Docker is not categorically unsuitable for production, and Kubernetes did not make Docker-built images obsolete. The real questions are whether your production setup relies on Docker Engine’s privileged daemon, whether your orchestrator supports the runtime you chose, and whether your team can operate that setup safely. In Kubernetes, the built-in dockershim was removed in v1.24; that changed how Kubernetes nodes connect to Docker Engine, not whether Docker can build images.

First, separate Docker Engine, image building, and the Kubernetes runtime

“Docker” can mean several related but distinct things: tools used to build container images, Docker Engine and its daemon on a host, or the container runtime used by a Kubernetes node. A decision about one does not automatically decide the others. A team can keep Docker-based image-building workflows while using a different runtime on Kubernetes nodes.

This distinction matters because the Kubernetes change often described as a Docker deprecation was specifically the removal of Kubernetes’ built-in dockershim in v1.24. The component had let kubelet interact with Docker Engine as though it were a runtime compatible with Kubernetes’ Container Runtime Interface (CRI). Kubernetes now expects a compatible runtime integration. It did not deprecate Docker images or prohibit Docker for non-Kubernetes production.

Kubernetes says that containers built with Docker can still run on other runtimes. Docker likewise says its Docker-built images comply with the Open Container Initiative (OCI) and are supported by containerd; treat that as Docker’s statement, and use the Kubernetes documentation for cluster-specific guidance. Why Docker Engine’s daemon deserves production scrutiny

Docker documents that its standard daemon requires root privileges unless rootless mode is enabled. Since controlling the daemon can grant powerful access to the host, access to a Docker socket or API is a consequential permission—not a routine convenience to grant to untrusted users, applications, or workloads. Docker also warns that features such as sharing host directories with containers can expose host filesystems.

This is a reason to review access and configuration, not proof that every Docker deployment is unsafe. Docker’s security guidance recommends limiting container capabilities to those actually needed and describes host security mechanisms such as AppArmor and SELinux as additional controls. Their effectiveness depends on configuration and the threat model; they do not make risk disappear. See Docker Engine security.

When rootless mode may help

Docker rootless mode runs the daemon and containers as a non-root user inside a user namespace. Docker presents it as a way to mitigate potential vulnerabilities in the daemon and runtime, not as a guarantee against all container or host risks. Its documented prerequisites include newuidmap and newgidmap, plus subordinate UID and GID ranges configured in /etc/subuid and /etc/subgid. Check workload and tooling compatibility before adopting it. Details: Docker Rootless mode.

What changed for Kubernetes—and what did not

  • Changed: Kubernetes removed its built-in dockershim in v1.24. Kubernetes nodes need a runtime integration compatible with the Container Runtime Interface.
  • Did not change: Docker-built images remain usable on compatible runtimes. Building with Docker is not the same as using Docker Engine as the Kubernetes node runtime.
  • Operational consequence: Kubernetes-managed workloads should be managed through the Kubernetes API. Commands such as docker ps and docker inspect do not become the management interface for workloads running under another runtime.
  • Possible bridge: The Kubernetes FAQ describes cri-dockerd, an external adapter for teams that still want Docker Engine as the runtime. Check support and maintenance guidance for the Kubernetes distribution you operate.

Kubernetes documents the removal and migration considerations in its Dockershim Removal FAQ and its dockershim impact checklist.

Decide based on the production model you actually run

For a Kubernetes cluster, compare the runtime options supported by your distribution and weigh these factors before changing nodes:

  • Privilege and access: Who can control the daemon or runtime endpoint, and what host access follows from that permission?
  • Compatibility: Is the runtime supported by your Kubernetes distribution and version?
  • Integrations: Do logging, metrics, security and telemetry agents, registry mirrors, private-registry credentials, GPU support, or other hardware integrations depend on Docker-specific behavior?
  • Workload fit: Do your workloads need a particular runtime feature, device integration, or operational workflow?
  • Team capacity: Can your team test, roll out, monitor, and maintain the change without disrupting workloads?

Docker has said that a lightweight runtime such as containerd can be reasonable for production Kubernetes environments that do not need Docker’s developer experience. That is Docker’s view, not a universal performance result or proof that every team should migrate.

For production hosts that do not run Kubernetes, assess Docker Engine separately. The cited documentation does not establish that Docker Engine is unsuitable for every such host. Minimize daemon access, apply least privilege, consider rootless mode where it meets requirements, and maintain appropriate host-level controls.

  1. Search scripts and services: Find calls to Docker commands, actions that restart Docker, and tools that query Docker directly. Identify whether each is operating Kubernetes workloads or separate host-level containers.
  2. Check privileged access and sockets: Review privileged pods, mounted Docker sockets, host scripts, and any workload that can reach the Docker control API.
  3. Review daemon configuration: Inspect references to /etc/docker/daemon.json and determine how each setting maps—or does not map—to the replacement runtime.
  4. Trace observability and security: Check logging, metrics, telemetry, security agents, and tools that inspect containers or depend on Docker-specific logs.
  5. Validate registries and workloads: Verify image mirrors, private-registry settings, resource limits, GPU or special-hardware integrations, and other runtime-sensitive behavior.
  6. Test and roll out cautiously: Exercise representative workloads and operational procedures in a test environment, then follow your distribution’s support guidance for production rollout.

Use this audit alongside Kubernetes’ checklist for dockershim removal impacts; a successful image pull alone does not establish that node agents, logging, hardware, and operational tooling will work.

When should you stop using Docker in production?

Stop—or change the specific part of the stack—when your supported platform requires a different Kubernetes runtime, your daemon-access model grants more host privilege than your organization accepts, or your security and operations requirements cannot be met with your current configuration. If only the Kubernetes node runtime is the issue, you may be able to keep Docker for building and local development while selecting a supported runtime for the cluster. If Docker Engine on a non-Kubernetes host meets your needs and its access and host controls are appropriate, the Kubernetes dockershim change alone is not a reason to replace it.
