A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11There is no single minimum PC specification that guarantees a smooth live stream. The right setup depends on what you stream, your resolution and frame rate, how OBS encodes the video, and whether you are also gaming on the same computer. Treat compatibility as a starting point—not a performance guarantee—and test your complete setup before buying hardware.
What PC specs do you need to live stream?
Start with the workload, not a universal CPU or graphics-card checklist. A static presentation, a webcam stream, and a demanding game with animated overlays put very different loads on a PC. OBS says its system compatibility does not guarantee that a system can stream or record a particular workload, and that CPU needs vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Its system-requirements page is dated August 25, 2021, so verify current support for your hardware and OBS version before making a purchase. OBS system requirements.
- For a simple camera or presentation: prioritize stable encoding, adequate upload capacity, and a test with the scenes and sources you plan to use.
- For gaming and streaming on one PC: the game and OBS compete for system resources. Include the specific game, graphics settings, overlays, and target stream settings in your test.
- For high-resolution or high-frame-rate output: plan for increased encoding and network demands, then confirm performance under the real workload rather than relying on a component label alone.
The official guidance cited here does not establish a universal CPU model, core count, RAM capacity, or graphics-card tier for gaming and streaming together. A specific recommendation without a matching workload benchmark would overstate what a “minimum” can promise.
Is a CPU or GPU more important for streaming?
It depends on the encoding path and the workload. OBS supports x264 software encoding as well as hardware encoding paths including NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync, and Apple VideoToolbox. OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance because it shifts encoding work from the CPU to specialized hardware. Supported options and quality vary by platform, hardware generation, and driver, so check the current guidance for your exact device. OBS encoder guide.

CPU encoding with x264
x264 encodes on the CPU. That can be a useful option when it suits the computer and stream settings, but the CPU must also handle any other work—such as running a game—without losing performance. Test the intended game, scene, and output settings together.
Hardware encoding
A supported hardware encoder can reduce the CPU work of encoding. It does not eliminate graphics-card demands: OBS still has to compose and render scenes, and the game may also need substantial GPU capacity. OBS notes that older encoder generations may produce lower image quality at the same bitrate, so the mere presence of a hardware encoder does not mean every generation produces equivalent results.

Apple-specific note
OBS documents hardware streaming with H.264 on Apple Silicon. Its encoder guide says Intel Mac VideoToolbox streaming is not supported because of constant-bitrate limitations, and that x264 is required for streaming in that case. Check OBS’s current documentation for changes and device-specific compatibility.
Can your PC handle streaming and gaming at the same time?
Possibly, but the deciding factor is whether the game and OBS can both do their work reliably at your chosen settings. In addition to encoding, OBS needs GPU resources to render scenes. If a game uses all available GPU capacity, OBS can struggle to render frames on time—even if encoding itself is handled by a dedicated hardware encoder. OBS encoding performance troubleshooting.

- Test while playing the actual game, not on an idle desktop.
- Include the scenes, browser sources, alerts, webcam, and other overlays you expect to use.
- If OBS cannot render smoothly, reduce the game’s graphics load or close other GPU-heavy work, then test again.
- Compare 30 fps with 60 fps if performance is marginal; the higher frame rate can add workload and bitrate demand.
How do resolution and frame rate affect streaming?
Higher resolution and frame rate generally require more bitrate, and higher frame rates can increase system workload. Choose a target that fits your content, PC performance, and sustained upload capacity. OBS specifically cautions that streaming at 60 fps can be taxing compared with 30 fps. OBS streaming guide.
| Choice | Trade-off | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| 30 fps vs. 60 fps | Lower workload and bitrate needs vs. smoother motion at higher demand. | Consider 60 fps for fast-moving content only if your PC and connection sustain it in a real test. |
| 720p vs. 1080p or higher | Lower bitrate and workload vs. more image detail. | Match the resolution to the content, platform guidance, and available upload capacity. |
How much upload speed do you need for 1080p streaming?
Your internet connection is a separate constraint from PC performance. YouTube recommends running a speed test and publishes encoder bitrate ranges by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For 1080p60, its guidance lists H.264 at 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended; for AV1 or H.265/HEVC, it lists 4 Mbps minimum and 12 Mbps recommended. For 1080p30, YouTube lists H.264 at 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended, and AV1 or H.265 at 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube ingest bitrate recommendations, not guaranteed ISP upload-speed targets for every home network. YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

A speed-test peak does not prove that your connection can sustain a stream without interruption. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide suggests starting with a bitrate around 75% of total upload speed; treat this as troubleshooting guidance, not a platform standard or guarantee. If the connection is unstable, lower the bitrate and test again. A wired Ethernet connection is worth trying when Wi-Fi instability contributes to dropped frames. OBS dropped-frames and network troubleshooting.
What stream settings should you check?
For YouTube, the current guidance cited here supports RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, and recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection. Follow the current YouTube guidance for the codec and resolution you select; supported combinations and recommendations can change.

How to test your PC before upgrading
- Open OBS and run Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard. Use the wizard’s result as a starting configuration, not proof that every scene and game will work. OBS Auto-Configuration Wizard.
- Configure the intended YouTube stream settings. Set the target encoder, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval, and connect through YouTube’s encoder setup.
- Run a test stream with the real workload. Play the intended game or present the actual content; include movement, audio, overlays, and scene changes.
- Check the result before changing hardware. Determine whether the problem is rendering or encoding performance, or an unstable network connection. Lower game graphics settings or close other GPU-heavy tasks when the GPU is overloaded; lower bitrate or test wired networking when the connection is unstable.
- Change one relevant setting at a time and retest. This makes it easier to identify the bottleneck and avoid buying a component that does not address it.
Troubleshooting common streaming problems
| Symptom | Likely area to investigate | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames in OBS | Network instability or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. | Lower the bitrate, test the connection again, and try Ethernet if Wi-Fi is unstable. OBS suggests beginning around 75% of total upload speed as troubleshooting guidance. |
| OBS cannot render frames smoothly while a game runs | The game or other work is consuming too much GPU capacity. | Lower in-game graphics settings or close other GPU-heavy work, then retest with the stream running. |
| Stream stutters only at the higher frame rate | 60 fps can increase both workload and bitrate requirements compared with 30 fps. | Test 30 fps or reduce other demands; keep the setting that remains stable during the actual workload. |
| Stream quality is poor despite having a hardware encoder | Encoder generation, selected bitrate, resolution, or settings may be limiting quality. | Check the encoder guide and platform recommendations. Hardware-encoder availability alone does not establish equal quality across generations. |
Do you need a dedicated GPU, capture card, or Ethernet cable?
- Dedicated GPU: not a universal requirement established by the official sources cited here. A supported hardware encoder may reduce CPU load, but OBS’s rendering needs and the game’s GPU demand still matter.
- Capture card: only relevant when bringing an external video source into OBS; it is not a standard requirement for every PC stream. OBS capture card guide.
- Ethernet cable: a practical troubleshooting option when Wi-Fi instability is causing connection problems; it does not fix PC rendering or encoding limits.
