There is no reliable current comparison in the reviewed evidence showing which streaming app uses the least battery across laptops and tablets. Battery life while watching video depends on the device, display, software, video, settings, and network; results from local playback or an older browser test are not the same as a current streaming-app test.
The figures previously reported for five devices are iTechGuides’ own results and have not been independently verified. Treat them as a limited report, not a general device ranking or a prediction of your battery life.
How much battery does streaming video use?
There is no single dependable percentage for streaming app battery drain. A result applies only to the device and conditions tested. Microsoft warns that battery life varies significantly with settings, usage, and other factors. A fair test should identify the device and battery condition, operating system and app or browser version, video and playback settings, display brightness, network, power mode, background activity, duration, and measurement method.
Where possible, compare absolute energy or power as well as battery percentage, and repeat the test. A percentage drop on one device cannot be directly compared with the same drop on another device with a different battery capacity.

What the reported five-device test can—and cannot—show
The original article reports a two-hour live 1080p YouTube test on five devices. Its reported changes are below, expressed as percentage points. These are the article’s figures, not measurements reproduced or independently confirmed by the sources reviewed for this update. The available description does not establish repeat counts, battery health, exact brightness, network consistency, software versions, or raw logs.
| Device named in the report | Reported starting charge | Reported ending charge | Reported change over two hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| MacBook Air M1 | 100% | 68% | 32 percentage points |
| Dell XPS 13 Plus | 100% | 52% | 48 percentage points |
| iPad Air | 100% | 71% | 29 percentage points |
| Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE | 100% | 74% | 26 percentage points |
| ASUS VivoBook 15 | 100% | 48% | 52 percentage points |
These figures should not be used to rank the devices generally: the test conditions are not documented in enough detail to reproduce, and percentage points from batteries of different capacities do not represent comparable amounts of energy.

Streaming, local playback, and broadcasting are different workloads
A streaming-app test measures a different workload from playing a file stored on the device. For example, Microsoft’s Surface battery estimates for specified current models use preproduction devices playing a local 1080p/24 fps .mov file in Windows Media Player. Microsoft reports “up to 20 hours” for the Surface Laptop 13.8-inch and “up to 19 hours” for the 15-inch model under that method. These are local-video estimates, not streaming-app results.
Watching a stream is also different from broadcasting or encoding one. A live broadcast can involve capturing and encoding video and sending it upstream; the viewing-side battery observations above do not establish how long a laptop can broadcast. Do not use viewing tests to predict encoding runtime.

Why video playback uses power
Android Developers’ Media3 documentation says that “the display and decoding of the video stream account for most of the power consumed during playback.” Player implementation can matter too: Android’s documentation says TextureView can increase total playback power by as much as 30% on some devices compared with SurfaceView. This is conditional implementation guidance, not evidence that one streaming service uses 30% more battery than another.
App and browser results may differ. RTINGS cautions that its laptop battery test, which combines browsing with video, may not match playback in a particular app or on a particular site. A browsing test with embedded video should not be treated as a pure streaming-app comparison.

Older browser tests are not current rankings
Microsoft published a Netflix browser comparison in 2016 using four identical Surface Books, Windows 10 build 14393.105, and then-current browsers over Wi-Fi. It reported 312 minutes for Firefox 48, 364 for Chrome 53, 429 for Opera 39, and 527 for Microsoft Edge. Those results describe that historical setup; they do not establish which current browser or streaming app is most efficient today.

On supported Windows devices, Microsoft documents video playback settings that can change processing behavior or lower playback resolution for apps using the built-in Windows video platform. Its battery-saving guidance also describes choosing “Optimize for battery life” and enabling lower resolution during video playback on battery when those options are available. The options and their effects depend on the device and app; Microsoft does not promise a fixed runtime gain.

How to compare streaming battery use fairly
- Use the same device model and document battery condition, operating system, and app or browser version.
- Play the same video at the same resolution and frame rate.
- Keep brightness, refresh behavior, power mode, network type and signal, and background tasks consistent.
- Use the same playback duration and measurement method; repeat the test and record the conditions.
- Distinguish watching a stream from downloading and playing a local file or broadcasting and encoding video.
FAQ
Does streaming drain more battery than downloaded video?
The reviewed evidence does not establish a universal difference. Local playback and streaming are different test conditions, so a local-video battery estimate cannot answer how a streaming app will perform on your device.
How much battery does watching YouTube use?
There is no dependable single percentage for all devices. The five-device percentages reported above are iTechGuides’ unverified results under its described test, not independently confirmed estimates for other devices or viewing sessions.
Does lowering video resolution save battery?
Microsoft documents lower-resolution playback as an option on supported Windows devices, including for battery use. The sources reviewed do not establish a fixed battery-life improvement; the effect depends on the device and playback setup.
Are the five-device results a reliable ranking?
No. They have not been independently reproduced, and the available test description lacks details needed to reproduce the comparison. Percentage-point changes also do not directly compare energy use across batteries with different capacities.
Do these viewing results predict battery life while live-streaming?
No. Broadcasting and encoding are different workloads from watching a stream. The viewing test does not establish how long a device can broadcast on battery.
