Stream health is not one universal score: bitrate shows how much encoded data you send, frame rate shows how often frames are sent, and dropped frames can signal trouble delivering the stream to the platform. Uptime or duration describes activity according to a particular service’s measurement; it does not prove smooth playback or good image quality. To diagnose a problem, first identify where each number comes from and read the platform’s status messages.
What bitrate means when streaming
Bitrate is the amount of data sent to the streaming platform each second. A higher bitrate can improve picture quality up to a point, but it also uses more upload capacity. It is not a standalone quality grade: the encoder, network path, destination platform, and stream format all affect what the platform receives.
There is no single recommended bitrate that applies to every service and setup. Platform guidance can depend on the destination, ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, YouTube Help’s ingest table recommends 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p and 60 fps, and 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps. For AV1 or H.265 at those same formats, the listed recommendations are 12 Mbps and 10 Mbps respectively. These are YouTube ingest settings for specific combinations, not a viewer’s required download speed or recommendations for every platform.

These figures come from YouTube Help’s configuration-specific bitrate guidance, accessed on 2026-10-04. Match the recommendation to the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually use. Do not compare two bitrate settings without checking those details.

What frame rate means for a stream
Frame rate is the number of video frames sent each second, expressed in frames per second (fps). A higher frame rate can make motion look smoother, but it also requires more encoding power and can raise bitrate needs. Choose it based on the motion in your content, your encoder’s capacity, your connection, and the platform’s guidance.
Twitch Help’s Broadcasting Guidelines explains: “Streaming at a higher resolution like 1080p requires a higher bitrate, and a higher frame rate takes more encoding power.” A 60 fps setting does not guarantee that every frame will reach the platform if the encoder or network cannot keep up.

Why OBS reports dropped frames
When OBS’s dropped-frames counter increases, its connection to the destination platform’s ingest server may be unstable or unable to keep up with the configured bitrate. OBS drops frames to avoid buffering and keep the stream playing. The counter is a warning about delivery to ingest, not proof of exactly what every viewer sees.
Viewer buffering can happen even when the broadcaster’s encoder is not dropping frames. Viewers have different networks, locations, and devices, so encoder-side counters cannot guarantee a smooth experience for everyone.

What stream health and uptime mean
“Stream health” is not a standardized score shared across platforms. YouTube distinguishes stream status from health status: an active status means it is receiving stream data, while health details can identify recognized configuration or ingestion problems. Live Control Room also provides status messages and real-time analytics such as duration. After a broadcast, YouTube Studio and Analytics provide post-stream metrics, which may differ from Live Control Room reporting.
Uptime or duration should be understood according to the service, screen, and measurement window that produced the number. A stream can be active while a configuration issue exists, and a long session does not prove uninterrupted delivery, good picture quality, or smooth playback for viewers. The reviewed sources do not establish a universal uptime formula or a shared acceptable dropped-frame percentage.

How to diagnose stream problems
- Identify where the number comes from: OBS, YouTube Live Control Room or API, Twitch Inspector, or a viewer’s playback report.
- Read the exact platform warning or error text before changing settings.
- If OBS dropped frames are rising, check whether your bitrate exceeds stable upload capacity. Try lowering it or selecting another ingest server as controlled tests.
- Confirm that the bitrate guidance matches your destination, codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- If connection instability is suspected, test with Ethernet and check the route or ingest server. A wired connection is a diagnostic, not a fix for every ISP, routing, encoder, or platform problem.
- Change one thing at a time, then recheck encoder counters, platform status, and viewer playback.
OBS’s suggestion to start around 75% of total upload speed is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee. Available upload can fluctuate, and other network use competes for capacity. A speed-test peak alone does not establish that the route to the platform will remain stable.

What is a good bitrate for streaming?
It depends on the destination platform, codec, resolution, and frame rate. Use the matching platform guidance, then check whether your connection and encoder can sustain it. A higher number is not automatically better.

What does 60 fps mean for a stream?
It means the stream is configured to send 60 frames each second. That can make motion look smoother, but it requires more encoding power and can increase bitrate needs. It does not guarantee that every frame reaches the platform.
Why am I dropping frames on OBS?
OBS says an increasing dropped-frames counter can mean the connection to the destination ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with your set bitrate. Try another ingest server or lower the bitrate, then test again.
What does stream health mean?
It depends on the platform’s own health tool. Check its specific status and error messages: an active stream can still have a recognized configuration or ingestion issue.
Does uptime mean viewers had smooth playback?
No. Uptime or duration describes activity under the service’s definition and measurement window. It does not by itself establish uninterrupted delivery or what viewers experienced on their networks and devices.
