The latest update on Brandon Sanderson’s official film-and-TV page is dated July 28, 2026, but it is about the Mistborn screenplay—not the Stormlight Archive series. The latest sourced report specifically about Stormlight is from January 28, 2026: Apple TV had acquired rights, and a television adaptation was in early development with Blue Marble Pictures attached to produce. No release date or newer Stormlight production milestone is established by the cited sources.
What is the latest official update on the Stormlight Archive TV series?
There is no newer Stormlight Archive-specific milestone in the cited sources. Sanderson’s official Film and TV News page labels July 28, 2026 as its most recent update, but that announcement concerns the first draft of the Mistborn screenplay. Sanderson wrote: “After many months of work, I’m thrilled to announce the first draft of the Mistborn screenplay is DONE!” That is a Mistborn update, not news that the Stormlight series has a finished script or has moved into production.
The latest report in the cited sources about Stormlight itself is TheWrap’s January 28, 2026 account of Apple TV acquiring rights to Sanderson’s Cosmere and eyeing a television adaptation of the series. It described the project as in early development and named Blue Marble Pictures as attached to produce.
What stage is the adaptation in?
“Early development” is the stage reported on January 28, 2026; it should not be treated as confirmation of the project’s status today. The cited sources do not establish that filming has begun, or give an episode count, current showrunner, release date, or viewing availability. The TheWrap report described two different planned formats: a feature adaptation for Mistborn and a television series adaptation for The Stormlight Archive.

How does this differ from Sanderson’s earlier update?
In his 2025 State of the Sanderson, Sanderson said the Mistborn/Stormlight effort had held major pitch sessions and received offers, describing it as “(Very early) Step Four.” That was an earlier, pre-Apple-deal account. It is useful historical context, but it does not establish the present stage of the Apple TV project.
Which books would the series draw on?
TheWrap named five published Stormlight Archive novels, released between 2010 and 2024:
Rank #2
- The Way of Kings
- Words of Radiance
- Oathbringer
- Rhythm of War
- Wind and Truth
Readers starting the books can begin with The Way of Kings. TheWrap also reported that Sanderson’s books collectively had sold over 50 million copies; that figure refers to his books overall, not to Stormlight alone.
