If you need a replacement for Stoplight Studio’s desktop app, first note the distinction: the desktop version is discontinued, but Stoplight still documents a browser-based editor connected to Git repositories. As of October 4, 2026, the practical alternatives include SwaggerHub, two VS Code extensions, and Apicurio Registry’s Drafts feature. Which fits best depends on whether you want visual editing, a local IDE workflow, or team collaboration—not on a verified overall ranking.
What happened to Stoplight Studio?
OpenAPI.Tools describes Stoplight Studio’s desktop version as discontinued, while also listing a browser edition that connects to GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket. Stoplight’s own getting-started guide continues to show creating an API project in its editor with OpenAPI 3.1 YAML and Form, Code, and Preview views. In other words, “Studio is gone” is accurate for the desktop app, not for every Stoplight editing workflow. Check current access and plans before adopting the browser service; documented availability is not a guarantee of future product support.
The five options below are compared by documented capabilities, not by hands-on testing. Their current feature tiers and prices were not comprehensively verified, so this is a workflow guide rather than a best-to-worst ranking.
Five OpenAPI editing paths to consider
| Tool or path | Best fit | Documented capabilities | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stoplight browser editor | People who want to keep using Stoplight and can work in a browser with Git | Stoplight documents Form, Code, and Preview views and creating OpenAPI 3.1 YAML projects. OpenAPI.Tools describes GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket connections. | The desktop app is discontinued. Verify current browser access and plans directly. |
| SwaggerHub | Teams seeking a hosted design and documentation platform | OpenAPI.Tools describes collaboration, standardized workflows, and centralized API discovery and consumption. | The cited evidence does not establish detailed current feature tiers, pricing, or hands-on authoring experience. |
| Redocly OpenAPI for VS Code | Developers who want editing and validation inside VS Code | Validates definitions, supports multi-file documents and schema navigation, provides side-by-side documentation preview, and includes interactive forms. | The documented version supports OpenAPI 2.0 and 3.0, with basic 3.1 support. Live documentation preview requires an API key; interactive forms are limited to info, server, and externalDocs. |
| 42Crunch OpenAPI (Swagger) Editor for VS Code | Developers who want IDE editing, navigation, and preview, with an optional security workflow | Its documentation lists JSON/YAML editing, IntelliSense, linting, navigation, Swagger UI or ReDoc preview, Try It, multi-file $ref support, and quick fixes. |
The listing describes the editor as free without registration or usage limits. Separate generator, audit, and scan tools have trial or enterprise conditions; that does not mean all security tooling is unrestricted and free. |
| Apicurio Registry 3.1.0 Drafts | Teams already considering Apicurio Registry that want visual authoring integrated with registry lifecycle | In Registry 3.1.0, core Studio functionality is available as an opt-in feature. Drafts support iterative editing before an artifact leaves draft state. | This is a migration of functionality into Registry, not an unchanged standalone Studio. Apicurio Studio itself was fully deprecated on October 23, 2025. |
Stoplight: retain the visual-plus-code workflow
Stoplight is the closest documented fit here if you want to switch between structured Form editing and YAML rather than work exclusively in a code editor. Its getting-started guide shows the OpenAPI 3.1 example, while the directory describes the browser workflow’s Git connections. Stoplight’s pricing page lists integrations including GitHub, GitLab, Azure DevOps, and Bitbucket; confirm current availability and plan requirements there.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
SwaggerHub: prioritize a hosted team workflow
Among these five choices, SwaggerHub is the option described as a hosted platform centered on team collaboration, standardized processes, and shared API discovery. That positioning may suit an organization that wants design and documentation in a shared service rather than an individual local editor. The available evidence does not support a detailed comparison of its current plans, authoring interface, or pricing, so verify those specifics with SwaggerHub before making a procurement decision.
Redocly: edit and inspect definitions in VS Code
Redocly’s VS Code extension documents validation, multi-file definitions, schema navigation, and a side-by-side documentation preview. Its interactive forms are narrower than a full visual endpoint editor: the documented supported sections are info, server, and externalDocs. The documentation also says live documentation preview requires an API key, and describes OpenAPI 2.0 and 3.0 support with basic 3.1 support. Check the extension documentation against the exact specification features your definition uses.

42Crunch: use an IDE editor with linting and preview
The 42Crunch VS Code extension documents JSON and YAML authoring, IntelliSense, linting, navigation, preview in Swagger UI or ReDoc, a Try It function, multi-file $ref support, and quick fixes. Its cited documentation describes support for OpenAPI v2 and v3.0.x. The extension listing says the editor itself is free without registration or usage limits, but additional generator, audit, and scan capabilities have trial or enterprise terms. Review the VS Code Marketplace listing and distinguish the editor from the separately conditioned security tools.
Apicurio Registry Drafts: move visual editing into a registry
Apicurio Studio is not a continuing standalone alternative. In an announcement dated October 23, 2025, author Eric Wittmann wrote, “As of today, Apicurio Studio is fully deprecated.” The announcement says core editing functions are available within Apicurio Registry 3.1.0 as an opt-in feature, with Drafts for iterative edits before moving an artifact out of draft state. Consider this route if Registry already fits your artifact-management workflow, rather than assuming it is a drop-in desktop editor. See the Apicurio deprecation announcement.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
How to choose the right replacement
Start with the task you actually need the editor to perform. A request for a “visual editor where you can add endpoints response codes etc without having to write all the code” points toward form-based authoring; a team standardizing designs may care more about shared workflows, while an IDE user may value navigation, validation, and preview.
- Decide whether you need visual authoring or code-first editing. Stoplight documents Form and Code views. Redocly documents interactive forms, but only for
info, server, andexternalDocsin the cited documentation. The feature descriptions do not establish that either tool offers a complete no-code endpoint-building workflow. - Choose local IDE or hosted service. Redocly and 42Crunch are VS Code extensions. SwaggerHub is described as hosted and collaborative. Stoplight’s browser edition remains documented. Apicurio Drafts belongs inside Registry rather than in a standalone Studio application.
- Check your OpenAPI version before migrating. OpenAPI.Tools marks Swagger Editor as supporting 2.0, 3.0, and 3.1. Redocly documents 2.0 and 3.0 plus basic 3.1 support; 42Crunch’s cited editor documentation says v2 and v3.0.x. These statements are not interchangeable: test the features and syntax your files use, and confirm current compatibility in vendor documentation.
- Match preview, references, and validation to your workflow. Redocly documents validation, multi-file definitions, schema navigation, and documentation preview. 42Crunch documents linting, navigation, preview, Try It, and multi-file references. Check whether your own authentication setup, file format, and reference structure are supported.
- Consider how collaboration and lifecycle work. SwaggerHub is positioned around collaboration and standardization. Apicurio Drafts connect editing to Registry lifecycle management. Stoplight describes projects as representing Git repositories; its pricing page lists GitHub, GitLab, Azure DevOps, and Bitbucket integrations. Confirm that the integration and access level you need are available on current terms.
- Verify access and cost directly. The evidence does not establish a cost winner. Stoplight publishes a pricing page; 42Crunch distinguishes its editor from other tools with separate trial or enterprise conditions; Redocly requires an API key for live documentation preview. Check the current plan and access requirements for the specific features you intend to use.
What OpenAPI.Tools can—and cannot—tell you
OpenAPI.Tools is a useful discovery index: its text-editor listings include Swagger Editor, SwaggerHub, Redocly’s VS Code extension, and 42Crunch’s VS Code OpenAPI Editor, and it marks version support in the directory. Treat those entries as a shortlist, not the final compatibility authority. Version support and feature boundaries should be checked against the relevant product documentation, especially when migrating a working specification.
