To stop new files from steadily filling your Windows system drive, change the save destination for supported content types, then move large files already on that drive. In Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Where new content is saved. Windows 10 calls the option Change where new content is saved. This changes where supported new content goes; it does not relocate files you already have.

First find what is using space

Open File Explorer, select This PC, and check the available space on the system drive, usually C:. Then open Storage settings to see how Windows groups the drive’s usage. Windows’ storage overview and cleanup guidance are in Microsoft’s guide to freeing drive space and its overview of Storage settings.

Look for large personal files in Videos, Music, Pictures, and Downloads. In File Explorer, open a folder and sort by size to help locate large items. For each file, decide whether to delete it, move it to another internal drive, or move it to connected external storage. Microsoft identifies USB drives and SD cards as possible destinations; choose capacity and connector to suit your files and computer. If you delete files to free space, empty the Recycle Bin when you are sure you no longer need them.

Move existing files, then redirect new content

Changing Windows’ save destination does not sweep up files already on C:. Move those separately in File Explorer: select the files or folders, choose Cut, open the intended folder on the other drive, and choose Paste. For personal files that do not need to stay on the PC, an external drive can work, but it must be connected when you want to access files stored there.

Next, set destinations for supported types of new content. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Where new content is saved. In Windows 10, open Settings > System > Storage > Change where new content is saved. Choose the preferred connected drive for each listed content category, then apply the changes. Microsoft says saving new files to another drive helps prevent low-space problems from recurring on the original drive, reducing the need to move files repeatedly; see Free up drive space in Windows.

This setting covers supported new content, not every app, download, or existing folder. Check the destination choices available on your Windows version and choose a drive that will be present when the content is needed.

Use Storage Sense with its rules in mind

Storage Sense can clear temporary files and manage items in the Recycle Bin, but it works on the system drive. Its behavior depends on the cleanup rules you configure: Downloads and cloud content are not managed by default unless you change those settings. Review the selected options before relying on automatic cleanup. Microsoft explains the controls in Manage drive space with Storage Sense.

Cleanup recommendations may include removing a previous Windows installation. Do that only if you accept losing the ability to roll back to the earlier Windows version. Storage Sense is not a substitute for checking other drives; use Storage settings to review their space separately.

Choose between OneDrive files online-only and stored locally

OneDrive Files On-Demand lets a file appear in File Explorer without keeping its full contents on the PC. An online-only file needs an internet connection to download when you open it, so keep files available locally if you expect to work offline. Marking a file Always keep on this device keeps a local copy and exempts it from Storage Sense management. Microsoft describes these options in its Storage Sense guidance.

Microsoft’s Windows 11 version 22H2 guidance says OneDrive cloud files not opened for more than 30 days default to online-only. That detail is version-specific; check your current Windows and OneDrive settings rather than assuming the same default on every later build.

Changing Windows’ default save destination is separate from changing the OneDrive folder itself. If you need to relocate that folder, Microsoft’s documented procedure is to unlink OneDrive, move the folder, and relink the account; follow Change the location of your OneDrive folder. For the relationship between OneDrive and default save choices, see How to change the default save location in OneDrive for Windows.

Check the result and keep the destination practical

After moving files and changing save locations, return to This PC and Storage settings to review available space and category usage. The steps can reduce repeated accumulation on C:, but they do not guarantee that the system drive will never fill: apps and other content may still use it. Pick a destination based on how much space you need, whether it is internal or external, and whether files must be available without connecting another device or going online.
