channel. Find it using Streamlabs’ stream-key guide. Never show it on screen or share it publicly. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and replace the old key in the encoder settings.
- Enter the broadcast details and preview. In Streamlabs Desktop, select YouTube, enter the title and description if prompted, and check the preview. Streamlabs’ Getting Started guide describes its current onboarding flow, including platform selection and confirming Go Live.
- Start and verify the broadcast. Select Go Live when the preview and details are correct. Open the YouTube watch page to confirm the stream is visible, then monitor picture, sound, and connection health rather than assuming the broadcast remains healthy unattended.
Prepare the computer and connection for a long session
Keep the computer powered, prevent sleep or hibernation, and make sure Streamlabs Desktop can remain open. Use a stable internet connection and avoid relying on a Wi-Fi link that may drop or fluctuate during a long broadcast. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total streaming bitrate. For example, if your combined stream bitrate is 10 Mbps, plan for roughly 12 Mbps of available upload capacity; this is headroom, not a guarantee against interruptions. See YouTube streaming tips.
Preview before going live and watch the stream after it starts. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend checking stream quality and connection conditions. The reviewed guidance does not establish a Streamlabs Desktop setting that guarantees unattended restart or reconnection after a crash, power loss, update, or network interruption.

Plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit
YouTube says broadcasts shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a complete replay, do not count on one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast to produce it. YouTube recommends making a local recording as a backup. See Archive live streams.

| Approach | Replay consideration | Viewer continuity | Operational planning |
|---|---|---|---|
| One uninterrupted broadcast longer than 12 hours | YouTube warns it may not be captured as an archive. | It avoids planned breaks, but a failure can interrupt the broadcast. | Do not assume Streamlabs will recover unattended; consider local recording. |
| Separate broadcasts shorter than 12 hours | Streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but retention is not guaranteed for every case. | Viewers encounter a break when one event ends and another begins. | Someone or a separately verified setup must manage starts and monitor each event; local recording can provide another copy. |
YouTube’s archive guidance supports the duration caveat, but does not quantify viewer impact or certify the reliability of either operating approach. If uninterrupted playback and a dependable replay are both important, plan for local recording and verify each archived segment rather than relying on a single long stream.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
- You cannot start a live stream: Confirm channel verification and live-stream eligibility, including whether a restriction applies within the preceding 90 days. A first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube receives no signal: Check that Streamlabs is connected to the intended YouTube account and, if using a key, that the current key is entered. If the key was reset or exposed, update it in Streamlabs.
- Video appears but audio does not: Check that the scene includes the intended audio source, that it is active, and that its levels move in the Streamlabs mixer before going live.
- The stream becomes unstable or drops: Check the connection and available upload capacity; YouTube recommends about 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. The cited documentation does not establish a guaranteed unattended recovery mechanism in Streamlabs Desktop, so monitor the session and make a separate recovery plan.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: Check the broadcast duration. A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be archived; if a complete copy matters, keep a local recording and verify the resulting files.
