To stream a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live event, play it through a software or hardware encoder that sends a continuous feed to YouTube. Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio, connect the encoder using YouTube’s stream URL and key, check the preview, and start the event in Live Control Room. Scheduling creates an upcoming event viewers can share and set reminders for; it is different from scheduling a regular video upload.

How Do I Stream a Prerecorded Video as Live on YouTube?

YouTube’s standard workflow uses an encoder: “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube,” according to YouTube Help. The encoder plays the file and sends its output as a live feed. YouTube Studio manages the event, while the encoder’s controls determine how you select, schedule, or loop media. Check the encoder’s current documentation rather than assuming every tool has the same controls.

  1. Confirm eligibility early. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-streaming activation may take up to 24 hours, so complete activation before the event day. (YouTube Help: “YouTube live streaming tips” and “Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.”)
  2. Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, choose the encoder workflow and configure the event title, privacy, and other details. Scheduling creates an upcoming event that you can share and viewers can set a reminder for. YouTube’s labels and controls may change.
  3. Prepare the playback source. Choose an encoder that can play the video file and send a continuous feed. Verify its file support, playback, scheduling, and looping behavior in its documentation, then test it.
  4. Connect the encoder. Copy YouTube’s stream URL and stream key into the encoder. Treat the key like a password; reset it in Live Control Room if it is exposed. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. (YouTube Help: “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions” and “Manage live stream settings.”)
  5. Test the feed. Use representative motion and audio, leave upload bandwidth headroom, check the preview and stream health, and confirm the event appears on the intended watch page. YouTube recommends setting up an encoder stream at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. (YouTube Help: “YouTube live streaming tips.”)
  6. Start and end the event deliberately. Once the encoder preview is available, click Go live in Live Control Room for the scheduled event. At the end, click End Stream and stop sending content from the encoder. Keep a local recording if the archive matters. (YouTube Help: “Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder” and “Archive live streams.”)

Choose a Playback Setup

The right setup depends on whether you can supervise a computer, need computer-free operation, or simply want to publish a video at a chosen time. The following comparison describes general tradeoffs; check the selected encoder’s documentation for its specific controls and media support.

Choice Best suited to Tradeoffs
Software encoder on a computer Creators who can keep a computer and playback application running Flexible and often economical, but playback, scheduling, updates, power, and network need monitoring.
Dedicated hardware encoder Computer-free or unattended operation, where the particular model supports it Check file formats, scheduling controls, storage, and current cost for the model; these vary.
Scheduled upload or Premiere A prerecorded video that does not need to be sent as an encoder-fed live event A simpler publishing path, but not the same workflow as streaming a feed to a live event.

YouTube lists the AJA HELO Plus as a hardware encoder option and says its optional PlayToStream functionality can schedule prerecorded media and stream it directly to YouTube Live without a computer. This is a specific supported option, not a requirement or a guarantee about other devices. YouTube’s listing does not establish current retail availability, price, or every supported media format. (YouTube Help: “Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.”)

Can I Schedule a Prerecorded Video as a YouTube Live Stream?

Yes. Schedule an encoder stream in YouTube Studio to create an upcoming live event. Share its event page and viewers can opt for a reminder. You must still configure an encoder to play the file and send its feed, then start the scheduled event in Live Control Room after checking the preview. This is not the same as scheduling a normal uploaded video to publish, and the encoder—not YouTube’s general setup instructions—determines how playback is scheduled or looped.

Encoder Settings and Upload Bandwidth

YouTube’s encoder guidance covers RTMP and RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 options, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube also provides resolution-dependent bitrate recommendations. Treat these as guidance: match the settings supported by your encoder, the target quality, and your available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encryption and 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. (YouTube Help: “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.”)

Test with representative audio and movement before broadcasting. Monitor stream health and audio/video during the event; a successful connection alone does not confirm that playback and sound are correct. YouTube does not prescribe one universal file-selection, looping, or scheduling interface, so follow the current instructions for your chosen encoder.

Live Event, Chat, and Content Rights

An encoder-fed event is a YouTube Live stream, but do not assume that every viewer interaction, visibility outcome, or monetization feature will be identical across channels or stream settings. Review the event’s settings and YouTube’s current guidance. Before broadcasting, make sure you have rights to the video and audio and comply with YouTube’s policies; prerecorded media does not bypass content-rights or community rules. (YouTube Help: “Manage live stream settings.”)

Archives and Reliability

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be archived automatically, but streams that exceed 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a local backup when you need a reliable recording. (YouTube Help: “Archive live streams.”)

A computer-based setup requires the computer, playback application, power, and network to remain available. A dedicated encoder may suit a computer-free workflow if its model supports the needed playback and scheduling features. Neither general encoder instructions nor the existence of a stream key guarantees that a stream will recover automatically if a connection fails; test the chosen setup and monitor it.

FAQ

Does YouTube accept a prerecorded file directly as a live stream?

The standard workflow is to play the file through a software or hardware encoder, which sends a live feed to YouTube. Some specific hardware, such as the AJA HELO Plus with optional PlayToStream functionality, supports scheduled prerecorded media without a computer.

Can I schedule a prerecorded YouTube Live event?

You can schedule an encoder event in YouTube Studio, creating an upcoming event page that can be shared and offer reminders. The encoder must still play the file and send the feed; its controls determine how you schedule playback.

Yes. YouTube describes the stream key as a credential the encoder uses to send a feed. Keep it private and reset it in Live Control Room if it is exposed.

Will YouTube archive a long stream?

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be archived automatically, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a local recording if you need to preserve the full event.
