OBS is the cross-platform option; XSplit Broadcaster is for Windows; and Streamlabs publishes setup and troubleshooting guidance for capture-card sources. Compatibility still depends on the exact card, computer, operating system, connection, and video format—so check those details before choosing software.
Which streaming software works with a capture card?
| Software | Operating system | Capture-card support | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Windows, macOS, and Linux; check current system requirements | Capture cards can be added as sources to scenes. OBS also publishes a certified-device list, but it is not a guarantee for every model or setup. | Creators who want a free, open-source option and need to check platform compatibility. |
| XSplit Broadcaster | Windows only; its requirements page lists Windows 10/11 64-bit. | XSplit documents adding a capture card as a video device, including for a dual-PC setup. | Windows users who want a documented capture-card workflow, particularly on a streaming PC separate from the gaming PC. |
| Streamlabs Desktop | Check the current requirements for your computer before installing. | Streamlabs provides card setup and troubleshooting instructions, including device selection and conflicts. | Streamers who want its capture-card-specific setup and troubleshooting guidance. |

How to choose the right software and card
Start with the computer that will run the streaming software, then verify the complete video path. A card appearing in a software menu does not by itself establish that it can handle your intended resolution, frame rate, audio, or operating system.
- Operating system: OBS supports Windows, macOS, and Linux subject to current requirements. XSplit Broadcaster is Windows-only. Verify the current requirements for your OS and version before installing.
- Exact card model: Check the manufacturer’s current documentation and, for OBS, its certified-device list. Certification is a useful compatibility signal, not a blanket guarantee for every software and hardware combination.
- Source and ports: Match the source device’s output to the card’s input and the card’s connection to a port on the streaming computer. Supported connectors and formats vary by model.
- Resolution and frame rate: Confirm what the source, card, computer, and software support together. A card’s advertised capture format does not prove the entire setup can stream at that setting.
- Audio, passthrough, and latency: Check how the card carries audio and whether its passthrough and latency meet your needs. Follow the device manual for routing and configuration.
- Drivers and utilities: Use the card maker’s setup instructions. Software guidance may differ by device; do not assume every card uses the same driver or utility.
- Computer workload: Capture is only one part of streaming. Resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity affect system load. OBS cautions that meeting its basic requirements does not guarantee that a computer can stream or record successfully. See its system requirements.
For example, Elgato notes that using its 4K S with third-party software such as OBS, XSplit, or Streamlabs can have different requirements from using Elgato Studio. Check the exact model’s current specifications rather than treating compatibility with one application as proof of compatibility with another: Elgato downloads and support.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Add a capture card as a source
Before you open the streaming app
- Install the streaming application on the computer that will encode and broadcast the stream.
- Follow the capture-card manufacturer’s installation and driver instructions for that computer.
- Connect the source device’s video output to the card’s input, then connect the card to the streaming computer as described in its manual. Port types and supported formats vary by card.
In XSplit Broadcaster
- In XSplit Broadcaster, choose Add Source > Devices > Video.
- Select the capture card from the video-device list. XSplit documents this workflow in its dual-PC setup guide; install Broadcaster on the streaming PC in that workflow.
- Confirm that the intended picture appears, then check audio routing and stream settings for the card, computer, and network.
In OBS Studio
- Add a video-capture source to the scene in OBS and select the capture device. OBS identifies capture cards as supported scene sources on its feature page.
- Consult the current OBS guide and the card’s manual for the device’s available controls and supported formats; settings differ across models.
- Check video and audio in the preview before going live, then choose settings appropriate to the computer, card, and upload connection.
In Streamlabs Desktop
Add the capture card using Streamlabs’ capture-card setup guidance and follow any device-specific instructions it provides. Its troubleshooting material covers device selection, cards that do not appear, and conflicts when another application or active source is using the device: Streamlabs capture-card setup.
Troubleshoot a missing or unreliable capture-card source
| Symptom | Checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| The card does not appear in the software’s device list. | Check the connection, install or update the card maker’s required software or drivers, and confirm the device is supported by the operating system and application. Follow the exact model’s manual. |
| The device is listed but unavailable or shows no picture. | Close other applications that may be using the card and check whether another active scene or source already occupies it. Streamlabs specifically notes device conflicts as a possible cause. Recheck the source-to-card connection and supported input format. |
| Video works but audio is missing or routed incorrectly. | Check whether audio is carried through the card, how the card exposes it to the software, and which audio source is selected. Verify both the card manual and the streaming app’s audio controls. |
| The stream drops frames or the computer struggles. | Reduce workload or adjust resolution, frame rate, encoder, or scene complexity to fit the computer and capture format. Check the card, software, and network requirements; basic software requirements alone do not guarantee streaming performance. |
| The desired resolution or frame rate is unavailable. | Verify the source output, card input and capture limits, connection, drivers, and software settings as a chain. Do not assume one component’s advertised maximum applies to the whole setup. |
When the goal is a continuous YouTube stream
A capture card brings a live source—such as a console, camera, or second computer—into a streaming-software scene. That workflow is different from continuously playing uploaded videos as a live YouTube stream. For that specific use, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer does not have to stay on, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It streams to YouTube only, not from a camera.
